    Description: Identical Bennett radio-frequency ion mass spectrometer instruments on the Pioneer Venus Bus and Orbiter have provided the first in-situ measurements of the detailed composition of the planet's ionosphere. The sensitivity, resolution, and dynamic range are sufficient to provide measurements of the solar-wind-induced bow-shock, the ionopause, and highly structured distributions of up to 16 thermal ion species within the ionosphere. The use of adaptive scan and detection circuits and servo-controlled logic for ion mass and energy analysis permits detection of ion concentrations as low as 5 ions/cu cm and ion flow velocities as large as 9 km/sec for O(+). A variety of commandable modes provides ion sampling rates ranging from 0.1 to 1.6 sec between measurements of a single constituent. A lightweight sensor and electronics housing are features of a compact instrument package.

    Description: The objective of the work reported herein was to explore the use of a continuous operation plasma torch as an ignitor and flameholder for scramjet combustion. This research was motivated by the desire to eliminate the use of pyrophoric or toxic ignition and/or combustion enhancement materials in operational aircraft or shipboard systems. The total temperatures and torch powers used to ignite/flamehold Mach 2 combustion with hydrogen, ethylene, ethane, and methane were determined. The minimum ignition total temperatures for the fuels tested were hydrogen - 1065 R (lowest test temperature); ethylene - 1500 R; ethane - 2000 R; methane - 2700 R. These temperatures were obtained while operating the torch at a nominal 2 kw net power. The torch was shown to be a good ignitor and flameholder in that both hydrogen and hydrocarbon fuels could be stabilized by the torch and would 'blow off' when the torch was extinguished. The effectiveness of the torch was very sensitive to relative fuel injection location. Best combustion resulted when fuel was injected both upstream and downstream of the torch. These results indicated that an adiabatic plasma torch operating at about 2 kw could be an effective ignitor and flameholder for high-speed combustion.

    Description: An investigation was conducted to measure and understand the physical and mechanical effects that occur in boron fibers during and after thermal treatment in a controlled oxygen argon gaseous mixture. Of principal concern was the optimization of this treatment as a secondary processing method for significantly improving fiber tensile strength. Strengthening was accomplished by an oxidation induced axial contraction of the fiber and a resulting axial compression of strength limiting flaws within the fiber's tungsten boride core. Various physical observations were used to develop mechanistic models for oxidation, contraction, and flow formation. Processing guidelines are discussed for possibly exceeding the 5.5 GN/sq m strength limit and also for achieving fiber strengthening during application of boron containing diffusion barrier coatings.

    Description: An investigation of the physical and mechanical effects of thermal treatment in a controlled oxygen-argon atmosphere on boron fibers is reported, with attention to the optimization of such treatment as a secondary processing method for improvement of fiber strength. The strengthening mechanism is comprised of an oxidation-induced axial contraction of the fiber, accompanied by axial compression of strength-limiting flaws within the fiber's tungsten boride core. It was found that after an oxidation contraction of 0.3% near 900 C, and a slight surface etch near 100 C, the average tensile strength of 203-micron fibers increased from 500 to 800 ksi. Various physical observations are used to develop mechanistic models of oxidation, contraction, and the formation of new flaws in the boron sheath at contractions greater than 0.3%.
