Notes: Abstract An analysis is given of phase-reversal electrode structures used for phase matching in travelling-wave integrated-optic phase modulators. Both modulus and argument of the phase shift are obtained; both are required for applications involving broadband excitation. Periodic and non-periodic lossy structures are treated and the advantage of non-periodic structures for wide-band operation is demonstrated. Optimum structure arrangements and upper bounds to phase shift and figure of merit are derived.

Notes: Summary Variation of DA/DAPI intensity in the Yq12 band was observed in five amniotic cell specimens and one blood specimen from the father of one fetus. Three distinct classes of Yq heterochromatin were identified by distamycin A (DA) treatment of the cell cultures and various staining techniques. The heterochromatin in the Yq11.23 sub-band does not under-condense when exposed to DA, and shows pale fluorescence with quinacrine staining, positive C-banding, and bright fluorescence with DA/DAPI technique. This class of heterochromatin was consistently observed in all specimens studied. The other two classes of heterochromatin are in the Yq12 band. Both show undercondensation when exposed to DA, quinacrine-bright fluorescence, and positive C-banding; howover, one class of heterochromatin shows DA/DAPI-bright fluorescence and the other shows pale fluorescence. The size and banding intensity of the two classes of heterochromatin in Yq12 are variable. These results provide cytological evidence of heterogeneity within the Y heterochromatin region containing AT-rich DNA.

Notes: Summary The heat and force produced in tetanic contraction of single fibres from anterior tibialis muscle of the frogRana temporaria have been observed at measured temperatures close to 1 and 10° C. Heat was measured using a Hill-Downing type thermopile. In control experiments with a resistor of known heat capacity comparable to a single muscle fibre, it was found that Peltier and Joule heating produced identical thermopile outputs. The Peltier method was used to introduce a known amount of heat into the system in each experiment with a muscle fibre. From the response to this heating the heat capacity of each preparation was obtained and used to calculate the absolute amount of heat production from the thermopile output. The heat produced during tetanic contraction (H) could be described by Aubert's equation [H=H a (1−e t/τ)+h b t]. In some fibres there was no labile heat (Ha), whereas in others it was clearly present. The stable heat rate (h b ) was strongly temperature dependent (Q 10 = 4.06). At 0° C the stable heat rate (normalized by dry weight) in the single fibres was significantly greater than that in whole anterior tibialis muscle.

Description: As a result of delays in the Space Shuttle program and a re-evaluation of safety concerns which resulted in cancellation of the Shuttle Centaur Upper Stage program, the Galileo mission to Jupiter has undergone a substantial redesign effort. Use of the Inertial Upper Stage (IUS) for injection has necessitated a complicated Venus-Earth-Earth gravity assist trajectory in order to reach Jupiter. One flyby of Venus and two flybys of Earth are required to compensate for the lower injection energy available from the IUS. As the spacecraft was not originally designed for the environment within 1 AU of the Sun, modifications to the spacecraft and operating procedures have been developed. This paper describes some of these changes and how they have affected the design and implementation of trajectory correction maneuvers on the Earth-Venus leg of the mission. A strategy of biasing the IUS target at injection to control the statistical velocity distribution of a subsequent trajectory correction maneuver is discussed.
