Notes: Abstract The addition of the proper amount of ammonium to the culture medium containing nitrate as nitrogen source enhanced the growth rate of Anabaena viguieri. The amount of geosmin produced by these cells varied with the concentrations of ammonium added. A negative correlation between the amount of geosmin produced and of the growth rate of cells was revealed. This was also found in cells grown on various forms of nitrogen sources. Without supply of any nitrogen compound, this organism is capable of fixing gaseous nitrogen, and under these conditions the cells grew relatively slowly. However, they produced more geosmin (per unit protein mass) than cells grown in the presence of combined nitrogen. The isolation of heterocysts, in which nitrogen was fixed, showed that these cells produced higher amounts of geosmin than vegetative cells. The possible relation of nitrogen assimilation to the production of geosmin in the cells was discussed.

Notes: Summary. We introduce the concept of least supported basis, which is very useful for numerical purposes. We prove that this concept is equivalent to the local linear independence of the basis. For any given locally linearly independent basis we characterize all the bases of the space sharing the same property. Several examples for spline spaces are given.

Notes: The Arcachon Bay Plio-Quaternary aquifer, located in a flat poorly-drained region which receives one m annual precipitation, has a shallow water table which impedes agricultural development. It is composed of a 50-100 m thick body of well-sorted clean sand and gravel which has excellent hydrodynamic properties and much fresh ground water in storage. This affluent aquifer is underlain by, and interconnected with, a relatively poor calcareous aquifer of Miocene age.Leakage to the Miocene aquifer, inferred from geologic and hydrogeologic observations, was calculated by water budgeting and Darcy's law to be on the order of 1.5 m3/s. This rate, about 15 percent of the annual precipitation, is nearly half the recharge rate to the Plio-Quaternary aquifer.Schoeller's chloride method was used to estimate recharge to the Plio-Quaternary aquifer, and indicated that this recharge amounts to more than 35 percent of the annual precipitation. The calculation of the water budget supported this finding. The evapotranspiration rate, based on Thornthwaite's method, is more than 55 percent of the annual precipitation. High recharge and evapotranspiration rates, a direct consequence of the relief, permeability of soils, and occurrence of hot summers, are coupled with a low surface runoff.Exploitation of the Plio-Quaternary aquifer can be planned confidently for irrigation and water-supply purposes. Drainage improvement, needed for extensive farming of the lands, will also result from such exploitation. These development measures are suggested to be tailored and staged in the framework of the master plan aimed to develop and conserve the Arcachon Bay area and the region it is part of.Descriptors: subhumid environment, shallow water table, multiple-aquifer systems, leaky aquifers, Darcy's law, aquifer recharge, Schoeller's chloride method, water budget, ground-water quality, environmental hydrogeology, development and conservation.Identifiers: shallow leaky aquifers in subhumid environment.

Notes: The rapid industrialization occurring in developing regions of the world brings not only economic benefits, but changes in the types and severity of health and environmental problems that each region experiences. As the industrialized world moves toward the use of risk assessment methodologies to aid in problem evaluation and regulatory and policy decision analysis, it seems inevitable that these methodologies will be applied globally. The changes brought about by rapid industrialization, however, must be viewed within the context of societies that are still struggling with the more traditional and basic environmental problems associated with urban and rural poverty. The urgency of development and the lack of adequate resources for characterizing health and environmental changes, often present under these circumstances, offer special challenges to the application of risk assessment methodologies.

Notes: Summary Densely saturated genetic maps of neutral genetic markers are a prerequisite either for plant breeding programs to improve quantitative traits in crops or for evolutionary studies. cDNA and genomic clones from maize were utilized to initiate the construction of a RFLP linkage map in Sorghum bicolor. To this purpose, an F2 population was produced from starting parental lines IS 18729 (USA) and IS 24756 (Nigeria) that were differentiated with regard to many morphological and agronomical traits. A total of 159 maize clones were hybridized to the genomic DNA of the two parents in order to detect polymorphism: 154 probes hybridized to sorghum and 58 out of these were polymorphic. In almost all of the cases hybridization patterns were similar between maize and sorghum. The analysis of the segregation of 35 polymorphic clones in an F2 population of 149 individuals yielded five linkage groups. The three principal ones recall regions of maize chromosomes 1, 3 and 5: in general, colinearity was maintained. A possible inversion, involving a long region of maize chromosome 3, was detected. Simulations were also performed to empirically obtain a value for the lowest number of individuals of the F2 population needed to obtain the same linkage data.

Notes: Summary Cellular membrane stability (CMS) is a physiological index widely used to evaluate thermostability in plants. The genetic basis of the character has been studied following two different approaches: restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis, and the effects of segregating heat shock protein (HSP) loci. RFLP analysis was based on a set of recombinant inbreds derived from the T32 × CM37 F1 hybrid and characterized for about 200 RFLP loci. Heritability of CMS estimated by standard quantitative analysis was 0.73. Regression analysis of CMS on RFLPs detected a minimum number of six quantitative trait loci (QTL) accounting for 53% of the genetic variability. The analysis of the matrices of correlation between RFLP loci, either within or between chromosomes, indicates that no false assignment was produced by this analysis. The effect of HSPs on the variability of the CMS was tested for a low-molecular-weight peptide (HSP-17) showing presence-absence of segregation in the B73 × Pa33 F2 population. Although the genetic variability of the character was very high (h 2=0.58) the effect of HSP-17 was not significant, indicating either that the polypeptide is not involved in the determination of the character or that its effect is not statistically detectable.

Notes: Summary Fragments of extensional Martin-Löf type theory without universes,ML 0, are introduced that conservatively extend S.A. Cook and A. Urquhart'sIPV ω. A model for these restricted theories is obtained by interpretation in Feferman's theory APP of operators, a natural model of which is the class of partial recursive functions. In conclusion, some examples in group theory are considered.

Notes: Abstract The imager of the infrared satellite ISO will allow spectral imaging under very low flux conditions in the two to-eighteen-microns range, close to the fundamental limit of the zodiacal background photon noise. To optimize the performance of the imager, we must use an internal calibration device, mainly to track changes in the responsivity of the pixels of the detectors arrays, the limit of detection greatly depending upon the quality of the flat field corrections in certain cases. The first section introduces ISO and its infrared imager and emphasizes the necessity of in-flight calibration. The following chapter presents the specifications for the internal calibration device. The chosen design for the flight model which consists of an infrared emitter and two integrating spheres, is presented in the third chapter. The last part describes the cryogenic bench dedicated to relative photometric tests, the absolute calibration is made in the camera. Endly we present the results obtained with this facility and final tests to achieve the qualification of the device.
