Notes: Bush beans, kale and soybeans were used as models for studying the effects of processing by canning and freezing upon 51Cr and 65Zn content. Plants were grown hydroponically, intrinsically labeled with 51Cr and 65Zn, and processed either by canning or freezing. Freezing resulted in 65Zn losses of 10.7% for kale, 8.6% for bush beans, and 6.7% for soybeans. A loss of 3.8% of 51Cr resulted during freezing of bush beans. Canning resulted in 65Zn losses of 23% for kale, 19.7% for bush beans, and 28.8% for soybeans. Canned bush beans and kale contained 40.7% and 62.7% respectively, less 51Cr than unprocessed samples. Freezing resulted in a greater mineral retention than canning. Less opportunity for leaching is available in freezing and reduction in radionuclide content of the vegetables by canning was accounted for by transfer to the drained liquid.

    Notes: Abstract Using the nonmagnetic BONANZA detector for the detection of antineutrons and antiprotons, we measured branching ratios of theJ/ψ into baryonic final states. Our measurements give the new results: $$BR\left( {{J \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {J {\psi \to \overline {\Sigma ^ - } }}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} {\psi \to \overline {\Sigma ^ - } }}\Sigma ^ - } \right) = \left( {0.24 \pm 0.26} \right)\% ;BR\left( {{J \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {J {\psi \to }}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} {\psi \to }}\bar nn\pi ^ + \pi ^ - } \right) = \left( {0.38 \pm 0.36} \right)\% $$ and an independent test for the data of the magnetic detectors.

Notes: Abstract Spectra of positive pions from the processn+p→π ++n+n have been measured for incident neutron energies from 470 MeV to 590 MeV and for laboratory angles up to 20°. The rather broad pion energy spectra and the pronounced anisotropy of the differential cross sections, both indicate an appreciable non-resonant, isoscalar (T=0) contribution to the pion production.

Notes: Abstract Thin sections in the thickness range down to 3–5 μm were produced from bariumtitanate ferroelectric ceramics. The small signal dielectric constant, as well as hysteresis loops were measured. Significant deviations from the bulk properties were observed, when the thickness of the sample was decreased to the average diameter of the grains. The measured results are discussed proposing a model with internal stresses and a distorted surface layer.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The threedimensional steady flow of an incompressible inviscid fluid around a prolate spheroid at incidence is studied. The displacement effect of the body on the uniform onset flow is represented by means of a source distribution on its surface. The modification of the flow by the lift acting on the spheroid is represented by means of a source doublet sheet on the wake surface. The comparison of the calculated pressure distribution on the surface of the spheroid with a pressure distribution measured by other authors shows that the agreement is substantially better when the lift effect is taken into account.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The deflection of a plane turbulent jet in a crossflow is described by a model which takes the effects of entrainment as well as those of crossflow pressure into account. Using this model the centerline and the spread of the jet and the mean velocity averaged over its cross-section can be calculated. Asymptotic analytic solutions are given for the case where the velocity of the unperturbed crossflow is much smaller than that of the unperturbed jet. A comparison of the present calculations with experimental results of other authors shows good agreement.

Notes: Abstract Experimental values of the differential cross section for the reactionn+d→π 0+t at large angles (θ≳50°) in the neutron energy range 460–560 MeV and the known values of the coupling constants $$G_{nn\pi ^O }^2 $$ andG tdn 2 are used to predictdσ/dΩ at smaller angles. The method is based on the use of general analytic properties of the differential cross section in the cosgq-plane.

Notes: Summary Yeast mutants lacking phosphofructokinase activity because of a defect in one of the two genes PFK1 and PFK2 can still perform glycolysis and produce ethanol. However, they differ from normal wild-type yeast in several ways. After a transfer from a sugar-free to a glucose medium, wild-type cells start to produce ethanol right away, mutants only after a lag period of about 90 min. About two-thirds of the carbon atoms released as CO2 from wild-type cells derive from glucose carbon atoms 3 and 4. Mutants with a single defect in one of the two phosphofructokinase genes PFK1 and PFK2 show no such a preferential contribution of these two C-atoms of glucose. All six C-atoms contribute almost equally to CO2 production. We have isolated mutants that block glycolysis in single pfk1 and pfk2 mutants. They could be located in three different genes called BYP1, BYP2 and BYP3 (BYP for bypass). In a byp1 mutant, CO2 derived almost exclusively from C-atoms 3 and 4 of glucose. This is what the classical concept of yeast glycolysis predicts. During a search for metabolites accumulating in pfk and byp mutants, we found sedoheptulose-7-phosphate, a pentosephosphate cycle intermediate not detectable in wild-type cells. An analysis of enzymes acting in the direct oxidation of glucose-6-phosphate and in the pentosephosphate cycle did not show any defects in those activities. It is hypothesized that the pentosephosphate cycle not only functions, in providing phosphorylated derivatives of tetroses and pentoses for biosynthetic needs, but also plays an important role in sugar catabolism and fermentation. This hypothesis also implies that the reaction sequency catalyzed by phosphofructokinase and aldolase covers only part of the total catabolic flux.

Notes: Summary Yeast DNA pools were prepared by ligating partial Sau3A genomic digests from strains carrying various MAL genes into the BamHI site of the yeast-Escherichia coli shuttle vector YRp7. They were used to transform recipient yeast strains that could not utilize maltose since they lacked a classical MAL gene. Transformants were obtained that could use maltose and also formed normal levels of maltase. They were unstable. They would lose the selective marker TRP1 of YRp7 alone, together with the ability to utilize maltose or only the ability to utilize maltose. The insertion of one of the plasmids was used as a hybridization probe for the others and found to share homologous sequences with all. They were then shown to contain the replication origin of the yeast 2 μm circle plasmid and additional genomic digests of total yeast DNA. They hybridized at various degrees of efficiency with several bands, indicating that they were part of a family of repeated sequences. Apparently, it was the combination of the replication origin of the 2 μm circles with the additional sequences that promoted maltose utilization.
