α-Sulfonyl Ethers, 6. Ester Condensations of Arylsulfonylmethyl Ethers with Aromatic Carboxylates and Reactions of the Resulting Ambident Anions of α-Methoxy-ß-oxosulfonesSulfonylmethyl ethers 1 as new methylene compounds in ester condensations are condensed with aromatic carboxylates 2 to yield α-alkoxy-ß-oxosulfones 3. Optimal results were obtained using phenyl esters and potassium tert-butoxide in absolute THF. As ambident nucleophiles the anions of α-alkoxy-ß-oxosulfones yield products of C-alkylation 7 with „soft“ acids such as alkyl halides 6a′-c′ without hydrogen in ß-position. With „hard“ acids such as acyl halides 6e′-g′ or chloromethyl methyl ether (6d′) there is found O-substitution with formation of Z,E-isomeric sulfonylreductone ethers 8. Eliminations take place with alkylating agents 6h′-j′ bearing hydrogen in ß-position to yield olefines.
Notes:
