Notes: Abstract The usefulness of collagen fibers and the YIGSR sequence (Tyr-lle-Gly-Ser-Arg) of laminin for nerve regeneration were examined in vivo. Type I collagen gel (G-group), Type I collagen fibers (F-group), Type I collagen fibers coated with laminin (L-group) or the YIGSR sequence (Y-group) were packed into silicone tubes, 15 mm long, and transplanted to the sciatic nerves of Wistar rats. Empty silicone tubes were used as the control. The animals were sacrificed 8 weeks after transplantation. Bridging of the nerve was confirmed in the F-(7/12), Y-(7/10) and L-group (6/10), but no bridging was observed in any of the animals of the G- and control group. Nerve regeneration among the space of collagen fibers was observed, and it was suggested that fibroblasts infiltrated the gap in the substance of the degenerated collagen fibers were followed by Schwann cells on the basis of immunocytochemistry. The number of myelinated axons per regenerated tissue in the tube (density), and total area of myelinated axons per measured regenerated tissue in the tube (% axon area) in each the L- and Y-group were significantly higher than that in the F-group (P 〈 0.05). These results suggest the possibility of obtaining adequate nerve regeneration with new artificial materials only. © 1999 Kluwer Academic Publishers

Notes: Abstract To analyze the effects of stress-shielding on graft maturation after the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction, autogenous ACL reconstruction using Achilles tendon was performed in rabbits. Two-end fixation with a ligament augmentation device (LAD), as a stress-shielding model (SS group), and pull-out fixation with Leeds-Keio artificial ligaments (L-K ligament), as a non-stress-shielding model (non-SS group), were investigated. Intact ACL was used as the control. Specimens were harvested 6 mon postoperatively, and the analysis was focused on collagen fibril maturation in the mid-substance and bone-anchoring pattern in the bone tunnel, under light and transmission electron microscopy. The density of collagen fibrils in the control was lower than that in both experimental groups (p〈0.01). The per cent collagen area in the control was higher than that in the SS (p〈0.01) and the non-SS group (p〈0.01). The per cent collagen area in the non-SS group was higher than that in the SS group (p〈0.05). At the ligament-bone interface, intracellular calcification of the degenerated chondrocytes occurred in the non-SS group, while in the SS group hydroxyapatite deposits were observed only in the extracellular matrix. These results show unfavorable influence of stress-shielding on graft maturation not only in the mid-substance but also at the ligament-bone junction. © 1999 Kluwer Academic Publishers

Notes: Abstract The fatty acid composition of human subcutaneous fat obtained at a hospital in the north of Japan, was determined by means of gas chromatography. In the fat of chest and abdominal walls percentages of saturated fatty acids were higher and those of mono-unsaturated ones were less in comparison with respective values in the fat of forearm and leg. The unsaturation of the fat of extremities was more pronounced in the winter than in the summer, while no seasonal variations were observed in the fatty acid composition of the fat of trunk.

Notes: Summary Cholecystokinin-octapeptide (CCK-8) was shown to cause hypothermia after intracerebroventricular administration in the rat, and the hypothermic effect of CCK-8 was antagonized by simultaneous injection of TRH.

Notes: Summary In vagotomized rats, 2 weeks after surgery, the amplitude of the circadian rhythm of plasma corticosterone was extremely low, indicating that gastrointestinal activity may be in part involved in the hypothalamo-hypophyseal circadian rhythmicity.

Notes: Abstract  β-Amylase deficiency in various cultivars of rice was examined at the molecular level. Using an antibody against β-amylase purified from germinating seeds of rice, we were able to demonstrate the expression and organization of the β-amylase gene in normal and deficient cultivars. Although β-amylase is a starch-hydrolyzing enzyme, as is α-amylase, the β-amylase protein/gene is expressed differently from the α-amylase protein/gene; i.e. (1) β-amylase is synthesized only in aleurone cells, (2) the enzyme production in the embryo-less half-seeds is not under hormonal control. We identified some cultivars of rice that are deficient for β-amylase activity. We present new evidence that synthesis is blocked at the level of mRNA synthesis in the deficient cultivars. The usefulness of β-amylase as a crop trait is also discussed.

Notes: Abstract The inhibitory effect of fluvastatin sodium (fluvastatin), a new type of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl (HMG) coenzyme A inhibitor, on de novo cholesterol synthesis was investigated and compared with that of pravastatin. Fluvastatin at a concentration of 12.5 mg/kg inhibited sterol synthesis ex vivo from [14C]acetate in rat liver and ileum by 97–99% with respect to the control, while the inhibition in kidney was 55%. The inhibition by fluvastatin in the liver and ileum persisted for approximately 9 h after administration. Significant differences between fluvastatin also had an inhibitory effect on cholesterol synthesis in vivo in various tissues of rats given [14C]acetate intraperitoneally. Sterol synthesis in the liver, ileum and kidney was inhibited by over 95% 3 h after administration of 6.25 mg/kg of fluvastatin. Significant differences between fluvastatin and pravastatin were found in the liver and ileum. Fluvastatin was more potent than pravastatin in inhibiting both ex vivo and in vivo sterol synthesis in the ileum (but not in kidney) and liver.

Notes: Abstract. An incomplete correlation is discovered between the phase conjugate reflectivity in Feinberg’s Cat conjugator generating a train of regular pulses with the cw incident pump wave and inhibited specular reflectivity from the sample. The frequency chirp within every spike of conjugate wave is shown to affect the efficiency of the secondary phase conjugator generating auxiliary waves in the direction of Fresnel reflection of the incident wave.
