    Notizen: The superconducting super collider rf-driven volume ion source routinely provided 35 kV, (approximately-greater-than)30 mA H− beams with normalized rms emittances (cursive-epsilonn-rms) 〈0.1 π mm mrad. The source was typically operated with a 100 μs beam pulse width at a 10 Hz repetition rate. To enhance H− output, the ion source was modified to accommodate a set of cesium dispensers so that a trace amount of cesium could be introduced into the plasma grid collar. A plasma grid heater element controls the temperature of the cesiated surfaces and the rate of cesium dispensation. Beam currents in excess of 100 mA and electron to H− current ratios close to one have been observed. Emittance measurements at 70 mA suggest a 20% increase over uncesiated emittance values. Improvements in the beam emittance are fully expected when the extraction optics are optimized. This enhanced, very reliable source is a strong candidate for high current H− accelerators. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: The Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) ion source is required to provide a 30 mA H− beam at 35 keV with a normalized rms emittance (εn-rms) of less than 0.18 π mm mrad. An rf-driven volume source was chosen for the commissioning of the SSC linear accelerator (Linac). The divergent ion source output beam is matched into the radio frequency quadrupole accelerator (RFQ) by an electrostatic low-energy beam transport (LEBT). The SSC Linac injector (consisting of ion source, LEBT, and RFQ) is required to provide 25 mA of H− beam (pulse width of 9.6–35 μs at 10 Hz repetition rate) at 2.5 MeV with transverse normalized rms emittance (εt-n-rms) of less than 0.2 π mm mrad and longitudinal normalized rms emittance (εl) of less than 0.82×10−6 eV s. The performance of our rf volume source and initial experimental results from the SSC injector are discussed.

    Beschreibung: Non-axisymmetric free-boundary equilibrium reconstructions of stellarator plasmas are performed for discharges in which the magnetic configuration is strongly modified by ohmically driven plasma current. These studies were performed on the compact toroidal hybrid device using the V3FIT reconstruction code with a set of 50 magnetic diagnostics external to the plasma. With the assumption of closed magnetic flux surfaces, the reconstructions using external magnetic measurements allow accurate estimates of the net toroidal flux within the last closed flux surface, the edge safety factor, and the plasma shape of these highly non-axisymmetric plasmas. The inversion radius of standard sawteeth is used to infer the current profile near the magnetic axis; with external magnetic diagnostics alone, the current density profile is imprecisely reconstructed.

    Beschreibung: We present a detailed magnetic and magnetotransport investigation of spinel zinc ferrite Zn x Fe 3−x O 4−y (0.1 ≤ x ≤ 0.6) thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition on various substrates. The films are ranging from polycrystalline to (001)- or (111)-oriented. It is shown associating magnetic and resistivity measurements to x-ray and ion beam scattering analyses that the magnetic and electrical properties are tightly linked to the chemical composition and crystallinity/microstructure of the films, as they result from the choice of substrate and growth conditions. The use of oxidizing conditions (O 2 pressure ≈ 10 −4 –10 −2 mbar) is highly detrimental to the crystalline quality and thus to the ferromagnetism. On the contrary, a partial O 2 pressure of 3 × 10 −7 mbar combined to a growth temperature of 500 °C allows obtaining Zn x Fe 3−x O 4−y films displaying very good ferromagnetic features. The SiO 2 /Si substrates, promoting (111) growth without interfacial effects, lead to better film properties than Al 2 O 3 (0001), MgO(001), or SrTiO 3 (001) substrates: higher Curie temperatures and higher magnetization values (≈490 kAm −1 ) at room temperature. Above a Verwey-type critical temperature, a thermally activated spin polarized charge transport is observed, while in the low temperature range, the resistivity is well described by the variable range hopping model. However, the negative magnetoresistance response at low field remains modest and a monotonous decrease with increasing magnetic field is observed. We show that a steeper low field magnetoresistance decrease may be obtained in polycrystalline stoichiometric layers formed by a specific two-step growth process, which significantly reduces the density of grain/antiphase boundaries.

    Beschreibung: The measured Total Hydrocarbon Content (THC) levels in liquid oxygen (LOX) systems at Stennis Space Center (SSC) have shown wide variations. Examples of these variations include the following: 1) differences between vendor-supplied THC values and those obtained using standard SSC analysis procedures; and 2) increasing THC values over time at an active SSC test stand in both storage and run vessels. A detailed analysis of LOX sampling techniques, analytical instrumentation, and sampling procedures will be presented. Additional data obtained on LOX system operations and LOX delivery trailer THC values during the past 12-24 months will also be discussed. Field test results showing THC levels and the distribution of the THC's in the test stand run tank, modified for THC analysis via dip tubes, will be presented.

    Beschreibung: Low edge safety factor operation at a value less than two ( q ( a ) = 1 / ι ̷ tot ( a ) 〈 2 ) is routine on the Compact Toroidal Hybrid device with the addition of sufficient external rotational transform. Presently, the operational space of this current carrying stellarator extends down to q ( a ) = 1.2 without significant n  = 1 kink mode activity after the initial plasma current rise phase of the discharge. The disruption dynamics of these low edge safety factor plasmas depend upon the fraction of helical field rotational transform from external stellarator coils to that generated by the plasma current. We observe that with approximately 10% of the total rotational transform supplied by the stellarator coils, low edge q disruptions are passively suppressed and avoided even though q ( a )

    Beschreibung: A round robin test aiming at measuring the high-temperature thermoelectric properties was carried out by a group of European (mainly French) laboratories (labs). Polycrystalline skutterudite Co 0.97 Ni 0.03 Sb 3 was characterized by Seebeck coefficient (8 labs), electrical resistivity (9 labs), thermal diffusivity (6 labs), mass volume density (6 labs), and specific heat (6 labs) measurements. These data were statistically processed to determine the uncertainty on all these measured quantities as a function of temperature and combined to obtain an overall uncertainty on the thermal conductivity (product of thermal diffusivity by density and by specific heat) and on the thermoelectric figure of merit ZT . An increase with temperature of all these uncertainties is observed, in agreement with growing difficulties to measure these quantities when temperature increases. The uncertainties on the electrical resistivity and thermal diffusivity are most likely dominated by the uncertainty on the sample dimensions. The temperature-averaged (300–700 K) relative standard uncertainties at the confidence level of 68% amount to 6%, 8%, 11%, and 19% for the Seebeck coefficient, electrical resistivity, thermal conductivity, and figure of merit ZT , respectively. Thermal conductivity measurements appear as the least accurate. The moderate value of the temperature-averaged relative expanded (confidence level of 95%) uncertainty of 17% on the mean of ZT is essential in establishing Co 0.97 Ni 0.03 Sb 3 as a high temperature standard n-type thermoelectric material.
