Notizen: Auger electron spectroscopy has been employed to investigate the effectiveness of thin films of TiN as barriers to carbon diffusion during chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of diamond onto Fe substrates. Auger depth profiling was used to monitor the C concentration in the TiN layer, through the interface and into the substrate both before and after CVD diamond deposition. The results show that a layer of TiN only 250 A(ring) thick is sufficient to inhibit soot formation on the Fe surface and C diffusion into the Fe bulk.

Notizen: The transport of runaway electrons in a hot plasma can be comparatively easily measured by perturbation experiments. The runaway electron diffusion coefficient is determined by intrinsic magnetic fluctuations rather than electrostatic fluctuations because of the high energies involved. The results presented here demonstrate the efficacy of using runaway transport techniques for determining intrinsic magnetic fluctuations. This work was supported in part by U. S. Department of Energy under grant DE-FG05-88ER-53267 and the Texas Advanced Research Program.

Notizen: A synchronous detector electronics package with self-contained oscillator is described. It uses only three integrated circuits, all of which contain operational amplifiers. The performance of the detector was evaluated with a capacitance sensor. Linearity and stability were found to compare favorably with general purpose commercial systems costing hundreds to thousands of dollars. Although the noise performance was less impressive, the dynamic range was still in excess of 90 db, permitting better than 100 μrad resolution over a range of nearly 3 rad. As presently configured, the detector is compatible only with high impedance sensors such as the capacitance type; however, coupling the oscillator output through a power amplifier would permit its use with LVDTs.

Notizen: The results of an earlier study [Schnitker, Rossky, and Kenney-Wallace, J. Chem. Phys. 85, 2986 (1986)] in which likely sites for electron localization in pure liquid water were identified and characterized via a physically motivated purely classical analysis are statistically compared to a corresponding fully quantum mechanical treatment of the excess electronic ground state. It is shown that the most energetically favorable localization sites identified by the classical treatment correspond reasonably to the quantum mechanical result both energetically and spatially. It is found that the existence and location of a physically localized ground state can be determined from the classical results if both the minimum of the estimated absolute total electronic energy and the difference between this minimum and the alternative local minima identified within a solvent configuration are considered. Further, the results confirm that the concentration of such effective sites is relatively high in the liquid (∼0.01 M). Hence, the classical approach has merit as a qualitative tool for the analysis of the electronic states supported by the preexisting configurational order in a liquid.

Notizen: The consequences of the subtle balance of intermolecular forces for like charge interionic correlations in solution are considered. The potential of mean force (PMF) for Cl−–Cl− and Na+–Na+ ion pairs using simple point charge (SPC and SPC/E) water models are examined in detail, and it is demonstrated that the results depend qualitatively on the details of the model. Features in the ion–ion cavity potential are shown to be responsible for much of the observed sensitivity with respect to parameters.

Notizen: We use nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the rheology of branched and linear alkanes in the dense fluid state. A simplified model alkane [J.-P. Ryckaert, G. Ciccotti, and H. J. C. Berendsen, J. Comput. Phys. 23, 327 (1977); J.-P. Ryckaert and A. Bellemans, Discuss. Faraday Soc. 66, 95 (1978); G. Ciccotti and J.-P. Ryckaert, Comp. Phys. Rep. 4, 345 (1986); R. Edberg, D. J. Evans, and G. P. Morriss, J. Chem. Phys. 84, 6933 (1986)] composed of sites representing CH2 and CH3 groups with fixed bond lengths and bond angles between sites is used. The model also includes dihedral potential interactions between sites separated by three carbon bonds, and truncated and shifted Lennard-Jones potential interactions between sites on different molecules as well as those separated by more than three bonds on the same molecule. The Edberg–Evans–Morriss nonequilibrium molecular dynamics algorithm [R. Edberg, D. J. Evans, and G. P. Morriss, J. Chem. Phys. 84, 6933 (1986); R. Edberg, G. P. Morriss, and D. J. Evans, J. Chem. Phys. 86, 4555 (1987)] with periodic boundary conditions was used to simulate a system of 108 13-carbon n-alkane (tridecane) molecules and the corresponding 3-armed star branched alkane (5-butyl nonane). Equilibrium and steady state Couette flow simulations were performed. Properties calculated included the viscosity, normal stress differences, radius of gyration, alignment angles, shear induced order, angular velocity and a variety of other properties related to the conformation and dynamics of the molecules. The general features of the results were in agreement with recent simulations of n-decane and n-eicosane [G. P. Morriss, P. J. Daivis, and D. J. Evans, J. Chem. Phys. 94, 7420 (1991)], but the details of the results differed for branched and linear molecules. For example, the general trend of decreasing viscosity at low shear rates followed by an increase in the viscosity at higher strain rates was once again observed, but the viscosity for the linear alkane was always less than that of the branched alkane.

Notizen: By keeping only the essential physical effects the simplest as possible, experimentally relevant quasilinear description of fast-wave minority heating in a tokamak is derived in a tractable form suitable for convenient numerical implementation. The resulting quasilinear operator retains all trapped and passing particle effects and permits the minority heating resonance line to be offset from the magnetic axis. Rather than averaging the infinite, homogeneous quasilinear operator, the derivation is carried out in tokamak geometry to properly treat the merging of distinct rf–particle interaction regions. Merging occurs when the banana tips of trapped particles are in the vicinity of the minority resonance or, for both trapped and passing particles, when the minority resonance is tangent or nearly tangent to a flux surface. A phenomenological model of the influence of collisions on merging is also presented.

Notizen: The quasilinear diffusion of runaway electrons in tokamak stochastic magnetic fields is examined. Previous models are generalized with respect to the spatial location and coherency of the perturbing magnetic fields, treatment of the radial as well as poloidal drift motion of the electrons, and the role of sidebands that arise from the beating of the electron drift motion with the applied perturbing fields. It is found that drift effects act to reduce the level of quasilinear diffusion by an amount that depends on the poloidal distribution of the magnetic turbulence. The results are employed to estimate the internal magnetic fluctuation levels at the edge during recent experiments on the TEXT tokamak [Phys. Fluids B 3, 2038 (1991)], where the drift modification effects are shown to be small. It is inferred that intrinsic magnetic turbulence controls runaway diffusion, but not the thermal diffusivity of the background electrons.

Notizen: Recent experimental and theoretical results are combined to explore the energy dependence of runaway and suprathermal electron diffusion. It is shown that a quasilinear theory containing both magnetic and electrostatic E×B-driven radial transport is consistent with the available experimental data, and supports the notion that magnetic turbulence dominates runaway diffusion but electrostatic turbulence dominates thermal diffusion in the edge plasma of the Texas Experimental Tokamak (TEXT) [Nucl. Technol./Fusion 1, 479 (1981)]. These observations further expand the possibilities for employing runaway or suprathermal electrons as a diagnostic of the underlying transport mechanisms in a tokamak plasma.

Notizen: This work presents a systematic study of the substrate temperature dependence for the formation of the photoluminescent W center during high energy self-ion irradiation of silicon. All previous studies of this center were for postirradiation annealing, and we show that the formation is well described by a thermally activated process involving both the release of point defects from secondary defect complexes and the rate-limited activation of the center itself. We deduce an activation energy of Ea∼0.85 eV for the growth of the W center, and discuss the relationship of this type of experiment to conventional annealing studies.
