Description: The ejection of material from Mars is thought to be caused by large impacts that would heat much of the ejecta to high temperatures. Images of the magnetic field of martian meteorite ALH84001 reveal a spatially heterogeneous pattern of magnetization associated with fractures and rock fragments. Heating the meteorite to 40 degrees C reduces the intensity of some magnetic features, indicating that the interior of the rock has not been above this temperature since before its ejection from the surface of Mars. Because this temperature cannot sterilize most bacteria or eukarya, these data support the hypothesis that meteorites could transfer life between planets in the solar system.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Weiss, B P -- Kirschvink, J L -- Baudenbacher, F J -- Vali, H -- Peters, N T -- Macdonald, F A -- Wikswo, J P -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2000 Oct 27;290(5492):791-5.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Division of Geological and Planetary Sciences, 170-25, California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, CA 91125, USA. bweiss@gps.caltech.edu〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11052940" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Stem cells are viewed from the perspectives of their function, evolution, development, and cause. Counterintuitively, most stem cells may arise late in development, to act principally in tissue renewal, thus ensuring an organism's long-term survival. Surprisingly, recent reports suggest that tissue-specific adult stem cells have the potential to contribute to replenishment of multiple adult tissues.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉van der Kooy, D -- Weiss, S -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2000 Feb 25;287(5457):1439-41.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology, University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine, Toronto, Ontario, M5S 1A8 Canada. derek.van.der.kooy@utoronto.ca〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10688784" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: We tracked over time the conductance switching of single and bundled phenylene ethynylene oligomers isolated in matrices of alkanethiolate monolayers. The persistence times for isolated and bundled molecules in either the ON or OFF switch state range from seconds to tens of hours. When the surrounding matrix is well ordered, the rate at which the inserted molecules switch is low. Conversely, when the surrounding matrix is poorly ordered, the inserted molecules switch more often. We conclude that the switching is a result of conformational changes in the molecules or bundles, rather than electrostatic effects of charge transfer.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Donhauser, Z J -- Mantooth, B A -- Kelly, K F -- Bumm, L A -- Monnell, J D -- Stapleton, J J -- Price Jr, D W -- Rawlett, A M -- Allara, D L -- Tour, J M -- Weiss, P S -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2001 Jun 22;292(5525):2303-7.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Department of Chemistry, The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA 16802-6300, USA.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11423655" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉
