Notes: Abstract The carabid fauna in three city parks of Kiel and in two beech woods in the surroundings was analysed by pitfall traps. 26 species (1667 individuals) were caught from April to August 1976. The carabids with high density in the city were euryecious, mainly of minor body size, mostly unable to fly and hibernated as larvae (probably preadaptations to life in the city). Dominant species in the city parks were:Nebria brevicollis, Patrobus atrorufus, Platynus assimilis, Notiophilus biguttatus, Pterostichus melanarius, Abax parallelopipedus, andCalathus piceus. The city parks were inhabited by a characteristic carabid fauna: the measure of proportional overlap ofSchoener with the carabid fauna in the wood was low. The same was true for the spider fauna in the botanical garden of Kiel (with 7 habitat types) in comparison to similar habitats in the surroundings. The diversity (index ofBrillouin) of the carabid fauna in the city parks was low; the diversity of the spider fauna in the botanical garden, however, was as high as in comparable habitats outside the city. The number of carabid species was correlated with the structural diversity of the green islands in the city, not with their area.

Notes: Abstract The distribution of 17 dominant gall-inducing arthropods and 12 leaf miners on woody plants was analysed in the city of Kiel and surrounding habitats. The number of species and the diversity of the fauna in the two landscapes did not differ very much.Pemphigus bursarius, Schizoneura ulmi undStigmella argentipedella preferred trees in the city. In the city predominated plant parasites that hibernate on their host plant, while species overwintering in the litter on the ground or in the soil were suppressed. Important habitat factors may be mechanical perturbations near the ground (removal of leaf litter, pavement on the ground, trampling, digging of the soil). The number of species declined with decreasing size of the habitat islands (wood — bushes, hedges — individually growing trees or groups of trees on grassland — road trees), the species hibernating in the vegetation layer were favoured.

Notes: Abstract LetQ be the distribution of the suitably normalized sum of i. i. d.k-dimensional random vectors (k≥2) and letf be a measurable real valued function of the formf(z 1,...,z k )=z 1+r(z 2,...,z k ), where the measurable functionr fulfills certain regularity conditions. A Berry-Esseen-type inequality is derived for the one-dimensional distributionP=Qf −1.

Description: The Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) space research program was directed toward modeling the gravitational field of the earth from an analysis of the Doppler shifts on the transmitted frequencies of the satellites as obtained by the tracking stations. Emphasis is on the satellites involved and the methods used in accomplishing this aim.

Description: The Biostack III experiment onboard the Apollo spacecraft during the Apollo Soyuz Test Project complemented the Biostack I and II experiments of the Apollo 16 and 17 missions. The objectives of these experiments were to study the biological effects of individual heavy cosmic particles of high energy loss (HZE) not available on earth, to study the influence of additional space flight factors, to obtain knowledge on the mechanism by which HZE particles damage biological materials, to get information on the spectrum of charge and energy of the cosmic ions in the spacecraft, and to estimate the radiation hazards to man in space.
