    Notes: Abstract From four strains of the gliding phototrophic bacterium Chloroflexus aurantiacus, the as yet un-known bacteriochlorophyll c S was isolated in addition to small amounts of the know bacteriochlorophyll a P. The new bacteriochlorophyll c S is the main photosynthetic pigment of these organisms under the growth conditions used. It is different from the known bacteriochlorophylls c, as could be shown unequivocally by chromatographic examinations. Evidence for the structure of the new bacteriochlorophyll c S was obtained from mass spectra. The u.v./vis.-spectra and the chromatographic behavior are in accord with the suggested structure. The result includes two particularly interesting aspects: 1. Unlike the bacteriochlorophylls c, d, and e of the Chlorobiaceae, bacteriochlorophyll c S of Chloroflexus is not a mixture of isomeric and homologous molecules; 2. the esterifying alcohol of the propionic acid side chain is neither farnesol nor another isoprenoid alcohol, but is the straight chain aliphatic (C-18) stearylalcohol.

    Description / Table of Contents: Chromatographic Separation and Characterization of the Bacteriomethylphaeophorbides eThe solution of a difficult separation problem concerning various methylphaeophorbides 4 from bacteriochlorophyll e (mixture 1) of Chlorobium phaeovibrioides by using adsorbents of small particle size and improved chromatographic techniques is demonstrated. The components of 4, obtained for the first time in pure form, are unambiguously characterized and their mass- and 1H-NMR spectra are discussed.
    Notes: Die Lösung eines schwierigen Trennproblems durch den Einsatz von Adsorbentien geringer Korngröße und verbesserter chromatographischer Techniken wird am Beispiel der Methylphäophorbide e 4 des Bacteriochlorophylls e (Gemisch 1) aus Chlorobium phaeovibrioides beschrieben. Die erstmals in reiner Form erhaltenen Komponenten von 4 werden eindeutig charakterisiert und ihre Massen- und 1H-NMR-Spektren diskutiert.

Pfenning, der die hier untersuchten Organismen als erster isoliert hat, zum 50. Geburtstag gewidmet.The determination of structure and absolute configuration of a new bacteriochlorophyll 1 is described. 1 is mixture of three components (homologues), contains magnesium as central ion and 2(E),6(E)-farnesol as esterifying alcohol. Structure 3 with a 3-formyl group, initially proposed for the methylphaeophorbide of the new bacteriochlorophyll 1 on the basis of spectrometric investigations, has been proven chemically by transformation of 3 to 8, a derivative of bacteriochlorophyll c. A separation of the components of bacteriomethyl-phaeophorbide e (3) by means of adsorption chromatography can be achieved after reduction of the 3-formyl group of 3.
    Notes: Die Bestimmung der Konstitution und absoluten Konfiguration eines neuen Bacteriochlorophylls 1 wird beschrieben. 1 ist ein Gemisch aus drei Komponenten (Homologen), enthalt Magnesium als Zentralatom und 2(E),6(E)-Farnesol als Alkoholkomponente. Eine für das Methylphaophorbid 3 des neuen Bacteriochlorophylls 1 zunächst aufgrund spektrometrischer Untersuchungen abgeleitete Strukturformel mit einer 3-Formylgruppe konnte chemisch durch Umwandeln von 3 in 8, ein Derivat des Bacteriochlorophylls c, bewiesen werden. Nach Reduktion der 3-Formylgruppe von 3 lassen sich die drei Komponenten des Bacteriomethylphaophorbids e (3) adsorptionschromatographisch leicht trennen.

Geburtstag gewidmet.The imidazolide modification of Horeau analyses of bacteriomethylpheophorbides c, d and e (1, 2, 3) allows one to deduce the 2′(R)-configuration for these compounds. The same result is obtained on the interpretation of the 1H-NMR spectra of 6, 7 and 8.
    Notes: Nach der Imidazolidvariante durchgeführte Horeau-Analysen der Bacteriomethylphaophorbide c, d und e (1,2,3) gestatten es, die 2′(R)-Konfiguration für diese Verbindungen abzuleiten. Zum gleichen Ergebnis führt die Interpretation der 1H-NMR-Spektren von 6, 7 und 8.

    Description / Table of Contents: Structure of New Bacteriochlorophylls from Chloroflexus aurantiacusThe determination of structure and absolute configuration of the new bacteriochlorophylls 1 is described. The structure proposal is proven by spectrometric and chemical investigations. Refined chromatographic methods demonstrate beside the main photosynthetic pigment 1a at least two minor components 1b and 1c, the structures of which are also determined. The esterifying alcohol of the propionic acid side chain is in no case farnesol, for the main component 1a it is the straight-chain aliphatic stearyl alcohol, for 1b and 1c (2E, 7R, 11R)-phytol and all-trans-geranylgeraniol, respectively. The same bacteriophaeophorbide methyl ester 3 is obtained from all three bacteriochlorophylls 1.
    Notes: Die Bestimmung der Konstitution und absoluten Konfiguration der neuen Bacteriochlorophylle 1 wird beschrieben. Der Strukturvorschlag wird durch spektroskopische und chemische Untersuchungen belegt. Verfeinerte chromatographische Methoden zeigen, daß das Hauptphotosynthesepigment 1a noch von mindestens zwei Nebenkomponenten 1b und 1c begleitet wird, deren Struktur ebenfalls aufgeklärt werden konnte. Der veresternde Alkohol der Propionsäureseitenkette ist in keinem Fall Farnesol, sondern bei der Hauptkomponente 1a der unverzweigte aliphatische Stearylalkohol, bei 1b und 1c (2E, 7R, 11R)-Phytol bzw. all-trans-Geranylgeraniol. Aus allen drei Bacteriochlorophyllen 1 wird der gleiche einheitliche Bacteriophäophorbid-methylester 3 erhalten.
