Notes: [Auszug] The experimental facts are as follows. The y-lactones of D-glucuronic acid and L-gulonic acid, when fed to cress seedlings or injected into rats, were found to be transformed, into L-ascorbic acid. D-Galacturonic acid methyl ester, and L-galactonic acid y-lactone behaved similarly. No other sugar ...

Notes: Individual frozen carrot cubes were suspended on wires and dried in a stream of low temperature dry air. One of the cubes was suspended on a thermocouple. During drying the weight and temperature of the product and the specific humidity, velocity and temperature of the air were recorded. An analytical model, utilizing the concept of external and internal resistances to the transfer of heat and mass, was developed for the prediction of the drying rate. The experimental data were used to determine a functional relationship between the internal resistances and the fraction of the original moisture remaining in the product. The drying rates predicted were in good agreement with experimental results.

Notes: Summary The activity of dominant human melanoma tyrosinase isozyme was greatly decreased by certain reducing agents. The number and geometry of phenolic groups as well as free-SH group appear important for enzymic inhibition.

Notes: Summary Compared to normal humans, lung carcinoma patients show increased tyrosinase activity. 7 serum enzymic fractions or carriers were present in the diseased state. Further, serum tyrosinase inhibitory factors generally were decreased in lung carcinoma patients compared to normal individuals.

Notes: Abstract A three-dimensional, time-dependent computer program is used for the stress-strain analysis of elastic-plastic materials subjected to tensile loads. Several geometries are considered. The capabilities and advantages of this explicit finite difference computer program are demonstrated, and recommendations for future applications are made.

Notes: Abstract Experiments and analyses are carried out on the low decelerating and accelerating speed of a flexure crack running in a specimen of a glass plate. The specimen is subjected to a spherical indentation on its upper surface and rests on a knife-edge or ring foundation. The span of the foundation is comparable to the plate thickness so that a three-dimensional stress field is established. The stress distribution is determined analytically in terms of its stretching and bending components. It is shown that the variation of the crack speed depends not on the total surface tensile stress, but on the in-plane stretching stress. The experiment is shown to have produced only a small stretching stress so that the low varying speed of the crack, instead of its high limiting speed, was observed experimentally.

Notes: Abstract It is shown that an indirect synthesis method can be used in the efficient optimal design of multidegree-of-freedon, multidesignelement, nonlinear, transient systems. The technique begins with a limiting performance analysis which requires linear programming for a kinematically linear system, following which the system is selected using system identification methods such that the designed system responds as closely as possible to the limiting performance. The efficiency is a result of the method avoiding the repetitive systems analyses accompanying other numerical optimization methods.

Notes: Engineering stress-strain properties were determined for two polystyrene-polybutadiene-polystyrene (SBS) triblock copolymer elastomers, one consisting of blocks of molecular weight 7000/43000/7000 and the other, 16000/85000/17000. In addition, various blends of these two materials were prepared in order to vary the number-average molecular weight of the blocks in a systematic way while maintaining polystyrene content in the range of 25-28 wt %. Samples were solvent cast from benzene or benzene/heptane mixtures and annealed before testing. Ring specimens were extended to rupture at varying strain rates on an Instron tensile tester. Results indicate that number-average molecular weight has a marked influence on stress-strain behavior over the range of molecular weights and testing conditions employed. The observed behavior is consistent with a systematic increase in the proportion of a mixed interfacial region between the pure polystyrene and polybutadiene domain as molecular weight decreases. The interfacial region contributes to mechanical hystersis, rate sensitivity, and toughness in the SBS materials. Scanning electron photomicrographs of fracture surfaces also showed systematic changes with molecular weight.
