Description: In 1893, Gestro founded the genus Ceroplophana, only including the simultaneously described species C. modiglianii Gestro. He considered the genus \xe2\x80\x94 based on the only known specimen \xe2\x80\x94 closely related to Peperonota Westwood, Didrepanephorus Wood-Mason, and Dicaulocephalus Gestro.\nFor rutelines, the males in these genera have strikingly developed secondary sexual characters. Gestro\'s species was the first representative from an insular locality of this South-East Asian group (Si Ramb\xc3\xa9, Batakland, North Sumatra; this locality is mentioned on the map in the report of the explorer who collected the material, Modigliani, 1891).\nRecently I could study seven \xe2\x99\x82 of modiglianii from West Malaysia. They show striking differences from Gestro\'s description. Gestro\'s type specimen could not be traced in the Museo Civico di Storia Naturale at Genova (E.\nTortonese, in litt.). Fortunately, Dr. Erber provided me with six \xe2\x99\x82 and the Berlin Museum with one \xe2\x99\x82 all from North Sumatra and collected partly in the same area as Gestro\'s specimen. Consequently a direct comparison became possible.\nThe differences between the Sumatran and Malaysian specimens described and figured below appear to be constant. Both series include insects of varying size and correspondingly developed head armatures. The identical parameres and the general appearance suggest a close relationship, so only a subspecific rank seems justified for the West Malaysian form, which I name Ceroplophana modiglianii Gestro subsp. malaysiana (pl. 1).\nDue to the indicated differences the to be completed in several respects: Gestro:

Description: A revision of the Indo-Australian species and notes on the African species of Phaeochrous are given. Nine new species and three new subspecies are described, viz., Phaeochrous australicus (Australia), compactus (Sri Lanka), elevatus (South India, Sri Lanka), enigmaticus (Java, Bangla Desh, China), lobatus (Philippines), madrassicus (South India), pletus (Timor), portuum (Papua New Guinea), pseudintermedius (Vietnam, South China), P. dissimilis subsp. vietnamicola (Vietnam, South China), emarginatus subsp. buruensis (Moluccas), intermedius subsp. occidentalis (North India, Bhutan).\nA neotype for Phaeochrous emarginatus Castelnau is designated. Two species hitherto considered synonyms of P. emarginatus are recognized as species and subspecies respectively, viz., P. intermedius Pic and P. emarginatus subsp. davidis Fairmaire. Eight species are considered synonyms of P. emarginatus, viz., sumatrensis (Westwood) (lectotype\nhere designated), hirtipes (Macleay) (lectotype here designated), alternatus Fairmaire, asiaticus Lewis (lectotype here designated), pallidus Arrow, celebensis Pic, perroudi Pic, gracilis Petrovitz - the last five are new synonymies. Three species, viz., P. suturalis Lansberge, davidis Fairmaire and benderitteri Pic, are considered subspecies of emarginatus. The status of P. dubius (Westwood), indicus (Westwood), ruficollis Fairmaire, rugosicollis Benderitter, rufus Pic and tonkineus Pic remains doubtful. Phaeochrous nanus Arrow is excluded from Phaeochrous.\nFigures of male genitalia of all species and subspecies, a key and some notes on bionomics, are given. Phaeochrous laeviceps Fairmaire and tenuepunctatus Fairmaire are removed from the list of African species, being no Phaeochrous, and the synonymization of P. insularis Linell with laeviceps is deleted.
