Notes: Dynamical heterogeneity and the decoupling of diffusion and relaxation in a supercooled liquid is investigated via a time-dependent, four-point density correlation function. We show that the main contribution to the corresponding generalized susceptibility χ4(t) in a molecular dynamics simulation of a Lennard-Jones liquid arises from spatial correlations between temporarily localized ("caged") particles. By comparing χ4(t) with a generalized susceptibility χM(t) related to a correlation function for the squared particle displacements, we demonstrate a connection between dynamical heterogeneity and the decoupling of relaxation and diffusion. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: An equilibrated model glass-forming liquid is studied by mapping successive configurations produced by molecular dynamics simulation onto a time series of inherent structures (local minima in the potential energy). Using this "inherent dynamics" approach we find direct numerical evidence for the long held view that below a crossover temperature, Tx, the liquid's dynamics can be separated into (i) vibrations around inherent structures and (ii) transitions between inherent structures [M. Goldstein, J. Chem. Phys. 51, 3728 (1969)], i.e., the dynamics become "dominated" by the potential energy landscape. In agreement with previous proposals, we find that Tx is within the vicinity of the mode-coupling critical temperature Tc. We further find that near Tx, transitions between inherent structures occur via cooperative, stringlike rearrangements of groups of particles moving distances substantially smaller than the average interparticle distance. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We present a simple model of the signals transmitted by global positioning system (GPS) satellites and of the reception of these signals by a GPS receiver, neglecting atmospheric effects. The model idealizes the receiver and transmitter as electric dipole antennas. We derive the open-circuit voltage induced in the antenna of the receiver as a function of time, position, velocity, and orientation of the respective antenna. As an application of this model, we show that by using a single dipole antenna, a user of the GPS can compute his position, time, and two angles of attitude, by tracking the phases of the open-circuit antenna voltages for six GPS satellites.

Notes: Measurements of equation of state (EOS) points on the principal Hugoniots of Cu, Au, Pb and the plastics Parylene-C and brominated CH at multimegabar pressures have been made using the 1 TW HELEN laser at AWE. The aim was 1% accuracy in shock velocity measurement (3%–4% in pressure) in order to compare with data from gas-gun and nuclear underground test experiments and the theoretical EOS's based on, or supported by, these data. Experiments comprised a hohlraum heated by two 500 J, 0.53 μm wavelength, 1 ns Gaussian laser pulses generating an x-ray flux which drove a shock into a target consisting of a base, with steps of a known EOS material and of the material of unknown EOS. Shock breakout from base and steps was detected by monitoring light emission from the target with optical streak cameras and shock velocities were derived from the transit times across the known-height steps. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A model of carrier phase measurement (as carried out by a satellite navigation receiver) is formulated based on electromagnetic theory. The model shows that the phase of the open-circuit voltage induced in the receiver antenna with respect to a local oscillator (in the receiver) depends on the relative orientation of the receiving and transmitting antennas. The model shows that using a single receiving antenna, and making carrier phase measurements to seven satellites, the three-axis attitude of a user platform (in addition to its position and time) can be computed relative to an initial point. This measurement model can also be used to create high-fidelity satellite signal simulators that take into account the effect of platform rotation as well as translation. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: e transformation resulted in normal distributions for most soil properties and reduced variability two- to threefold. However, a few soil properties remained non-normally distributed. Soil pH may be monitored at the regional scale with a high degree of precision. Small changes in soil C content (3–8% of the regional mean) may be detected using loge transformed total organic C as the indicator. Sampling soil properties as part of the NRI should improve NRCS' ability to monitor soil condition on a regional scale.

Notes: Abstract. Newly-prosperous Ireland has a number of sites which the scientific traveller can visit. There are apparatus museums at Birr and Maynooth, and a collection of early apparatus at the physics department of the Irish National University in Galway. The main attraction at Birr is the Rosse Telescope, with its 6-ft diameter speculum, built in the 1840s, and recently refurbished. Travellers to Northern Ireland can see applied geology at the Giant's Causeway.

Notes: Abstract. We studied two species of Ceratogymna hornbills, the black-casqued hornbill, C. atrata, and the white-thighed hornbill, C. cylindricus, in the tropical forests of Cameroon, to understand their movement patterns and evaluate their effectiveness as seed dispersers. To estimate hornbill contribution to a particular tree species' seed shadow we combined data from movements, determined by radio-tracking, with data from seed passage trials. For 13 individuals tracked over 12 months, home range varied between 925 and 4,472 ha, a much larger area than reported for other African avian frugivores. Seed passage times ranged from 51 to 765 min, with C. atrata showing longer passage times than C. cylindricus, and larger seeds having longer gut retention times than smaller seeds. Combining these data, we estimated that seed shadows were extensive for the eight tree species examined, with approximately 80% of seeds moved more than 500 m from the parent plant. Maximum estimated dispersal distances for larger seeds were 6,919 and 3,558 m for C. atrata and C. cylindricus, respectively. The extent of hornbill seed shadows suggests that their influence in determining forest structure will likely increase as other larger mammalian dispersers are exterminated.

Notes: Abstract New methods of determining the structural groups —COOH and —CH2— have been developed. The investigation of carboxyl groups is possible both after derivatization with p-fluorophenacylbromide and by quantitative interpretation of the Fourier transform infrared (FT IR) spectra. There exists a linear relationship between the results of these two methods that is generally valid for the analysis of all brown coal components. The maximum extinction coefficient of the symmetric stretching vibration band of the CH2 groups has been determined using model substances. This allows quantification of this structural group directly from the FT IR spectrum. The results agree with the contents of methylene groups as determined by 13C-cross polarization–magic angle spinning–nuclear magnetic resonance (13C CPMAS NMR) spectroscopy. Using these methods, the COOH and CH2 groups contained in brown coals of the North Rhine region and in their bioconversion products have been quantified.
