Notes: Summary The polymorphism of PGM1 has been investigated in a series of 366 families from Southwestern Germany with 676 children. The segregation of the children's phenotypes is in agreement with the formal genetic model.

Notes: Summary β-nitropropionic acid (BNP) was converted to nitrate in media inoculated with A. flavus spores or with replacement cultures of mycelium pregrown in glucose-peptone medium. Conversion by replacement cultures was rapid: 8–30% in 2 days; influenced by pH: most rapid at pH 3.5; and extensive: as much as 80% BNP nitrogen appeared as nitrate after 14 days. Nitrite was detectable in BNP replacement cultures at low levels or not at all, and nitrate was formed in BNP replacement media with or without glucose. Nitrite was not oxidized in growing cultures inoculated with spores, but replacement cultures oxidized over 50% of added nitrite to nitrate in 8 days. No nitrite or nitrate appeared in replacement systems with pyruvic oxime, oxalacetic acid oxime, acetoxime, ketoglutaric acid oxime, or hydroxylamine. Of the three non-nitrifying mutants of A. flavus obtained, all formed nitrate from BNP in replacement but only one oxidized nitrite to nitrate. No accumulation of free or bound hydroxylamine or of nitrite could be detected in the mutants. BNP was detected by qualitative test in cultures of the wild type but not the mutants. Evidence indicates that the pathway in A. flavus is BNP→NO3 - rather than BNP→NO2 -→NO3 -.

Notes: [Auszug] The extracts produced in this way were examined serologically by the latex test, using several specific anti-E. coli sera. The extracts proved to be group-specific, that is, they only gave reactions with the E. coli antisera which contained antibodies against enteropathogenic E. coli type 0.111. ...

Notes: [Auszug] We studied the release of cellular enzymes in isolated perfused rat liver. By isolating the organ we were able to avoid the influence of extrahepatic factors and the superposition of enzyme patterns from various tissues. The rat livers were perfused by the method of Miller1 as modified by ...

Notes: [Auszug] Fig. 1 is a sketch of the system of measurement, essentially the same as that used by Borisov and Zadumin1. Thin sintered alumina substrates (98 per cent A12O3) approximately 04 mm in thickness were used as the inert reference material and similar plates were prepared from the clay slips. The dried ...

Notes: Abstract Developmental changes in the isoenzyme patterns of LDH and PGM during early embryogenesis (until hatching) in two trout species (Salmo trutta and Salmo irideus) as well as in their reciprocal interspecific hybrids are reported, completing a previous study which had commenced from hatching onward (Hitzeroth et al., 1968). Isoenzymes of both systems occur in unfertilized eggs and in embryos from fertilization onward. Until about the “Augenpunkt” stage, the isoenzyme patterns remain unchanged and are identical to the patterns of unfertilized eggs; the reciprocal hybrids correspond to the respective maternal species. Additional isoenzymes appearing for the first time at about the “Augenpunkt” stage in the interspecific hybrids show the same electrophoretic mobility as those in the animals of the respective maternal species at this developmental stage. It is discussed whether the appearance of additional isoenzymes characterizes the activation of maternally derived alleles of the embryonic genome, or whether maternally derived cytoplasmic factors are responsible for the occurrence of these additional bands.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary A new method for the determination of metallic iron in the presence of its oxides is proposed. It is based on selective oxidation of metallic iron to FeII by lead chloride. In comparison with known methods this procedure offers the advantage of being simple and rapid. FeIII formed during the separation of FeII solution from unattacked iron oxides is easy to reduce because lead chloride does not interfere. The method can be recommended for the determination of metallic iron in “sponge iron” in an industrial laboratory.
