Notes: Grape juices (V. vinifera) from vineyards at three locations in Israel were analyzed for carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen contents, metals, amino acids and glycerol, various stages of fermentation and post-fermentation. The contents varied with respect to the type of grape, area, year of collection and methods of vinification. The glycerol content of wine appears to be related to the duration of fermentation. Correlation analysis reveal relationships between the tartaric acid and calcium contents. A certain correlation is also found with the duration of fermentation. For the purpose of wine characterization and study of changes resulting from technological processes, the variation of chemical composition may serve as useful parameters.

Notes: Abstract This note analyzes the results of Ben-Zion and Spiegel regarding different forms of transfer from rich persons to poor ones. Assuming a more general utility function, not necessarily additive or homothetic, this note shows that a combined policy of income transfer with specific subsidy to the poor consumer can lead to an optimal solution (first best) from the donor's point of view. If it is not possible to differentiate between consumers, a system of subsidy to all consumers can achieve a second best solution.

Notes: [Auszug] The toad skin OLC was extracted from 50 g of back and abdominal toad skin (Bufo viridis) into 500 ml methanol. The methanol was filtered and evaporated and the residue redissol-ved in 20 ml distilled water. Material which was not dissolved was precipitated by high speed centrfugation (100,000g). ...

Notes: The field desorption mass spectral behaviour of benzo[a]pyrene metabolites were studied. Each of the phenol, diol, quinone and diol-epoxide metabolites of benzo[a]pyrene showed a single peak corresponding to the molecular ion. The water soluble glucuronides and sulfate conjugated metabolites showed protonated and cationized molecular ions. With the glucuronides, three peaks were observed and the abundance of these peaks may be indicators for characterization of the three isomeric glucuronides.

Notes: Field desorption ionization of selected monosaccharide isomers by potassium ion attachment in high fields is described. The ionization is obtained with a tungsten wire activated with carbon needles and covered with KH2PO4 salt. In addition to the potassium cationized molecular ions, reproducible fragmentation was obtained at 10 mA and 20 mA typical of the various monosaccharides. For instance, D-glucose tends to lose a water molecule, whereas D-fructose loses primarily methanol under similar conditions. Methanol elimination is suggested to be characteristic of furanoidal ketoses and water elimination for pyranoidal aldoses, whereas glycol elimination occurs for furanoidal aldoses.

Notes: Under electron impact, 6-thiotheophyllines eliminate various fragments from the pyrimidine moiety. In a retro Diels-Alder reaction, they lose the fragment X=C=NCH3 from positions 1 and 2 of the pyrimidine ring. In 6-sulfinyltheophyllines, the sulfinyl group is the main target for fragmentation; it can lose either oxygen or sulfur, and the abundance of [M - 16]+ and [M - 32]+ is much higher than the abundance of the molecular ion. Elimination of the sulfur atom of the 6-sulfinyl substituent, with retention of its oxygen, may be explained by intermediate formation of a ring. All further fragmentations of the 6-sulfinyl derivatives proceed by a primary loss of oxygen or sulfur, followed by elimination of fragments from the pyrimidine moiety, similar to the primary processes, observed in the mass spectra of the 6-thiotheophyllines.
