Notes: A simple and inexpensive method for enriching tortillas with soy proteins was studied. The method consisted of application of the traditional process for making corn tortillas to whole raw corn-soybean mixtures: lime cooking of a mixture, allowing the cooked mixture to stand overnight in the cooking liquor, washing the mixture with tap water, grinding the cooked mixture into a dough, and making tortillas from the dough. This method of enrichment was found to give tortillas with significantly higher protein content and protein quality than normal un-enriched tortillas. PER and NPU values of tortillas containing 8% and 16% soya were found to be comparable to those obtained with tortillas enriched with soy flour or with amino acids lysine and tryptophane. The presence of soybeans in tortillas so enriched was found to be not significantly detectable by a trained panel, at least up to a soya level of 16%. Toxic factors present in raw soybeans were not detected in enriched tortillas by the urease method, having been apparently inactivated by the tortilla-making process. Enrichment by this method is cheaper than enrichment with soy flour or with amino acids. The method permits uniform introduction of soya proteins within the tortillas, and changes neither food recipes nor eating habits.

Notes: . A mathematical model to predict water quality in a surface-groundwater system is under development. This project is being sponsored by the Environmental Protection Agency. The ultimate goal of this study is to obtain cause and effect relationships between pollutant sources and the ensuing concentrations at different locations in a basin. Several programs are used to model the various hydrologic processes occurring in nature, namely: rainfall, runoff, flow in surface bodies of water, infiltration, and groundwater flow. At every time step in the simulation, the water quantity computations for the above hydrologic models are performed first. Subsequently, the results of these computations, typically in the form of flow velocities, are used as input to the water quality calculations. The water quality routines involve the modeling of the associated physical, chemical, and biological processes. In this study, emphasis is being placed on pollution in agricultural areas. Accordingly the Lake Apopka basin in Central Florida is being used as the application site.

Notes: SYNOPSIS By using the split-pair method autogamy was induced in Stylonychia mytilus Ehrenberg and S. muscorum Kahl, and the process was thoroly studied in the former. The pairs split early in conjugation continued the process as autogamonts and never united again altho they were placed in the same depression slide. The pattern of nuclear behavior during autogamy closely resembles that reported for conjugation. The fusion of pronuclei at metaphase is usually observed, but it occasionally fails and the stationary pronucleus appears to continue its development as a hemicaryon. The macronuclear anlage and the definitive micronuclei differentiate from particular products of the 3rd postgamic division.

Notes: The haemoglobins and globins of the roach, Rutilus rutilus (L.) and the rudd, Scardinius erythrophthalmus (L.) have been studied by starch gel electrophoresis. At all stages of development studied, the roach and rudd haemoglobins give a similar electrophoretic pattern, the young fish of about 2 cm standard length possessing three separate haemoglobins, of which two bands only persist in the adult. The evolutionary significance of multiple haemoglobins in fishes is briefly discussed.
