Notes: Abstract An upper limit has been calculated on the effective aperture separation or detector thickness of ion drift meters of two fundamental types. The limit applies to meters which compare currents collected by detectors with different view directions at the same retarding potential and to meters which measure the entire thermal ion distribution function. For both types, a single scanned detector may be employed instead of multiple detectors, in which case the limit applies to twice the radius of curvature of the path followed by the detector aperture during a scan, (i.e. the diameter of a spinning payload). The limit was found to be important in two cases. First, in the F region on spacecraft with stringent electrostatic cleanliness requirements, the 10% error limit was found to be 40 cm. Second, in the E region, the limit was found to be ≲1 cm.

Notes: Summary The influence of pH on the expansion of three-phase contact line in the system quartz-dodecyl amine hydro chloride solution-air bubble after rupture of thin liquid film is discussed and explained as a consequence of adsorption density of surfactant at the solid-liquid and liquid-gaseous interface.

Notes: Summary One of the important stages in the process of interaction between a particle and a gas bubble in the liquid phase is the expansion of three-phase contact perimeter immediately after rupture of the thin liquid film. The rate of expansion for the system flat quartz surface/liquid dodecylamine hydrochloride solution is determined by use of a high-speed camera. The results were discussed on the basis of a theory on hydrodynamics of thin liquid films.

Notes: Abstract The impact broadening and shift of RbnS andnD levels by the noble gases He, Ar and Xe have been measured by Doppler-free two-photon absorption from the 5S ground state in a thermionic diode up to high principal quantum numbers. The dependence of the broadening rates onn was found to be in qualitative agreement with theoretical data. While the broadening and shift rates of the RbnS andnD levels due to collisions with He or Ar show only slightly different dependences along the series, the corresponding Rb-Xe data present strong differences indicating large contributions by inelastic collisions. For largen the broadening data were found to be independent of the principal quantum number and the angular momentuml. The measured constant values cannot be explained by taking only into account the polarisation contribution. It was found to be a factor of 1.5 to 2 larger than the corresponding theoretical predictions. The shift rates aren-andl-independent and in satisfactory agreement with theoretical values for large principal quantum numbers.

Notes: Abstract The impact broadening of strontium 5sns 1 S 0, 5snd 1 D 2 and 5snd 3 D 2 levels by He and Xe have been studied by measuring the collisional half-widths of Doppler-free two-photon absorption lines from the 5s 2 1 S 0 ground state in a thermionic diode. Large inelastic contributions to the broadening rates of the levels have been found where the moduli of the quantum defects of different level series are close to each other. A similar but continuousn-mixing behaviour along the series has also been found in our recent investigation on the broadening of Rb levels by noble gases. The broadening rates of the very high levels in Sr were found to be independent on the principal quantum number and the angular momentum of the levels and in good agreement with our recent broadening data of the Rb-He and Rb-Xe systems and the data for Na-He and Na-Xe found by the Columbia group.

Notes: Summary Rate of expansion of three-phase contact perimeter at monolayers of octadecyl amine (substrate:quartz) of different numbers was investigated and the results were discussed on the basis of a theory for dimple formation. Correlations between adsorption density of surfactant at the liquid/gaseous interface, velocity of three-phase contact perimeter and induction time are presented.

Notes: Abstract Phonon properties concerning propagation, frequency spectrum and lifetime in the Terahertz range have been investigated. The phonons have been produced by square wave Joule heating of thin constantan films evaporated onto a strongly doped ruby. Cross sections for phonon scattering at the Cr3+ impurity ions of the ruby were determined as a function of frequency. The theoretical estimate for mass defect scattering given by Klemens [9] is found to agree reasonably with the experimental results. Lifetime measurements indicate that phonons in ruby preferentially propagate in the transversal mode. Phonon frequency spectra in the constantan films were measured under experimental conditions, where the strength of electron phonon coupling is significant; thus electron-phonon relaxation times could be obtained as a function of frequency.

Notes: Abstract We have measured the broadening, and in one case also the shift, of alkalinS andnD Rydberg levels by alkali perturbers (Cs by Cs, Rb by Cs and K, and K by Rb) applying the Doppler-free two-photon technique and thermionic detection. Taking into account recent experimental data for the self-broadening of K and Rb Rydberg levels we found that for low principal quantum numbersn the broadening data of the levels are in agreement within the limits of experimental uncertainty in the pure and mixed cases. For highn we could establish that the broadening of the levels is governed by the perturber-valence electron and the perturber-ion core interaction. With increasingn the broadening rates are only dependent on the sort of perturber. As reported recently for Rb-Rb and K-K, oscillations in the broadening data as a function ofn were also observed for Cs-Cs and in the mixed vapours. Our results do not support recent theories which describe the oscillations in terms of resonances in the scattering of the quasifree valence electron on the perturber atom. In a classical absorption experiment oscillations in the self-broadening and shift of the Cs principal series lines discovered by Mazing and Serapinas were found to be due to satellite structures which are merged in non-Lorentzian line wings.

Notes: Abstract With an improved experimental set-up we have studied the broadening of Rb Rydberg levels by xenon up to principal quantum numbers as high asn≈100 by means of Doppler-free two-photon spectroscopy and the thermionic detection technique. The inealstic part of the collision cross section tends to decrease slowly withn in the range 50≦n≦100 in agreement with theoretical predictions.
