Notes: Summary Colicin factors are thought to fall into two taxonomic groups which differ in, amongst other properties, the molecular weight of the plasmid DNA and the host range of the colicin protein. This hypothesis is supported by the plasmids found in 26 colicinogenic strains. Two small Col factors may have arisen from larger factors, judging from similarities between their colicins.

Notes: Summary An attempt is made to estimate the effect of a sinusoidal variation of the depth of the interface for a two-layer earth model. The source is a line current that varies harmonically with time. A perturbation theory is employed that is valid when the deviation of the sinusoidal interface from a plane is reasonably small compared with a skin depth in the more conductive upper layer. The numerical results indicate that typical impedance and wave-tilt parameters are seriously influenced by the non-uniformity of the overburden thickness.

Notes: Abstract Thallium sulphate inhibited microbial growth, withBacillus megaterium KM, more sensitive to the metal thanSaccharomyces cerevisiae andEscherichia coli. Inhibition ofB. megaterium KM andS. cerevisiae, but not ofE. coli, was alleviated by increasing the potassium concentration of the medium; inhibition of respiration ofS. cerevisiae, but not ofE. coli, was similarly alleviated. Thallium was rapidly bound, presumably to cell surfaces, byS. cerevisiae andE. coli, and was progressively accumulated by energy-dependent transport systems (probably concerned primarily with potassium uptake) with both organisms. Thallium uptake kinetics suggested more than one transport system operated in yeast, possibly reflecting a multiplicity of potassium transport systems. ApparentK m andK i values for competitive inhibition of thallium uptake by potassium indicatedS. cerevisiae to have a higher affinity for thallium uptake than for potassium, whileE. coli had a transport system with a higher affinity for potassium than for thallium. The likely systems for thallium transport are discussed. A mutant ofE. coli with tenfold decreased sensitivity to thallium was isolated and apparently effected surface binding of thallium in amounts equivalent to the wild type organism, but showed no subsequent uptake and accumulation of the metal from buffer, even though it was able to accumulate potassium to normal intracellular concentrations during growth.

Notes: Summary 1. Protection by codeine 20 mg, dextromethorphan 30 mg, noscapine 30 mg, and placebo against citric acid-induced cough was determined in eighteen healthy subjects. 2. Drug differences occurred at 2 1/2 h following ingestion of the drugs but not at 1 1/4 h. 3. Only codeine 20 mg had a greater antitussive action than placebo, but dextromethorphan 30 mg also did not differ from codeine 20 mg. 4. This technique may offer a useful screening test for the activity of new potential antitussive compounds in man.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract Extensive dyke swarms have been identified in basement rocks inland from Suakin with NW, N-S, and E-W trends. Petrographic examination and the results of ten XRF analyses of dykes near Erkowit indicate that they belong to a tholeiitic hornblende microgabbro-microdiorite suite. Eight whole rock K-Ar isotopic analyses suggest two possible periods of emplacement at 616±18 Ma. and 660±19 Ma. ago. These are the first geochemical-geochronological data for Sudanese dykes, and suggest an association with the N.E. African igneous ring-complex province.

Notes: Summary A wide diversity in chromosome complement is found in two species of phasmids of the primitive group Prisopini—Prisopus ariadne Hebard and Prisopus berosus Westwood. P. ariadne has a diploid male complement of 28, comprising 13 pairs of relatively large mediokinetic autosomes and Neo XY sex chromosomes. P. berosus, 2n ♂=49, has relatively small autosomes most of which are mediokinetic, and retains the XO—XX sex mechanism. Chromosomal polymorphism in this species is suggested by the presence of an unequal pair of autosomes and a structural differentiation in the X in one of two males studied. The relative amount of DNA per nucleus in male germ cells (Peulgen cytophotometry) shows a significant difference in total chromosomal content between the complements of the two species. These data are discussed with reference to the cytotaxonomy of phasmids.

Notes: Summary Scanning electron micrographs of barley protoplasts were compared using various preparatory techniques. Numerous features were observed which turned out to be artifactual characteristics of the processing procedure used in collecting and dehydrating the samples. The most successful technique gave protoplasts which presumably maintained their natural structural integrity, as judged by retention of sphericity and absence of holes in the plasma membrane. The relative numbers of fragmented protoplasts and cellular organelles was also greatly reduced.

Notes: Summary A simple method, involving selective Triton X-100 membrane solubilization, has been developed for the isolation of nuclei from barley and tobacco protoplasts which gives a high yield of essentially pure nuclei. The isolated nuclei resembled those in leaf cells and protoplasts when the isolated nuclei were fixed for short times (2 hours, Medium II), except that their chromatin appeared to be more highly condensed and barley nuclei also lacked the outer nuclear membrane. When longer times of fixation (12 hours, Medium I) were used, the isolated nuclei lacked the characteristic condensed chromatin appearance.

Notes: Synopsis In the past few years slow neutron spectrometers of greatly improved resolving power have been developed at many laboratories throughout the world. During the same period advances in techniques of data analysis have aided in producing the information now available on hundreds of neutron resonances. The manner in which the parameters of these resonances give valuable information on nuclear structure will be described. The experimental findings will be reviewed and particular emphasis paid to their bearing on current theoretical nuclear models. The following aspects will be emphasized. 1) The radiation widths of nuclear energy levels and their relationship to theoretical transition probabilities. 2) The size distributions of neutron widths of levels and recent theoretical treatments of these distributions. 3) The average spacings of levels for different nuclei as well as the apparent non-random distribution of spacings for individual nuclei. 4) The probability of compound nucleus formation, or strength function, compared to recent calculations based on the cloudy crystal nuclear model. 5) Recent determinations of the nuclear radius at high and low neutron energies.
