    Notizen: Understanding the magnetic switching behavior in micron and submicron scale specimens is important for a number of applications. In this study, magnetic-tunnel junctions of various sizes and shapes were fabricated and their switching behavior was studied in detail. Using exchange bias to offset the magnetic response of one electrode, the response of the other (free) electrode was determined from measurements of junction resistance. Switching threshold curves were measured by sweeping magnetic fields in both easy and hard direction. Single domain like switching was observed in some of our smallest submicron junctions. The observed behavior was compared with predictions from the Stoner–Wohlfarth rotational model and from numerical calculations. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: An integrated infinity-focused fiber optic probe designed for cone penetrometer and hand-held use and constructed at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories is described and evaluated for performance. Throughput efficiency is calculated, distance dependence, background levels, and sensitivity to heterogeneity in samples is evaluated. Representative spectra are presented that make use of the major performance advantages of this probe, which are (a) background rejection, (b) low sample light fluences, (c) distant viewing, (d) sample penetration, and (e) sample averaging capability. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Abstract. Sustaining soil fertility under agricultural intensification and expansion onto marginal lands is a significant challenge in the Nepalese Middle Mountains. In a detailed watershed study it was shown that the overall soil fertility is poor, forest soils display the poorest conditions as a result of biomass removal, and sustaining agriculture is questionable due to the transformation from traditional to multiple cropping systems. Parent material is a significant factor influencing low phosphorus status while insufficient inputs create deficiencies in total carbon, nitrogen and bases. A nutrient budget model was developed to assess inputs, redistribution and losses relative to soil fertility. Yield, input and management data obtained from farm interviews, and soil analysis data were used in the calculation of nutrient budgets. Results from modelling indicate declining soil fertility under rainfed agriculture, forest and rangelands, and marginal conditions under irrigated agriculture subject to intensive cultivation. Nutrient deficits were relatively low for irrigated rice-wheat systems, which benefit from nutrient inputs via sediments and irrigation waters, but the introduction of triple cropping showed greater deficits. Nutrient balances were most critical under rainfed maize production where 94% of the farms were in deficit. Current shortages of organic matter make elimination of nutrient deficits problematic but improvement of composting, biological N-fixation and fertilizer efficiency and reducing erosion were found to be potential options.

    Notizen: Measurements have been made of the time dependence of magnetization, under constant applied field conditions, of thin films of Tb–Fe–Co alloy. The results have been analyzed using a model in which it is assumed that magnetization proceeds by thermal activation of irreversible switching of the magnetic moments of identical elementary volumes. It is assumed that the activation energy for switching, intrinsically the same for all elementary volumes, varies according to local interactions. Values of the fluctuation field Λ are derived and it is found that for the films examined, Λ is independent of magnetization M and the applied field. It is shown that information about the magnetic interactions between the elementary volumes, due to exchange and demagnetizing fields, may be derived from graphs of dM/dt vs M. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Based on a detailed analysis of polarized Raman and luminescence measurements of a "mosaic'' diamond film, symmetry properties of a ubiquitous point defect observed in diamond films are determined. Specifically, the defect, which gives rise to emission at 738 nm, is determined unequivocally to be a 〈110〉-oriented defect with the transition dipole moment of the center oriented along the 〈110〉 symmetry axis. These results represent the first analysis of the symmetry properties of this point defect and aid in the development of structural model of the center. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Thermal stresses that develop in aluminum interconnects upon cooling from an annealing temperature are investigated using crystal plasticity theory. The crystal plasticity model is implemented assuming either isotropic hardening or a physically based hardening model developed for single crystals. The dependence of the predicted thermal stresses on crystal orientation and on interconnect aspect ratio is examined. The results are compared with recent observations of electromigration-induced transgranular voids to ascertain the contribution of the thermal stresses in the failure of aluminum interconnects. The analysis clearly demonstrates the necessity of accounting for all slip systems when modeling the effects of texture in single-crystal thin films. In addition, the calculations suggest that proper consideration of the hardening description is necessary for accurate predictions of thermal stresses. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: GaN films were grown on (100) GaAs substrates by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition and were found to be of (200) cubic or (111) cubic/(0002) hexagonal phase. Their photoluminescence characteristics remained invariant with material phase. We report assignment of band-edge photoluminescence near 3.36 eV and 3.15–3.31 eV in apparently cubic GaN to intrinsic/bound excitons and phonon-assisted, donor-acceptor pair recombination respectively, on the basis of observed temperature and intensity dependences. A free exciton energy of 3.375 eV is deduced at 6.5 K. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Thermal wave interferometry (TWI) has been used to measure the thermophysical properties of hydroxyapatite (HA) coatings, prepared by the plasma-spraying process on titanium alloy substrates. The properties measured were thermal diffusivity, thermal conductivity, thermal effusivity, and volumetric heat capacity and the optical absorption coefficient. The thermal conductivity obtained was found to be of similar magnitude to that of human tooth enamel. The results presented confirm the usefulness of TWI as a nondestructive technique for the characterization of plasma-sprayed HA coatings. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.
