Notes: Summary Normal and propylthiouracil (PTU) treated Xenopus laevis tadpoles were fixed during all stages of metamorphosis and sagittal sections were stained with aldehyde fuchsin (AF) or pseudoisocyanine (PIC). Whereas AF positive neurosecretory material could only be demonstrated in the preoptic nucleus from late prometamorphosis, increasing amounts of PIC positive material were found in cells of the dorsal part of the preoptic region from early premetamorphosis. The development of these cells correlated with that of the thyrotropic cells and the thyroids. Likewise, signs of hyperactivity in thyroids and thyrotropic cells of PTU treated larvae were accompanied by a depletion of the dorsal PIC positive cells. In the ventral preoptic region PIC positive cells developed from late prometamorphosis in control larvae, but failed to do so in PTU treated animals. It is argued that the differentiation of the PIC positive cells is largely dependent on thyroid hormones; that the dorsal PIC positive cells may produce a thyrotropin releasing factor; and that the function of these dorsal cells is inhibited by thyroid hormones.

Description / Table of Contents: UCl4 reacts with liquid or gaseous NH3 under atmospheric pressure to form ammoniates, which after removal of excess ammonia at room temperature contain 7.3-7.5 moles of NH3 per mole of UCl4. Reaction of liquid NH3 under pressure at room temperature yields ammoniates with 9-10 moles of NH3. Also, a slight ammonolysis in liquid ammonia occurs. Isothermal decomposition of the ammoniates in a stream of nitrogen at 45°C leads to UCl4 · 4 NH3, which at higher temperatures decomposes into UCl4 · 1 NH3 (stable up to about 3007deg;C).The reaction of the higher ammoniates with gaseous carbon dioxide shows that coordinatively bound NH3 can be distinguished from “structural ammonia”.Above 350°C in a stream of ammonia, UCl4 and its ammoniates undergo ammonolyses, forming amorphous uranium(IV) amidochloride, UNH2Cl3. This compound is then reduced to UCl3, which undergoes further ammonolysis via amorphous amidochlorides (UNH2CI2 U(NH2)2Cl) and crystalline uranium imidechloride U(NH)Cl to pure higher uranium nitride, UNx (x ≤ 1.75) (at 800°C).

Description / Table of Contents: Uranium imidechloride, U(NH)Cl, obtained by high-temperature ammonolysis of UCl4 and UCl3 crystallizes with the PbFCl layer structure (space group D4h7-P4/nmm) with two molecules in the tetragonal unit cell; lattice constants, parameters and nearest distances see „Inhaltsübersicht“. The much smaller effective radius of the NH2- ions in U(NH)Cl in comparison with the radius in other salt=like imides suggests that the NH2- groups in U(NH)Cl are restricted from free rotation by hydrogen bond formation.

Description / Table of Contents: UCl3 reacts with NH3 (l. or g.) under atmospheric pressure to form ammoniates, which after the removal of excess ammonia at room temperature contain 6.8-6.9 moles of NH3. Reaction of liquid NH3 under pressure at room temperature yields ammoniates with 7.0-7.4 moles of NH3. Also, a slight ammonolysis in liquid ammonia occurs. Isothermal decomposition of the ammoniates in a stream of nitrogen at 45°C leads to UCl3 · 3 NH3, which at higher temperatures decomposes into UCl3 · NH3 (stable up to about 300°C). X-Ray investigations and the reaction with gaseous carbon dioxide show that in the case of the higher ammoniates of UCl3 co-ordinatively bound NH3 can be distinguished from „structural ammonia“. Above 350°C in a stream of ammonia, UCl3 and its ammoniates undergo ammonolysis, forming amorphous amidochlorides (UNH2Cl2, U(NH2)2Cl), crystalline uranium imidechloride U(NH)Cl and at 800°C a pure higher uranium nitride, UNx (x ≈ 1.75).
