Notes: Ferroelectric polymorph of lead metaniobate (PbNb2O6) exhibits an orthorhombic structure, which is metastable at room temperature and can only be obtainable by quenching from high temperatures (∼1200 °C). In this letter, we report a ferroelectric PbNb2O6 thin film doped with SrTiO3 (Pb0.95Sr0.05(Nb2)0.98Ti0.05O6) with orthorhombic structure on Pt/Ti/Si substrate, which was prepared via a sol-gel route. The orthorhombic structure was developed at 900 °C at a normal heating rate of 5 °C/min and cooling rate of 10 °C/min. The PbNb2O6 film exhibited a remanent polarization (Pr) of 12.3 μC/cm2 and a coercive field (Ec) of 39 kV/cm, respectively, when measured at an applied field of 143 kV/cm. The leakage current density was 1.02×10−5 A/cm2 at 100 kV/cm. The room-temperature dielectric constant and dissipation factor was stable (∼325 and ∼1.5%, respectively) over a frequency range of 1 kHz to 1 MHz. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A multichannel far-infrared (FIR) hydrogen cyanide (HCN) laser interferometer was developed to measure plasma electron density profile on the HT-6M tokamak. The structure of the seven-channel FIR laser interferometer is described. The laser source used in the interferometer was a continuous-wave glow discharge HCN laser with a cavity length of 3.4 m and power output of about 100 mW at 337 μm. The detection sensitivity was 1/15 fringe with a temporal resolution of 0.1 ms. Experimental results were measured by the seven-channel FIR HCN laser interferometer with edge Ohmic heating, a pumping limiter, and ion cyclotron resonant heating on the HT-6M tokamak are reported. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A Monte Carlo algorithm based on the hybrid Ising-DIFFOUR model is proposed to investigate the phase transition in ferroelectromagnetic lattice in which the ferroelectric order and antiferromagnetic order coexist below a certain temperature. The Ising spin moment and ferroelectric displacement and their susceptibilities as well, as a function of temperature for systems of different magnetoelectric couplings, are simulated and compared with the mean-field approach. The typical antiferromagnetic transition at Néel point and the ferroelectric transition at Curie point are observed at zero coupling. It is demonstrated that a weak ferromagnetic order can be activated by introducing the magnetoelectric coupling or applying external magnetic field, while the external electric field has little effect on the ferromagnetic ordering behavior. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Deep level transient spectroscopy and double correlation technique were used to examine the annealing and profiles of interstitial iron in boron-doped silicon at a temperature range from 50 to 400 °C. The results show that iron-boron pairs begin to break-up at a temperature as low as 50 °C. After a short time annealing (5 min) at a temperature up to 400 °C, most of the iron from the breaking is converted into interstitial iron. We also find that the distribution of interstitial iron under the silicon surface is not uniform, and it depends on the annealing time and temperature. The interstitial iron near the silicon surface decreases with the increase of the annealing time.

Notes: We describe efficient electroluminescence from a terbium complex, tris-(1-phenyl-3-methyl-4isobutyryl-5-pyrozolone)-bis(triphenyl phosphine oxide) terbium (PTT). The green-emitting material possesses much higher photoluminescence efficiency compared to the commonly used green light emitter, 8-hydroxyquinoline aluminum (ALQ). The rarely observed emission from the hole transport layer, N, N′-bis (3-methylphenyl)- N, N′-diphenyl-benzidine (TPD) of the device ITO/TPD/PTT/Al proves that PTT also is a good electron transporting material. The ITO/TPD/PTT/ALQ/Al device shows luminance up to 920 cd/m2 at a drive voltage of 18 V and a luminous efficiency of 0.51 lm/W at a current density of 0.70 mA/cm2, which are up to now the highest among devices using rare-earth complex materials as emitters. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Jasmonic acid (JA) is known to be involved in the response of plants to environmental stresses such as drought, and betaine (glycinebetaine) is an osmopretectant accumulated in plants under environmental stresses including drought. However, it remains currently unclear whether JA is involved in the water-stress-induced betaine accumulation in plant leaves. The present experiment, performed with the whole pear plant (Pyrus bretschneideri Redh. cv. Suli), revealed that the exogenously applied JA induced a significant increase of the betaine level in the pear leaves when the plants were not yet stressed by drought, and when the plants were subjected to water stress, the ‘JA plus drought’ treatment induced a significant higher betaine level than did the drought treatment alone. Meanwhile, the ‘JA plus drought’ treatment induced higher levels of betaine aldehyde dehydrogenase (BADH, E C 1.2.1.8) and activities in the leaves than did the drought treatment alone. These results obtained in the whole plant experiments were supported by the results of detached leaf experiments. In detached leaves JA induced significant increases in betaine levels, BADH activities and BADH protein amounts in a time- and concentration-dependent manner. These data demonstrate that JA is involved in the drought-induced betaine accumulation in pear leaves.

Notes: This paper examines the effects of loading rate on the Weibull stress model for prediction of cleavage fracture in a low-strength, A515-70 pressure vessel steel. Interest focuses on low-to-moderate loading rates (K˙I 〈 2500 MPa √m s−1 ). Shallow cracked SE(B) specimens were tested at four different loading rates for comparison with previous quasi-static tests on shallow notch SE(B)s and standard C(T)s. To utilize these dynamic experimental data, we assume that the Weibull modulus (m) previously calibrated using quasi-static data remains invariant over the loading rates of interest. The effects of dynamic loading on the Weibull stress model enter through the rate-sensitive material flow properties, the scale parameter (σu ) and the threshold Weibull stress (σw-min ). Rate-sensitive flow properties are modelled using a viscoplastic constitutive model with uniaxial, tension stress–plastic strain curves specified at varying plastic strain rates. The analyses examine dependencies of σw-min and σu on K˙I . Present results indicate that σw-min and σu are weak functions of loading rate K˙I for this pressure vessel steel. However, the predicted cumulative probability for cleavage exhibits a strong sensitivity to σu and, consequently, the dependency of σu on K˙I is sufficient to preclude use of the static σu value for high loading rates.

Description: A high-speed tangentially viewing vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) telescope system, using an inverse Schwarzschild-type optic system was developed to study fluctuations in the Large Helical Device (LHD). However, for the original system, the sampling rate was restricted to below 2000 Hz due to the low signal to noise (S/N) ratio in the experiment. In order to improve the S/N ratio, upgrade of the system was made. With this upgraded optical system, the maximum framing rate is improved to 6000 fps with a similar spatial resolution. Rotation of the m = 2 structure caused by the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) instability is measured by the upgraded system. The spatial structure of the image is consistent with the synthetic image assuming the interchange mode type displacement of the flux surfaces.

Description: A new multi-channel poloidal correlation reflectometry is developed at Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak. Eight dielectric resonator oscillators with frequencies of 12.5 GHz, 13.5 GHz, 14.5 GHz, 15 GHz, 15.5 GHz, 16 GHz, 17 GHz, and 18 GHz are used as sources. Signals from the sources are up-converted to V band using active quadruplers and then coupled together. The output waves are launched by one single antenna after passing through a 20 dB directional coupler which can provide the reference signal. Two poloidally separated antennae are installed to receive the reflected waves from plasma. The reference and reflected signals are down-converted by mixing with a quadrupled signal from a phase-locked source with a frequency of 14.2 GHz and the IF signals pass through the filter bank. The resulting signals from the mixers are detected by I/Q demodulators. The setup enables the measurement of density fluctuation at 8 (radial) × 2 (poloidal) spatial points. A coherent mode with an increasing velocity from 50 kHz to 100 kHz is observed by using the system. The mode is located in the steep gradient region of the pedestal.
