Notes: Abstract From four strains of the gliding phototrophic bacterium Chloroflexus aurantiacus, the as yet un-known bacteriochlorophyll c S was isolated in addition to small amounts of the know bacteriochlorophyll a P. The new bacteriochlorophyll c S is the main photosynthetic pigment of these organisms under the growth conditions used. It is different from the known bacteriochlorophylls c, as could be shown unequivocally by chromatographic examinations. Evidence for the structure of the new bacteriochlorophyll c S was obtained from mass spectra. The u.v./vis.-spectra and the chromatographic behavior are in accord with the suggested structure. The result includes two particularly interesting aspects: 1. Unlike the bacteriochlorophylls c, d, and e of the Chlorobiaceae, bacteriochlorophyll c S of Chloroflexus is not a mixture of isomeric and homologous molecules; 2. the esterifying alcohol of the propionic acid side chain is neither farnesol nor another isoprenoid alcohol, but is the straight chain aliphatic (C-18) stearylalcohol.

Description / Table of Contents: Substituted 1-AzaadamantanesSubstituted 1-azaadamantanes of type 14 are facilely prepared from the six-membered rings 2. Functionalized derivatives 2 of cyclohexane are easily synthesized from α,β-unsaturated ketones and dimethyl malonate or by similar procedures. With hexamethylenetetramine as partner the azatricyclic products 14 are formed in one step from 2. The Mannich-type mechanism of the key reaction is discussed, and the 1H NMR data are analyzed.

Description / Table of Contents: Note on a Simple Method for the Separation of Chlorophyll Derivatives of the a- and b-SeriesAn efficient, fast, and inexpensive method for the separation of metal-free derivatives of chlorophyll a (1) and chlorophyll b (2) in gram quantities, exemplified by the phaeophorbide a (or b) methyl esters (3) or (4), is described. This method is based on the partition between aqueous formic acid and tetrachloromethane. 3 and 4 are valuable key intermediates for preparative and spectroscopic studies.
Notes: Am Beispiel der Phäophorbid a/b-Methylester (3) bzw.

Notes: Natural Tetrapyrrol Derivatives for the Photodynamic Therapy, 2.  -  Model Reactions for Direct C-C Linkages of PorphyrinsUntil now, there is a lack of information about the structure of the active components in the diagnosis and photodynamic therapy of cancer with hematoporphyrin derivatives (HPD). We describe the formation of HPD in terms of benzyl cation chemistry. Selective formation of the C - C-linked model compounds 4, 5 by reaction of protoporphyrin dimethyl ester (2) with electron-rich aromatic compounds as well as of 9 - 12, 15-17, obtained by reaction of the porphyrin dimethyl esters 2, 6, 7, and 8, with carbon electrophiles (preformed Mannich salts), results from this concept.

Notes: Stereocontrolled Syntheses of Mannich Bases and γ-Amino AlcoholsThe reaction of enantiomerically pure SMP enamines 2 with iminium tetrachloroaluminates 3 yields optically active Mannich bases 4. Diastereoselective reduction of 4 gives γ-amino alcohols 5 with the desired configuration.

Description / Table of Contents: Bacteriochlorophyll f. - Partial Synthesis and the Behaviour of Some DerivativesStarting with chlorophyll a/b mixture 5/6 from green plants, we describe the partial synthesis of the bacteriophaeophorbide f methyl ester 7. This is a derivative of bacteriochlorophyll f (4). We postulate the existence of 4 as a natural product, though it has not yet been isolated. Methods for the separation of the epimeric compounds 7 are described.

Description / Table of Contents: Chromatographic Separation and Characterization of the Bacteriomethylphaeophorbides eThe solution of a difficult separation problem concerning various methylphaeophorbides 4 from bacteriochlorophyll e (mixture 1) of Chlorobium phaeovibrioides by using adsorbents of small particle size and improved chromatographic techniques is demonstrated. The components of 4, obtained for the first time in pure form, are unambiguously characterized and their mass- and 1H-NMR spectra are discussed.
