    Notes: Global warming might change the hydrology of upland blanket peats in Britain. We have therefore studied in laboratory experiments the impact of drought on peat from the North Pennines of the UK. Runoff was dominated by surface and near-surface flow; flow decreased rapidly with depth and differed from one type of cover to another. Infiltration depended on the intensity of rain, and runoff responded rapidly to rain, with around 50% of rainwater emerging as overland flow. Drought changed the structure of the peat and the subsequent behaviour of the peat in response to rain. Surface runoff was reduced, infiltration increased and flow increased within the deeper peat layers. Old and new water produced from the peat during simulated storms was identified by bromide tracing; the amount of old mobile water flushed out of the top few centimetres was small and there was less from deeper peat layers. No significant difference in the old and new water mixing processes could be identified between the control plots and the drought treatment plots. Lissamine staining showed preferential bypass flow through macropores in the peat, though only in the top 5 cm. Following drought, however, macroporosity increased within the upper peat layers, and preferential flow extended deeper than in controls. Peat structure recovered somewhat after drought, but the effects of the drought were long-lasting. If these effects extend to the field during drier summers then we can expect changes to the hydrology and associated chemistry of blanket peat catchments in the British uplands.

    Notes: Abstract In order to assess the genome homologies of a number of diploid and tetraploid species of Avena, two meiotic characters — mean chiasmata per cell and frequency of types of pairing configurations — have been studied in the species and in a number of diploid, triploid and tetraploid hybrids. The results indicate extensive structural differentiation of the genome of A. longiglumis from that which is common to the other diploids A. strigosa, A. brevis, A. hirtula, A. glabrata and A. wiestii. Structural differentiation is found also between the genomes of the three tetraploids A. vaviloviana, A. abyssinica and A. barbata. Chromosome pairing in triploid hybrids indicates the similarity of the genome in the A. strigosa group to one of those in the tetraploids and a partial but significant affinity with the other. These data, though derived from a very limited range of genotypes, lead to the conclusions that (a) structural differentiation of chromosomes may be common in the genus and important in its evolution, and (b) that current ideas on evolution of the polyploid species through simple allopolyploidy are unlikely to be true. The polyploids probably have a more complex origin in which autopolyploids or near autopolyploids and structural change of chromosomes have played a part.

    Notes: Abstract A description is provided of the karyotype of Avena sativa cultivar Condor. From estimates of mean arm ratios and mean relative lengths, 11 of the 21 chromosomes have been identified. Certain differences are apparent between the Condor karyotype and that previously published for A. sativa cultivar Markton (Rajhathy, 1963). The significance of these differences is discussed in relation to the concept of a standard karyotype for the species. It is proposed that a new system of numbering the chromosomes be adopted in order to simplify identification

    Notes: Abstract Detailed measurements of profiles of mean and turbulent variablesthrough the nocturnal stable boundary layer over a valley arepresented. Two nights of data are analysed in detail, one with only aweakly stable boundary layer and one with a strongly stable boundarylayer. The weakly stratified night shows high levels of turbulence inwhich the flow remains attached to the valley and the boundary layeracts as a single coherent layer. On the strongly stratified night, twoflow regimes are identified: attached flow, as on the weaklystratified night, and decoupled flow in which the air in the valleybecomes so dynamically stable that there is no turbulent interactionwith the mean flow aloft. Because the valley is sloping, the decoupledlower stagnant air then forms a drainage current. We find that theFroude number evaluated at the hill height, FH = U(H)/N(H) H,diagnoses the flow regime: when FH = 2, the flow remainsattached and when FH ≲ 2 the flow in the valley becomesdecoupled from the flow aloft. The dynamics of the flow regimes areshown to be understandable in terms of the gradient Richardson number,which indicates the turbulent mixing. We show that the gradientRichardson number is a key parameter in diagnosing each flow regime.

    Notes: Summary In this paper we consider plane deformations of an incompressible elastic material and we show that by a suitable choice of strain energy function we can find the class of deformations with constant local rotation angle. Although the form for the strain energy function is chosen in the first place for mathematical convenience it does correspond to physically reasonable behaviour and such a theory may be regarded as a first order theory. The class of solutions obtained are expressed in a parametric form involving an arbitrary function, simple choices of which correspond to the well known exact solutions of finite elasticity.
