Notes: Abstract We have determined the MLT distribution and KpKP dependence of the ion upflow and downflow of the thermal bulk oxygen ion population based on a data analysis using the EISCAT VHF radar CP-7 data obtained at Tromsø during the period between 1990 and 1996: (1) both ion upflow and downflow events can be observed at any local time (MLT), irrespective of dayside and nightside, and under any magnetic disturbance level, irrespective of quiet and disturbed levels; (2) these upflow and downflow events are more frequently observed in the nightside than in the dayside; (3) the upflow events are more frequently observed than the downflow events at any local time except midnight and at any KP level and the difference of the occurrence frequencies between the upflow and downflow events is smaller around midnight; and (4) the occurrence frequencies of both the ion upflow and downflow events appear to increase with increasing KP level, while the occurrence frequency of the downflow appears to stop increasing at some KP level

Notes: Summary Rabbit anti-rat plasma fibronectin (pFN) causes histamine release from rat mast cells in the presence of complement. Fibronectin (FN) on rat mast cells, as shown by immuno-electron microscopy, is principally localized on cell folds, so they may play a role of attachment in the matrix of connective tissue.

Notes: Abstract  The effect of root exudates from onions differing in P status on spore germination and hyphal growth of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi was investigated. Onion (Allium cepa) was grown in solution culture at different phosphorus concentrations (0, 0.1, 1.0, 8.0 and 24.0 mg P l–1) and root exudates were collected. When spores of the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus, Gigaspora margarita were incubated with these root exudates, spore germination was only slightly affected but hyphal growth was greatly affected, particularly with exudates from P-deficient plants. This suggests that the P nutrition of host plants influences the composition of root exudates and thereby the hyphal growth of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi.

Notes: Abstract A single picosecond ultraviolet pulse has been generated based on mode-locking of a dye laser pumped by a long pulse XeCl laser to serve as the input source for a high-power ps KrF laser system. A short-pulse uv dye laser (BBQ) pumped by an additional XeCl laser was used to selectively amplify a single pulse from a mode-locked pulse train with the pulse separation of 3.2 ns. The amplified single pulse was frequency-doubled to 248 nm with the pulse duration of 20 ps.

Notes: Abstract Electron temperature observed by the Hinotori satellite with the low inclination at the height of \sim600 km was studied in terms of local time, season, latitude, magnetic declination and solar flux intensity during a 16-month period from 1981 to 1982. The electron temperatures show steep rise in the early morning (well known as morning overshoot), decrease after that and again increase at \sim18 hours (hereafter named as evening overshoot). Generally the morning overshoot becomes more enhanced in the winter hemisphere and for higher solar fluxes. The evening overshoot becomes more pronounced in the mid-latitude in all seasons and more enhanced in the winter hemisphere in the same way as the morning overshoot. A difference is seen between 210°-285° and 285°-360° longitudes where magnetic declination is different. The longitudinal dependence of electron temperature indicates that the neutral wind also contributes to the thermal structure in the low latitude ionosphere.

Notes: The structure of polycrystalline Si (poly-Si) films, prepared by annealing amorphous Si (a-Si) films deposited using Si2H6, has been investigated by x-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman scattering, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and electron spin resonance, as functions of deposition conditions, such as deposition temperature Td (450–580 °C) of the a-Si and annealing time under a fixed temperature of 600 °C. A dominant texture of the poly-Si films changed from a 〈100〉 texture for Td below 530 °C to a 〈111〉 for Td above 530 °C, independent of the deposition rate of the a-Si films and of the film thickness. Although the XRD grain size was independent of Td, the TEM grain size increased from 1.0 to 2.5 μm with decreasing Td. It is suggested that the increase in this TEM size is caused by enhanced lateral growth of 〈100〉 grains due to the presence of strain. The spin density Ns and the factor g were found to first increase with the annealing time, and rapidly decreased after the films were crystallized. It is also found that the value of g for the poly-Si films decreased from 2.0051 to 2.0048 with decreasing Td. Furthermore, effects of post-hydrogenation on the poly-Si films with different textures were investigated, and a structural change of the boundary regions in the poly-Si films is discussed in connection with a change in the dominant texture, through the corresponding change in g. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A peak power of 1 TW has been obtained in XeCl with a pulse width of 310 fs and the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) less than 3% in energy. The property of ASE was analyzed for different gains. Based on this analysis, the ASE coupling between stages was suppressed by using an appropriate spatial filter along with operating at a low-gain level. The saturation characteristics of UV dyes were investigated and analyzed for subpicosecond pulses. BBQ [4,4'''di(2-butyl-octoxy-1)-p-quarter-phenyl)] in cyclohexane showed the satisfactory performance for a saturable absorber in contrast and transmission.

Notes: Boron nitride films prepared by reactive ion plating from a boron evaporation source were characterized structurally using three independent electron optical techniques: energy filtered electron diffraction with radial distribution function analysis; electron energy-loss spectroscopy of the near-edge structure of the boron K edge; and spectroscopy of the plasmon region of the energy-loss spectrum. Both specimens had a graded BNx layer between the BN layer and the silicon substrate and in addition one specimen had a titanium bonding layer underneath the BNx layer. The presence of c-BN in both specimens was confirmed by all techniques. The specimen with the titanium bonding layer was examined in cross section and showed essentially pure c-BN on the surface. A model for the formation of c-BN assisted by the compressive stress generated during deposition is proposed.

Notes: The long-time behavior of charged particles in plasma turbulence with uniform broad wave spectrum is studied numerically. The diffusivity of the particle velocity distribution is characterized by the quasilinear nature for extended time, while a transient diffusion precedes with the enhanced nonquasilinear diffusion rate when resonance overlapping is relatively weak. The observed long-time quasilinear diffusion coefficient eventually decreases due to the finiteness of the resonance region. The transient-type diffusion is revealed only by the higher-order numerical calculation.
