    Notes: The use of Very High Frequency measurements applied to the detection of the variation in dielectric constant as a precursor to earthquakes is examined. It is concluded that such a technique is feasible and that the installation of source and sensor in separate deep boreholes provides a suitable environment for this type of study. The boreholes could also be used for a considerable range of other types of instrumentation.

    Notes: Summary Sixty families from two tomato triple test crosses (S120 x EC61747 and EC31513 x ‘Tusa Ruby’) were raised in complete randomized blocks in two replications and two environments (two fertilizer levels). Jinks and Perkins' (1970) analysis was used to detect and estimate the additive, dominance and epistatic components of genetic variation for flowering time, maturity period, number of branches per plant, final height, shape index of fruit, locule number, number of fruits per plant, yield per plant and weight per fruit. The j & 1 type epistasis was more important than the i type epistasis in the first cross, while in the second cross the two components of epistasis played almost equal roles in the control of characters studied. Both the D (additive) and H (dominance) components were significant for most of the characters in both crosses and in both the environments. The D component was relatively more important than the H component in the first cross, while the situation was just the reverse in the second cross. Dominance was directional in 8 out of 36 cases. Ambidirectional dominance was observed in 27 cases. A real absence of dominance was observed in one case only.

    Notes: Summary ‘Chris’ wheat possessed genes Sr5, Sr7a, Sr8a, Sr9g and Sr12. ‘W3746’, derived from the cross ‘Chris’/‘Baart’, possessed Sr7a and Sr12. The response conferred by Sr7a was influenced by the genetic background. Although Sr7a or Sr12 alone conferred no observable resistance upon adult plants, the adult resistances of ‘Chris’ and ‘W3746’ to predominant pathotypes appeared to be associated with the interaction of Sr7a and Sr12, or genes at closely linked loci.

    Notes: Abstract The shear stability of drag reducing polymer-polymer and polymer-fibre mixtures has been studied at a Reynolds number of 14,000 using a turbulent flow rheometer. The ratio of the drag reduction at a particular pass number to the initial drag reduction has been determined for the mixtures at various pass numbers and compositions in order to determine the effect of composition on the shear stability of the mixtures. It has been found in both cases that when there is a drastic difference in the shear stabilities of the constituents of the mixtures, the incorporation of a small amount of the less shear stable drag reducing agent reduces the shear stability drastically. On the other hand, when the shear stability of the constituents are of the same order, there is only a proportional change in the shear stability of the mixtures on addition of one component to the other. A correlation between the decay coefficient of the mixture (R M ), the decay coefficients of the constituents (R 1 andR 2 ) and the weight fractions of the mixture components (W 1 andW 2) is suggested. An efficacious method for preparing asbestos fibre stock suspensions is also described.

    Notes: Abstract The rheological and turbulent drag reducing characteristics of commercial and purified xanthan gum solutions of concentrations 50–500 ppm have been studied with and without addition of 100 ppm NaCl. The purification by soxlet extraction of xanthan gum using 95% ethanol is effective in removing low-molecular-weight impurities from xanthan. The increased content of higher molecular-weight xanthan in purified xanthan is evident from rheological and drag reduction behavior. The addition of 100 ppm salt to dilute solutions introduces semi-flexibility in xanthan gum solution without occurrence of self-association. The change in molecular behavior in the presence of salt is evident from rheological normal-stress and turbulent drag reduction behaviors.

    Notes: Abstract Interpenetrating networks are the most recent development in polymeric blend materials. Due to the crosslinking of both the continuous and dispersed phases, a high degree of molecular mixing is achieved in these materials. Notwith-standing that poly(methyl methacrylate)-polyurethane (PMMA-PUR) interpene-trating and semi-interpenetrating networks have been extensively investigated by Meyer et al., ultrasonic relaxation technique has been applied here for the first time. These materials were found to be highly ultrasound absorbing. It is observed that ultrasonic absorption has a peak at a particular composition of PMMA-PUR interpenetrating network. The absorption coefficient α increases with frequencyf. The absorption is of relaxational nature and is not due to the scattering of ultrasonic waves by the domains of the dispersed phase. At every composition of the interpenetrating network, theα/f 2 vs.f curve indicates the presence of a relaxation frequency below 2 MHz and that the absorption increases with the temperature at some compositions which indicates the presence of thermal relaxation. An attempt is made to relate the absorption with the relaxation of pendent groups of polyurethane in the continuous phase.

    Notes: Abstract The turbulent drag reduction caused by polymer-polymer and polymerfibre mixtures has been measured in recirculatory flow of water. Shear stability studies have also been made on a number of drag reducing polymers, asbestos fibres and their mixtures in recirculatory turbulent flow of water. Reynolds numbers ranged from 20,000 to 57,000. Both positive and negative deviations from linear additive behaviour have been observed in drag reduction caused by the polymer-polymer mixtures depending upon their compositions, flow rate and polymer species in the mixture. The drag reduction by the mixtures has been predicted by using simple mixture rule equations including an interaction parameter. This interaction parameter is believed to depend upon the polymer interaction in the polymer mixture. The random coil size and rigidity of the polymer molecules appear to be responsible for the synergism observed in the drag reduction caused by the mixture. In general, mixtures having larger solvation number seem to give positive synergism. Synergism in drag reduction by the polymer-fibre mixtures has also been observed. The simple mixture law equation with interaction parameter is also applicable in predicting the drag reduction by the mixtures as above. The random coil size of the polymer molecules and the rigidity of the polymer-fibre system appear to be responsible for the synergism observed in drag reduction. In the shearstability studies it has been observed that the decrement in drag reduction (DR) is higher than the the decrement in absolute viscosity in most cases. Carboxymethyl cellulose is found to be the most shear stable polymer followed by guar gum, xanthan gum and polyacrylamide. The mixtures exhibiting synergism in causing drag reduction are found to be more shear stable.

    Notes: Abstract The influence of micro-environment on the growth and yield of cowpea, castor and sorghum was investigated in a 10 m wide alley cropping system. The alleys were formed by Leucaena hedgerows pruned for both fodder and pole production. Below-ground interaction was examined by installing a polythene root barrier between the root systems of crops and Leucaena and by measurements of both soil moisture and root growth. Microclimate measurements included light, wind speed, humidity and temperature. Growth and yield of crops declined from 150 to 30% of sole crop as the distance from the hedgerows decreased from 5 to 0.3 m. The presence of the root barrier had a marked effect on crop growth and completely eliminated any reduction in crop yield, although shading by the hedgerows reached 30 to 85% of full sunlight. There was some modification of the microclimate in the alleys but the changes were not great enough to significantly influence crop yield. The substantial increase in crop yield in the middle of the alleys was explained by the residual effect of a previous hedgerow, removed 12 months previously, on probably the infiltration rate and nutrient status of the soil. These results clearly showed that alley cropping in the semi-arid tropics induces competition for moisture between the trees and crops which may severely reduce crop yield.
