The iodine catalyzed sublimation of red phosphorusWhen red phosphorus, sealed under vacuum in an ampoule, is brought into a temperature gradient (e. g. 400 → 350°C) no sublimation occurs, in spite of the P4 equilibrium pressure of 0.4 atm at 400°C. The reaction Pred ⇆ P4,g is hindered in both directions. On repeating the same experiment with addition of iodine, fast sublimation of Pred is observed.Thermodynamic calculations show that no chemical transport via P2I4 and PI3, existing in high concentrations in the gas phase, is responsible for the mobility of Pred. Decisive is the catalytic action of iodine in respect to the equilibration between Pred and P4,g.Addition of Cl2 or Br2 instead of I2 has no comparable catalytic effect.

Wird roter Phosphor unter Vakuum in eine Ampulle eingeschmolzen, die danach in ein Temperaturgefälle (z.B. 400 → 350°C) gebracht wird, so findet keine Sublimation statt, obwohl der P4-Gleichgewichtsdruck über Prot bei 400°C 0,4 atm be-trägt. Hin- und Rückreaktion Prot ⇆ P4,g sind gehemmt, Wird das gleiche Experiment nach Zugabe von J2 durchgeführt, so sublimiert Prot schnell.Die thermodynamische Berechnung zeigt, daß es sich nicht um einen chemischen Transport über die in hoher Konzentration in der Gasphase vorhandenen Molekeln P2J4 und PJ3 handelt. Entscheidend ist vielmehr, daß J2 die Einstellung des thermodynamischen Gleichgewichts zwischen Prot und P4,g katalysiert.Die Zugabe von Cl2 oder Br2 anstelle von J2 hat keine hiermit vergleichbare katalytische Wirkung.
