Notes: Abstract The Griffith instability criterion for crack propagation is generalized to provide a criterion for time-dependent crack growth. Our procedure is similar to that of Griffith in its use of a global energy balance. The Griffith method is generalized by the inclusion of the rate-of-energy dissipation term in the balance law. This rate-of-dissipation term is derived to represent the behavior of viscoelastic materials; thus the final results are applicable primarily to polymeric behavior. Our final results are concise analytical expressions [Eqns. (50)] for crack velocity as a function of the creep properties of the material, the level of loading, and the energy or work content of the crack-generated new surface. These analytical solutions are quite general; the primary restriction occurs because they are derived under asymptotic conditions of high- and low-crack velocities. Finally, we compare the analytical predictions with experimental results for a polyurethane elastomer.

Notes: Summary This theory is derived to model the behavior of a dilute suspension of deformable, incompressible elastic spheres within an incompressible Newtonian fluid. It is shown that a full range of viscoelastic effects are evidenced by this type of heterogeneous media. The (isothermal) constitutive relation which governs the macroscopic behavior of the fluid is found to be that of the Coleman-Noll second order theory of incompressible viscoelastic fluids with the related relaxation functions being specified through analytical expressions involving the coefficient, of viscosity of the carrier fluid, the shear modulus of the elastic inclusions and their volume concentration. The relationship of the present work to previous similar analyses is discussed. Also the relationship of the effects seen with the present special theory to some observed effects in the testing of homogeneous polymeric fluids is considered.

Notes: A theoretical and experimental investigation has been conducted of the transverse tensile properties of flexible-resin/ glass-fiber composite lamina. The objective is to increase the elongation at failure of a lamina in a state of transverse tension so that when a lamina is used in a laminate configuration, it does not suffer premature failure (e.g., failure at a lower strain level than that for a lamina in fiber direction tension). We show that the mode of failure in the transverse tensile lamina differs greatly from that in the neat resin. The failure mode in the lamina form is found to be brittle fracture. From this, it follows that the controlling neat resin property is the low elongation modulus rather than the elongation at failure. Significant improvements in the transverse tensile strain at failure were obtained for the flexible-resin/glass-fiber systems studied.

Description: A theory of plate deformation is derived which accounts for the effects of transverse shear deformation, transverse normal strain, and a nonlinear distribution of the in-plane displacements with respect to the thickness coordinate. The theory is compared with lower order plate theories through application to a particular problem involving a plate acted upon by a sinusoidal surface pressure. Comparison is also made with exact elasticity solution of this problem. It is found that when the ratio of the characteristic length of the load pattern to the plate thickness is of the order of unity, lower order theories are inadequate and the present high order theory is required to give meaningful results. Results are given for the bending of symmetric cross-ply and angle-ply laminates. Comparison with exact elasticity solutions indicates that the present plate theory is sufficiently accurate for predicting the behavior of thick laminates.
