Description: Increasing salinity of soil and water threatens agriculture in arid and semiarid regions. By itself, the traditional engineering approach to the problem is no longer adequate. Genetic science offers the possibility of developing salt-tolerant crops, which, in conjunction with environmental manipulation, could improve agricultural production in saline regions and extend agriculture to previously unsuited regions.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Epstein, E -- Norlyn, J D -- Rush, D W -- Kingsbury, R W -- Kelley, D B -- Cunningham, G A -- Wrona, A F -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1980 Oct 24;210(4468):399-404.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17837407" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Plasma cholesterol sulfate concentration is increased in patients with recessive X-linked ichthyosis, a disease in which steroid sulfatase activity is absent. In these patients, cholesterol sulfate is found primarily in the low-density lipoprotein fraction of plasma, and the electrophoretic mobility of these lipoproteins is greatly increased.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Epstein, E H Jr -- Krauss, R M -- Shackleton, C H -- AM 28069/AM/NIADDK NIH HHS/ -- HL 18574/HL/NHLBI NIH HHS/ -- RR 00719/RR/NCRR NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1981 Nov 6;214(4521):659-60.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6945674" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Polyene antibiotics such as amphotericin and nystatin increase membrane permeability and thus increase the amount of oxygen consumed in active electrolyte transport. In isolated perfused rat kidneys, the polyenes produced extensive injury to the medullary thick ascending limb, a segment of the nephron with limited oxygen supply. This damage was prevented if reabsorptive transport was inhibited by ouabain. Cell death under these circumstances thus appears to be mediated by increased oxygen demand for transport activity.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Brezis, M -- Rosen, S -- Silva, P -- Spokes, K -- Epstein, F H -- AM18078/AM/NIADDK NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1984 Apr 6;224(4644):66-8.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6322305" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: The great advances made in polymeric structural materials over the past decade have led to their replacement of conventional materials in a wide range of uses including high-performance aerospace applications. This shift in choice of materials is based on economic advantages, simplified fabrication, freedom from corrosion, and lower weight. The trend toward use of polymeric materials will grow as the materials science of this new technology is developed. Better insight into such fundamental problems as the mechanisms by which forces are transferred to the polymer molecule, the surface interactions between polymer phases or polymer and fiber, and the molecular processes by which energy is absorbed during fracture will greatly stimulate the development of this field.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Panar, M -- Epstein, B N -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1984 Nov 9;226(4675):642-6.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17774927" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Through the use of learned symbols, a pigeon accurately communicated information about hidden colors to another pigeon. Each verbal exchange was initiated with a spontaneous request for information. The two pigeons engaged in a sustained and natural conversation without human intervention.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Epstein, R -- Lanza, R P -- Skinner, B F -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1980 Feb 1;207(4430):543-5.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17795640" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Each of three pigeons used a mirror to locate a spot on its body which it could not see directly. Although similar behavior in primates has been attributed to a self-concept or other cognitive process, the present example suggests an account in terms of environmental events.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Epstein, R -- Lanza, R P -- Skinner, B F -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1981 May 8;212(4495):695-6.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17739404" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉
