    Description: Wind-tunnel tests on a 1/5-scale model of the Ryan XF2R airplane were conducted to determine the aerodynamic characteristics of the air intake for the front power plant, a General Electric TG-100 gas turbine, and to determine the stability and control characteristics of the airplane. The results indicated low-dynamic-pressure recover3- for the air intake to the TG-100 gas turbine ~rith the standard propeller in operation. Propeller cuffs were designed and tested for the purpose of imp~oving the dynamic-pressure recovery. Data obtained with the cuffs installed and the gap between the spinner an& the cuff sealed indicated a substantial gain in dynamic pressure recovery over that obtained with the standard propeller and with the cuffed propeller unsealed. Stability and control tests were conducted with the sealed cuffs installed on the propeller. The data from these tests indicated the following unsatisfactory characteristics for the airplane: 1. Marginal static longitudinal stability. 2. Inadequate directional stability and control. 3. Rudder-pedal-force reversal in the climb condition. 4. Negative dihedral effect in the power-on approach and wave-off conditions.

    Description: The motion of different bodies imersed in liquid or gaseous media is accompanied by characteristic sound which is excited by the formation of unstable surfaces of separation behind the body, usually disintegrating into a system of discrete vortices(such as the Karman vortex street due to the flow about an infintely long rod, etc.).In the noise from fans,pumps,and similar machtnery, vortexnQif3eI?Yequently predominates. The purpose of this work is to elucidate certain questions of the dependence ofthis sound upon the aerodynamic parameters and the tip speed of the rotating rods,or blades. Although scme material is given below,insufficientto calculate the first rough approximation to the solution of this question,such as the mechanics of vortex formation,never the less certain conclusions maybe found of practical application for the reduction of noise from rotating blades.

    Description: In part I of the paper the theory of flame propagation is developed along the lines followed by Frank-Kamenetsky and one of the writers. The development of chain processes in flames is considered. A basis is given for the application of the method of stationary concentrations to reactions in flames; reactions with branching chains are analyzed. The case of a diffusion coefficient different from the coefficient of temperature conductivity is considered.

    Description: In a previous paper, results are presented of accurate investigations of the processes of titanium carbonization and the succeeding titanium carbide decarbonization as related to the phenomenon of the graphitization of soot by heating at a constant temperature in atmospheres of pure hydrogen and carbon monoxide. These tests showed that the processes of titanium carbonization-decarbonization in an atmosphere of pure gases without nitrogen proceed in the same direction as the analogous processes under the conditions of the production furnace. In this case, however, the presence of admixtures of nitrogen changes the quantitative results of the decarbonization process. Thermodynamic computations confirming the results of previous tests conducted at atmospheric pressure and additional tests of titanium carbonization at lowered pressures are presented herein.

    Description: By the method of images the horizontal steady motion of a wing at small heights above the ground was investigated in the wind tunnel, A rectangular wing with Clark Y-H profile was tested with and without flaps. The distance from the trailing edge of the wing to the ground was varied within the limits 0.75 less than or = s/c less than or = 0.25. Measurements were made of the lift, the drag, the pitching moment, and the pressure distribution at one section. For a wing without flaps and one with flaps a considereble decrease in the lift force and a,drop in the drag was obtained at angles of attack below stalling. The flow separation near the ground occurs at smaller angles of attack than is the case for a great height above the ground. At horizontal steady flight for practical values of the height above the ground the maximum lift coefficient for the wing without flaps changes little, but markedly decreases for the wing with flaps. Analysis of these phenomena involves the investigation of the pressure distribution. The pressure distribution curves showed that the changes occurring near the ground are not equivalent to a change in the angle of attack. At the lower surface of the section a very strong increase in the pressures is observed. The pressure changes on the upper surface at angles of attack below stalling are insignificant and lead mainly to an increase in the unfavorable pressure gradient, resulting in the earlier occurrence of separation. For a wing with flaps at large angles of attack for distances from the trailing edge of the flap to the ground less than 0.5 chord, the flow between the wing end the ground is retarded so greatly that the pressure coefficient at the lower surface of the section is very near its limiting value (P = 1), and any further possibility of increase in the pressure is very small. In the application an approximate computation procedure is given of the change of certain aerodynamic characteristics for horizontal steady flight near the ground.
