Notes: Summary We have developed a novel and reproducible method for determining the plasma protein binding of the two ibuprofen enantiomers in the presence of each other. The method involves the use of radiolabelled racemic ibuprofen, equilibrium dialysis, derivatization of the enantiomers to diastereomeric amides, high-performance liquid chromatography, and radiochemical analysis. We have determined the plasma protein binding of R(−)- and S(+)-ibuprofen in 6 healthy male volunteers after the oral administration of 800 mg racemic ibuprofen. The mean time-averaged percentage unbound of the R(−)-enantiomer, 0.419 was significantly less than that of the S(+)-enantiomer, 0.643, consistent with stereoselective plasma protein binding. The percentage unbound of each ibuprofen enantiomer was concentration-dependent over the therapeutic concentration range and was influenced by the presence of its optical antipode.

Notes: [Auszug] At Bardon Hill the palygorskite is found as compact, fibrous masses filling the centre of a joint, the walls of which are lined with coarse calcite crystals. At Cliffe Hill and in a deeply penetrating joint at Enderby, the mineral forms fine specimens of mountain leather and in both cases is ...

Notes: Measurements of equation of state (EOS) points on the principal Hugoniots of Cu, Au, Pb and the plastics Parylene-C and brominated CH at multimegabar pressures have been made using the 1 TW HELEN laser at AWE. The aim was 1% accuracy in shock velocity measurement (3%–4% in pressure) in order to compare with data from gas-gun and nuclear underground test experiments and the theoretical EOS's based on, or supported by, these data. Experiments comprised a hohlraum heated by two 500 J, 0.53 μm wavelength, 1 ns Gaussian laser pulses generating an x-ray flux which drove a shock into a target consisting of a base, with steps of a known EOS material and of the material of unknown EOS. Shock breakout from base and steps was detected by monitoring light emission from the target with optical streak cameras and shock velocities were derived from the transit times across the known-height steps. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We report results from two separate experiments fielded on the AWE Helen laser facility both diagnosed by interferometry. In the first experiment, measurements were made on preheat in flat targets indirectly driven by 1.8 and 2.2 mm (length and diameter) hohlraums heated by two 0.53 μm, 3 ns duration shaped laser pulses, each of 400 J. The rear surface of the target acts as one mirror of a Michelson interferometer, and the fringe pattern produced is temporally resolved using an optical streak camera. Motion of the fringes prior to the arrival of the shock at the rear surface enables expansion due to preheating to be measured. In the second experiment spallation measurements were made on pure Al. Cylindrical targets (800 μm diameter×500 μm long) were directly driven with one beam of 0.53 μm. 200 ps duration laser pulses of 3–15 J. A time resolved Michelson interferometer recorded the motion of the free surface. Pull back, elastic precursor, and spallation signatures were observed and strain rates of 3×106 s−1 and spall strengths of 33 kbar were measured. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract The effects of two phases of deformation in Cretaceous rocks of the Alpine Orogenic Zone of south-eastern Turkey are described. These can be correlated with the late Cretaceous and Tertiary phases of deformation already known from the zone of foreland folding to the south. Some details of the stratigraphical succession are given and a previously unrecorded development of Oligocene rocks is described. The upper Cretaceous sediments are dominantly marine carbonates but include a red bed formation. Basic volcanics are intercalated with the lower carbonate beds. A profound unconformity separates the Eocene from the Upper Cretaceous. This unconformity results from uplift consequent upon the first phase of deformation which produced north-westward plunging folds and related thrusts. Some of these north-westerly folds have been considerably modified by the superposition of younger east-north-easterly trending Alpine folds and thrusts.
