Notes: The dipolar demagnetizing field in nuclear magnetic resonance of liquids is a convenient means of measuring the scattering function corresponding to a two-species spatial correlation function. In particular, the method applies where the distance to be measured is long compared to the diffusion length. Here we explore theoretically and experimentally the dipolar demagnetizing field scattering in the oil phase of a polydisperse oil/water emulsion. The initial spin grating is created in one phase, and the scattering from the other phase is observed. The experimental results confirm that structural properties of the system, including the average bubble size distribution, can be probed using the dipolar field. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Southern Water has implemented a large capital-investment programme in order to meet the requirements of the EU Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive. Within Southern Water, the Directive will result in a doubling in the quantity of wastewater sludge to be treated. In order to minimise the amount of sludge to be transported and produce a stabilised sludge which is suitable for recycling to agricultural land, the company's sludge strategy is based on treatment by mesophilic anaerobic digestion. This paper (a) highlights some of the consequences of operating a high-rate digestion plant, and (b) focuses on areas such as depositions in thickened sludge digester feed lines, the start-up procedures for high-rate digesters, foaming, hair and fibre build-up problems and treatment failure caused by toxicity inhibition. All these problems have been corrected or controlled and have resulted in Southern Water revising and updating its design manuals and standards, to prevent such future difficulties.

Notes: Anacystis nidulans disappeared rapidly from culture in the presence of an unidentified species of Ochromonas. Disappearance was light-independent and could be induced neither by bacteria associated with, nor by soluble products released from the flagellate. Electronmicrographs of mixed cultures revealed numerous A. nidulans cells in various stages of digestion within vacuoles of Ochromonas. Evidently the disappearance of the alga from culture resulted from phagotrophy by the chrysomonad. A 2-stage digestive process is suggested whereby A. nidulans cells are initially sequestered in the posterior “leucosin” vacuole and then undergo the terminal stages of digestion and elimination in smaller, peripheral vacuoles.

Notes: The sequencing of the entire genetic complement of Streptomyces coelicolor A3(2) has been completed with the determination of the 365 023 bp sequence of the linear plasmid SCP1. Remarkably, the functional distribution of SCP1 genes somewhat resembles that of the chromosome: predicted gene products/functions include ECF sigma factors, antibiotic biosynthesis, a gamma-butyrolactone signalling system, members of the actinomycete-specific Wbl class of regulatory proteins and 14 secreted proteins. Some of these genes are among the 18 that contain a TTA codon, making them targets for the developmentally important tRNA encoded by the bldA gene. RNA analysis and gene fusions showed that one of the TTA-containing genes is part of a large bldA-dependent operon, the gene products of which include three proteins isolated from the spore surface by detergent washing (SapC, D and E), and several probable metabolic enzymes. SCP1 shows much evidence of recombinational interactions with other replicons and transposable elements during its history. For example, it has two sets of partitioning genes (which may explain why an integrated copy of SCP1 partially suppressed the defective partitioning of a parAB-deleted chromosome during sporulation). SCP1 carries a cluster of probable transfer determinants and genes encoding likely DNA polymerase III subunits, but it lacks an obvious candidate gene for the terminal protein associated with its ends. This may be related to atypical features of its end sequences.

Notes: Testosterone induced papillomata in 85% (11/13) of initially non-papillomatous white suckers Catostomus commersoni and increased papillomata growth in 100% (16/16) of initially papillomatous suckers. 17β-oestradiol induced papillomata in 83% (10/12) of initially nonpapillomatous suckers and increased papillomata growth in 100% (16/16) of initially papillomatous suckers. Less than 29% (4/14) of white suckers injected with tamoxifen developed papillomata, while complete papillomata regression was observed in 71% (10/14) of initially papillomatous suckers. In control groups 59% (27/46) of suckers either retained or developed papillomata and 27% (6/24) of suckers exhibited tumour regression. Protein kinase C (PKC) activity was significantly depressed and ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) activity was significantly elevated in steroid-treated papillomata v. normal lip epidermis. ODC activity was significantly depressed in tamoxifen-injected, regressing papillomata. There were no significant differences in plasma oestrogen and testosterone levels between papillomatous and nonpapillomatous female fish from a site contaminated with persistent organic chemicals and an uncontaminated reference site. Similarly, no significant differences in testosterone and 11-ketotestosterone levels were observed between papillomatous and non-papillomatous male fish.

Notes: Reductive dechlorination of perchloroethylene (PCE) and trichloroethylene (TCE) by vitamin B12 is an analogue of the microbial reductive dechlorination reaction and is presently being applied as a remediation technique. Stable carbon isotopic analysis, an effective and powerful tool for the investigation and monitoring of contaminant remediation, was used to characterize the isotopic effects of reductive dechlorination of PCE and TCE by vitamin B12 in laboratory microcosms. In laboratory experiments, 10 mg/L vitamin B12 degraded 〉90% of the initial 20 mg/L PCE with TCE, the primary product of PCE degradation, accounting for between 64% and 72% of the PCE degraded. In experiments with TCE, 147 mg/L vitamin B12 degraded 〉90% of the initial 20 mg/L TCE with cis-dichloroethene (cDCE), the primary product of degradation accounting for between 30% and 35% of the TCE degraded. Degradation of both PCE and TCE exhibited first-order kinetics. Strong isotopic fractionation of the reactant PCE and of the reactant TCE was observed over the course of degradation. This fractionation could be described with a Rayleigh model using enrichment factors of −16.5%o and −15.8%o for PCE, and −17.2%o and −16.6%o for TCE. Fractionation was similar in all experiments, with a mean enrichment factor of −16.5%o ± 0.6%o. The occurrence of such large enrichment factors indicates that isotopic analysis can be used to monitor the dechlorination of PCE and TCE by vitamin B12 and remediation of ground water plumes. Evidence indicates that isotopic fractionation is taking place during complexation of the chlorinated ethenes to vitamin B12, as has been suggested for reductive dechlorination by zero valent iron. The differences between e values for this reaction and those observed for anaerobic biodegradation of the chlorinated ethenes suggest that there may be differences in the rate-determining step for these two processes.
