    Description: A theory of freezing of a dense hard sphere gas is presented. Starting from a revised Enskog theory, hydrodynamic equations that account for non-local variations in the density but local variations in the flow field are derived using a modified Chapman Enskog procedure. These hydrodynamic equations, which retain structural correlations, are shown to be effectively a time dependent density functional theory. The ability of this theory to capture the solid liquid phase transition is established through analysis and numerical simulations.

    Notes: Abstract The objective of the present work was to examine the effects of phosphate fertilizers on the microbial activity of pasture soils. Various microbial characteristics were measured using soils from an existing long-term phosphate fertilizer field trial and a short-term incubation experiment. The measurements included basal respiration, substrate induced respiration, inhibition of substrate-induced respiration by streptomycin sulphate (fungal activity) and actidione (bacterial activity) and microbial biomass C. The long-term field trials was initiated during 1985 to examine the effectiveness of different sources of phosphate fertilizers (single superphosphate, North Carolina phosphate rock, partially acidulated North Carolina phosphate rock, and diammonium phosphate) on pasture yield. The incubation experiment was conducted for 8 weeks using the same soil and the sources of phosphate fertilizers used in the field trial. In the incubation experiment the fertilizer addition caused an initial decrease in basal and substrate-induced respiration but had no effect on total microbial biomass. The initial decline in basal and substrate-induced respiration with the fertilizer addition was restored within 8 weeks after incubation. In the field experiment the fertilizer addtion had no significant effect on basal respiration but increased substrate-induced respiration and microbial biomass C. The short-term and the long-term effects of phosphate fertilizer addition on the microbial characteristies of the soils are discussed in relation to its effects on pH, salt concentration, and the nutrient status of the soils.

    Notes: Abstract Various physical and chemical characteristics of earthworm casts collected from a laboratory incubation and a field experiment were examined in relation to their effect on the sorption and the movement of three 14C-labelled ionic herbicides: atrazine, 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, and metsulforon methyl. The earthworm casts contained higher levels of fine fractions and total and soluble C. This is attributed to the grinding action of the earthworm gut and selective feeding on zones with higher organic matter and fine size fractions. The earthworm casts had a higher pH than the source soil, resulting in a higher number of surface negative charges. The earthworm casts sorbed higher amounts of herbicides than the source soil, mainly due to the increases in the amount of organic C and fine size fractions. The incrased sorption of herbicides by the casts resulted in decreased leaching.

    Notes: A compact electron cyclotron resonance plasma x-ray source, which has a potential use for medical imaging is presented in this article. In this article, the experimental system and the characterization studies on plasma and x ray are presented. Using a Langmuir probe, the plasma parameters are measured for different magnetic field profiles and gas pressures. The x-ray spectrum is obtained for various gas pressures and magnetic field profiles. In the x-ray spectrum, the Bremstrahlung radiation, peaking at 20–60 keV is observed and the final energy of the x ray is extended up to ∼200 keV. Thermo luminescence dosimeter (CaSO4 sample) is used for estimating the dose at the port and these results are presented for typical x-ray spectra. Using a teletector, the dose at the port for various coil current is measured and these are compared with the estimated dose obtained from the x-ray spectrum. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) plasma x-ray source has a potential application for medical imaging. The plasma and x-ray characterization studies on the ECR x-ray source based on cylindrical cavity operated in TE111 mode were reported earlier by us. In order to enhance the x-ray flux and the effective energy of the x-ray spectrum, the use of rectangular cavity in ECR x-ray source is studied. In this article, the theoretical analysis of electron acceleration in TE101 rectangular cavity used as a cyclotron resonance accelerator is presented. The electron orbital values of rectangular cavity are compared with that of cylindrical cavity (TE111 mode). It is found that there is an increase in final energy of electron (170 keV), reduction in electron transit time, and increase in distance between the successive orbits in the rectangular cavity than the cylindrical cavity. An ECR x-ray source based on rectangular cavity has been designed and constructed and the experimental system is described. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The details of a high power microwave transmission line developed for plasma applications are presented. The line operates at 2.45 GHz and can handle about (approximately-less-than)1 kW of cw microwave power with about 15%–20% insertion loss. A special feature of the line is its wide range impedance matching capability for operating under different load conditions. A coaxial triple stub tuner capable of handling high power cw microwaves was especially developed for this purpose. Detailed design considerations for the tuner and other critical components like the high power vacuum seal are presented.

    Notes: The slow wave radiation fields of a slotted line antenna are calculated inside the antenna region. For this, a realistic magnetic current distribution, which takes into account the wave-slowing action of the antenna has been chosen. It is shown that the assumed distribution becomes accurate when the number of slots is large. The numerical results show that the radial component of the electric field is the dominant component, while the on-axis value of the axial component of the magnetic field decreases with increasing antenna radius. Relevance of the results to high density plasma production using such structures is pointed out.
