    Notes: Electrical capacitance was measured on the exposed adductor muscles of sides of beef. Measurements were made with a 3 mV 100kHz current between two parallel needle electrodes in the meat. Capacitance decreased after slaughter, and was correlated with the pH of the longissimus dorsi muscles in both normal (r = 0.94, P 〈 0.005) and in dark-cutting carcasses (r = 0.89, P 〈 0.01). The normal decline of pH postmortem was curtailed in carcasses with dark-cutting meat. However, when adjusted for differences in pH, ciircasses with dark-cutting meat had a lower (P 〈 0.01) capacitance than carcasses with normal meat.

    Notes: Abstract. An extract vaccine against Vibrio anguillarum was compared with other vaccine preparations when administered to rainbow trout intraperitoneally or orally on food. Intraperitoneal vaccination resulted in virtually 100% protection within two weeks whereas oral vaccination gave a maximum protection of 50–70% after eight weeks. When administered intraperitoneally the extract performed better than formalin killed cells but when administered orally formalin killed cells were better. The addition of alum as adjuvant enhanced the response to antigen administered by both routes. Serum agglutinin litres after oral vaccination were low and variable but after intraperitoneal injection they reached a consistent peak of 64. As the response to oral vaccination was so low it was not possible to relate agglutinin titre to protection in a quantitative relationship.

    Notes: Abstract. A formalized bacterin of Vibrio anguillarum, with and without alum adjuvant, was administered intraperitoneally to rainbow trout under farm conditions. Compared with the normal bacterin the adjuvanted preparation caused pathological changes indicative of chronic peritonitis, substantial early mortalities in 3 cm fish, and to a lesser extent in 20 cm fish, and depressed growth rate. No additional degree of protection against artificial challenge was obtained from its use.

    Notes: Summary Population structure and aspects of the reproductive biology of Antarctomysis maxima from South Georgia and the South Orkney Islands were examined. Size frequency analysis indicated that the generation time is two years at South Georgia, but may approach four years at the South Orkneys. Egg production is greater for a given size of female at South Georgia but by virtue of a larger egg, brood production in terms of ash-free dry weight is slightly greater at the South Orkneys. Young are brooded over winter at both sites and are released in spring. Females are clearly capable of breeding twice at South Georgia and it is suggested that this is also the case at the South Orkneys. These results are discussed in relation to other studies on cold water mysids and to environmental adaptations exhibited by other Antarctic marine invertebrates.

    Notes: Summary The interaction between feeding activity, swarming behaviour and vertical migration in Antarctic krill, Euphausia superba Dana, was examined by a combination of laboratory physiology studies and intensive field sampling of a patch of krill located NE of South Georgia, in April 1980. The combined use of echolocation and a series of timed net hauls from discrete depth horizons revealed a diurnal rhythm of swarming behaviour, vertical migration and gut fullness. Laboratory physiological data showed that krill will filter feed throughout the 24 h but with peak activity by night, and that filtration rate is affected by krill density. Biochemical studies in vitro indicated that rates of lipid synthesis are generally highest at the surface and by night. These results are discussed in relation to other studies of krill feeding activity and suggestions made for further research.

    Notes: A variational formulation for the solution of two dimensional, incompressible viscous flows has been developed by one of the authors.1 The main objective of the present paper is to demonstrate the applicability of this approach for the solution of practical problems and in particular to investigate the introduction of boundary conditions to the Navier-Stokes equations through a variational formulation. The application of boundary conditions for typical internal and external flow problems is presented. Sample cases include flow around a cylinder and flow through a stepped channel.Quadrilateral, bilinear isoparametric elements are utilized in the formulation. A single-step, implicit, and fully coupled numerical integration scheme based on the variational principle is employed. Presented results include sample cases with different Reynolds numbers for laminar and turbulent flows. Turbulence is modelled using a simple mixing length model. Numerical results show good agreement with existing solutions.
