Description: Magnetotelluric soundings were carried out at 45 stations along a north-south profile near western coast of India. The magnetotelluric results in the E- and H-polarizatjons showed a significant difference in behaviour. Detailed two-dimensional modelling was carried out to study the effect of the western and eastern coasts of India on magnetotelluric measurements. The effect of the coast on magnetotelluric measurements was seen near the coa"t in both the polarizations. This effect was maximum in the vicinity of the coast in broad frequency range. It is suggested that magnetotelluric measurements in the coastal region of India should be carried out in the E-polarization for a reliable vertical resistivity profile.

Notes: The use of Very High Frequency measurements applied to the detection of the variation in dielectric constant as a precursor to earthquakes is examined. It is concluded that such a technique is feasible and that the installation of source and sensor in separate deep boreholes provides a suitable environment for this type of study. The boreholes could also be used for a considerable range of other types of instrumentation.

Notes: Abstract An analytical study is performed to examine the heat transfer characteristics on the flow of a viscous, incompressible rarefied gas in a parallel plate channel under the action of transverse magnetic field when (i) suction velocity normal to the plate is constant, (ii) the second plate oscillates in time about a constant non-zero mean, (iii) fluid is subjected to a constant heat source of absorption type. Apprximate solutions for velocity, temperature, phase, and amplitude of skin-friction and rate of heat transfer are evaluated. Mean temperature profiles, phase and amplitude of rate of heat transfer at both plates are discussed graphically followed by a quantitative discussion. Mean rate of heat transfer is tabulated in Table I.

Notes: Summary ‘Chris’ wheat possessed genes Sr5, Sr7a, Sr8a, Sr9g and Sr12. ‘W3746’, derived from the cross ‘Chris’/‘Baart’, possessed Sr7a and Sr12. The response conferred by Sr7a was influenced by the genetic background. Although Sr7a or Sr12 alone conferred no observable resistance upon adult plants, the adult resistances of ‘Chris’ and ‘W3746’ to predominant pathotypes appeared to be associated with the interaction of Sr7a and Sr12, or genes at closely linked loci.

Notes: Summary Sixty families from two tomato triple test crosses (S120 x EC61747 and EC31513 x ‘Tusa Ruby’) were raised in complete randomized blocks in two replications and two environments (two fertilizer levels). Jinks and Perkins' (1970) analysis was used to detect and estimate the additive, dominance and epistatic components of genetic variation for flowering time, maturity period, number of branches per plant, final height, shape index of fruit, locule number, number of fruits per plant, yield per plant and weight per fruit. The j & 1 type epistasis was more important than the i type epistasis in the first cross, while in the second cross the two components of epistasis played almost equal roles in the control of characters studied. Both the D (additive) and H (dominance) components were significant for most of the characters in both crosses and in both the environments. The D component was relatively more important than the H component in the first cross, while the situation was just the reverse in the second cross. Dominance was directional in 8 out of 36 cases. Ambidirectional dominance was observed in 27 cases. A real absence of dominance was observed in one case only.

Notes: Summary Potato spindle tuber viroid (PSTV) and potato virus Y (PVY) were isolated from plants of cultivar Kennebec with severe necrotic symptoms in the field. In the greenhouse, severe necrotic symptoms were reproduced only when potato plants were infected either simultaneously with PSTV+PVY, or with PSTV prior to PVY infection. Thirteen additional potato cultivars were tested in the greenhouse for this synergistic reaction and eight developed necrotic responses similar to cv. Kennebec. PVY concentration was significantly higher in doubly infected plants, compared with those infected with PVY alone.

Notes: Summary Using a modified procedure of Return-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (R-PAGE) mild strains of potato spindle tuber viroid (M-PSTV) were detected reliably from dormant tubers. The sensitivity of R-PAGE detection of M-PSTV was equivalent to that of nucleic acid hybridization. Both methods detected M-PSTV when infected tissue was mixed with healthy tissue in a ratio of 1 to 100. When extracted nucleic acid was diluted with buffer, R-PAGE detected PSTV at a dilution of 1:256 and nucleic hybridization only up to 1:64 PSTV was readily detected from 18 potato cultivars. In addition, mild, ‘intermediate’ and severe strains were separated by R-PAGE, on the basis of their mobility on the electrophorogram.

Notes: Abstract A new inorganic ion exchanger, zirconium hexacyanoferrate(III) prepared by adding potassium hexacyanoferrate(III) to zirconium oxychloride at 80°C has been found to be stable in acids and salt solutions. Distribution coefficient values determined for various metal ions show that the exchanger has a high affinity for bismuth. Binary separations of Bi(III) from a number of other metal ions at different concentrations were achieved on the column of the exchanger. Thus the exchanger has been found useful for the separation of bismuth from a large number of metals.

Notes: Summary Seven genes, viz. Sr5, Sr6, Sr7a, Sr8a, Sr9b, Sr12 and Sr17 were associated with seedling resistance to Puccinia graminis tritici in Kenya Plume wheat. The predominant field cultures were avirulent on seedlings with Sr7a, but possessed virulence for the other six genes. However, Sr7a did not confer adult-plant resistance when present on its own. Adult-plant resistance was attributed to Sr2 and possibly also to the interaction of Sr7a and Sr12. Two genes, Lr13 and Lr14a, were identified in seedling tests with various cultures of Puccinia recondita tritici. Lr13 conferred adult-plant resistance to the predominant field strains. Genetic recombination between Lr13 and Sr9b was estimated at 17.6±3.1%.

Notes: Abstract Seven species ofAzolla (A. caroliniana, A. microphylla, A. nilotica, A. filiculoides, A. mexicana, A. rubra, A. pinnata the last from both Malaysia and India) grown in pots of flooded soil were subjected to three different treatments with respect to P: none, single application, split application. The experiments were carried out under greenhouse conditions. Heterocyst frequency inAnabaena azollae and acetylene reducing activity (ARA) were studied in successiveAzolla leaves. Both variables increased from the first leaf (shoot apex) to the last one (before branch) in all species in the presence or absence of P. However, heterocyst frequency, ARA andAzolla biomass were all less in the treatment lacking P. Heterocyst frequency inA. azollae, ARA and biomass ofAzolla were higher when P was applied in split doses than in the other treatments.Azolla plants exhibited more ARA than the isolated leaves.
