    Notes: Summary An attempt is made to estimate the effect of a sinusoidal variation of the depth of the interface for a two-layer earth model. The source is a line current that varies harmonically with time. A perturbation theory is employed that is valid when the deviation of the sinusoidal interface from a plane is reasonably small compared with a skin depth in the more conductive upper layer. The numerical results indicate that typical impedance and wave-tilt parameters are seriously influenced by the non-uniformity of the overburden thickness.

    Notes: Summary A numerical model is used to simulate a vertical magnetic dipole (VMD), with time harmonic excitation, buried under a segmented overburden. Results are presented in terms of readily measured field quantities. Of special interest are the ellipticities of the magnetic field in the vertical and horizontal planes. These turn out to be very sensitive to the lateral variation of the conductivity structure. Other parameters, such as the vertical magnetic field on the surface, are much less influenced. It is suggested that the combination of such measurements should lead to an optimum system for source location in application to mine rescue operations.

    Notes: Abstract The electromagnetic fields of an electric dipole located inside a cylindrical cavity or empty tunnel are formulated. The results are used to deduce an expression for the change of self-impedance due to the presence of the cavity or tunnel walls. A numerical evaluation of the resultant convergent integral and a summation of the angular harmonic series were performed. An important finding is that the input resistance of the dipole is approximately a constant for frequencies less than about 25 MHz for a typical tunnel radius of 2 m. Such results are shown to be in qualitative agreement with an earlier analysis of an electric dipole over a dissipative half-space.

    Notes: The basic formulation for the mutual coupling between grounded circuits in the presence of a vertical conductor is used to examine the full electromagnetic and induced polarization response for a homogeneous half-space model. Both interfacial polarization at the steel/electrolyte boundary and induced eddy currents in the casing are accounted for in the analysis. It is shown that for mild steel casings the eddy currents, hitherto neglected, play an important role because of their strong frequency dependence. Calculated curves of the appar- ent complex resistivity as a function of frequency show that the overall response can be influenced by the state of corrosion at the surface of the casing.

    Notes: Some numerical results for the apparent resistivity of a homogeneous half space containing a vertical steel well casing as measured by a dipole-dipole array are presented. The basic model includes the electromagnetic and induced polarization effects by allowing for frequency dependent eddy currents and an electrochemical boundary of the well casing. It is shown that the well casing produces an apparent complex resistivity response that could be mistaken for an induced polarization anomaly existing above a hydrocarbon deposit. This response of the well casing is strongly dependent on frequency.

    Notes: Using homogeneous full-space and half-space models, we show that induced-polarization properties of the medium influence the inductive coupling between two circuits. It is suggested that existing methods to interpret electromagnetic sounding data should be viewed with caution if the electro-chemical dispersion is not taken into account.

    Notes: The frequency domain response of a grounded linear circuit is deduced. The model of the ground is a homogeneous conducting half-space whose horizontal and vertical conductivities are specified. The source itself is formulated as an insulated current-carrying wire of finite length lying on the surface that is grounded at its end points. The tangential electric field expressions are used to calculate the induced voltage between two additional electrodes that are connected by an insulated wire. Particular attention is paid to the transient coupling response in the potential circuit when the source current is a step-function of time. Among other things, it is shown that the voltage response is a step-function only if the circuits are at right-angles and if the ground is effectively isotropic and nonpolarizable.

    Notes: Abstract A thin prolate spheroidal void in an infinite conducting circular cylinder is used to model a broken strand in a wire rope. The rope is excited by an azimuthal magnetic line current which is a model for a thin toroidal coil. The anomalous external fields are computed from the induced electric and magnetic dipole moments of the void. The results have applications to nondestructive testing of wire ropes.
