Notizen: Conclusions 1. In cyclic annealing with austempering at 100–400°C (212–750°F) and subsequent heating to 650°C (1200°F), retained austenite of high stability is preserved. 2. The amount and the stability of the retained austenite depends on the composition of the steel, and on the cyclic annealing conditions — the temperatures of austenitizing and undercooling. 3. As the austenitizing and undercooling temperatures increase, the amount of retained austenite increases. 4. Increase of the time of holding at 650°C from one to five hours does little to promote the decomposition of the retained austenite. 5. A repeat tempering at 650°C after cyclic annealing brings about almost complete decomposition of the retained austenite even in a steel of high alloy content, and high austenitizing and undercooling temperatures. 6. The best cyclic annealing conditions with utilization of the forging heat of steels studied consist in rapid cooling to 100–250°C, a short holding at these temperatures followed by a double heating at 650°C, also for short times. To improve mechanical properties, it is also advisable, after the first undercooling, to reheat the steel 20–30°C (36–54°F) above Ac3 and then to cycle anneal it with double heating to 650°C.

Notizen: Summary Proteins extracted by Weber's solution from the smooth muscle of the uterus do not possess the ability to interact with myosin preparations with the formation of actomyosin. This makes highly improbable the assumption of Snellman and Tenow on the presence of any appreciable amounts of free actin in 0.5 M KCL extracts of myometrium. Investigations conducted by the method of paper electrophoresis demonstrate the presence of 3 fractions in the myometrium extracts with high ionic potential, viz., myoalbumin, heterogeneous myogen and actomyosin. The latter consists of a small quantity of actomyosin (undoubtedly bound with nucleoproteins) and water-soluble myofibrillar proteins (mainly tropomyosin and possibly Δ-protein). Likewise these investigations give no grounds for associating the peculiarity of the myometrial proteins with the high concentration of the “easily extractable” actin in the muscles of the uterus.

Notizen: Summary Experiments showed that there are no significant changes of the motor function in the seminal cells after x-ray irradiation of frogs (20, 000 r). This shows that disturbance of oxidative phosphorylation under the action of radiation is not a general biological regularity. The effect of ionizing radiation on the resynthesis of highenergy (ATP) differs in the cells of radiosensitive and radioresistant tissues; evidently it is primarily determined by the different localization of the corresponding enzyme systems therein. There are no visible disturbances in the ability of “glycerol models” of myofibrils, the cilia of the ciliated epithelium and spermatozoa (obtained from the tissues of irradiated animals), to interact with ATP. This points to a rather low radiosensitivity of the contractile cellular proteins and explains the high radioresistance in some phases of cell division connected with the separation of the chromosomes and equatorial division of the cytoplasm.

Notizen: Abstract Results are given in this paper of the laboratory investigation of the characteristics of the experimental reactor VVR-S undertaken with the aim of studying the neutron and physical parameters which are the most important for putting the reactor into operation and for its exploitation. As the result of the experimental work carried out, the critical mass and the maximum and operating fuel charges were found, the compensating capacity of the control and emergency rods was determined, the influence of the various factors (variation in the temperature of the water in the active zone, variations in the properties of the reflector, etc.) on the reactivity was studied, the distributions of neutron density with height and along the radius of the active zone were measured, and the operating time of the control rods was obtained.

Notizen: Abstract Preparations of the intermetallic compounds UAl2, UAl3 and UAl4 were obtained by high-temperature interdiffusion of aluminum and dispersed uranium, prepared by decomposing its hydride then grinding the product and heating the powder obtained. Debye x-radiographic investigation showed that the preparations obtained consisted of one phase and the parameters of their structures were close to those published earlier. The amount of hydrogen evolved during separate solution of the preparations and the starting components in a specially selected solvent (mixture of HCl, H3PO4, Na2SiF6, H2PtCl5 and CuSO4· 5H2O) Indicated that the preparations had the compositions; UAl1.997, UAl2.994 and UAl3.997. The differences in the heats of solution of these preparations and appropriate mixtures of their components gave die heats of formation (−ΔH°293)UAl2, UAl3 and UAl4, which were 22.3±2.4, 25.2±2.2 and 31.2±3.1 kcal/mole, respectively.

Notizen: Abstract The properties and fundamental methods of preparing metallic beryllium are discussed on the basis of results obtained by Soviet authors. Comparison is made between thermal reduction of beryllium fluoride by magnesium, electrolytic extraction, and purification of beryllium by distillation in vacuum. Preparation of beryllium articles by different methods of powder metallurgy, melting in vacuum induction furnaces with centrifugal casting, extrusion of beryllium articles and the structure and properties of compact beryllium are discussed. It is found that the maximum tensile strength of pure beryllium samples extruded from a metal hot-pressed in vacuum is about 20 kg/mm2 at 425
