Equilibria Between Diastereomeric Substituted 1,2-DibromoethanesThe isomerization rates and thereby the equilibrium constants between some diastereomeric pairs of vicinal dibromides in carbon tetrachloride with tetrabutylammonium bromide as catalyst have been determined. For the 2,3-dibromobutanes the temperature dependence of the equilibrium constant shows that the threo (racemic) isomer is 0.57 kcal/mole higher in enthalpy than the erythro (meso) isomer; the entropy difference between the isomers is close to zero. For 1-phenyl-1,2-dibromopropane and diethyl 2,3-dibromosuccinate at 50° the threo isomer is the less stable by 0.44 and 0.8 kcal/mole, respectively. Vicinal HMR coupling constants and literature values are analyzed to give the possible enthalpies of interaction between gauche substituents. The estimated conformational energies and populations are in general agreement with the observed difference of the diastereomeric energy.
Notes:
