    Notes: Summary Head size and shape of reptiles may reflect selection for multiple uses. For example, sexual selection for large head size may enhance feeding efficiency. In contrast, morphological characteristics of the heads of fossorial reptiles suggests that fossoriality may have evolved at the expense of reduced effectiveness in feeding. Our research focused on the question: Does a fossorial lizard feed less effectively than a non-fossorial lizard? To answer this question, we measured the time, number of bites, and oxygen consumption by sand-swimming (Chalcides ocellatus) and epigeal (Eumeces inexpectatus) skinks feeding on crickets. These lizard species were similar in mass, but different in body form: Chalcides had longer bodies and smaller heads than Eumeces. For lizards of the same mass, Chalcides were unable to eat prey as large as those eaten by Eumeces, Chalcides took longer to eat prey of the same size than did Eumeces, and the aerobic energy cost of eating crickets of the same relative size (cricket mass/lizard mass) tended to be greater for Chalcides than for Eumeces. The ecologically relevant costs of feeding appear to be the upper limit to the size of prey and the time of feeding. Both costs would restrict the energy intake per unit time of Chalcides. Moreover, given the same energy requirements and prey community, Chalcides would have to feed more often and would take longer to feed than would Eumeces. Both factors would increase the exposure of Chalcides to predators relative to that of Eumeces. To reduce the risk of predation, Chalcides would have to reduce energy intake or fulfill its energy requirements with relatively small prey, or both. These conclusions are potentially confounded in two ways. The first is that male Eumeces have relatively large heads as a result of sexual selection. Thus, the differences we observed between Chalcides and Eumeces (most of our specimens were males) could have been the result of reduced costs of feeding for Eumeces due to sexual selection and not the result of enhanced costs of feeding for Chalcides. A more likely explanation is that differences in the costs of feeding observed between these species reflect adaptations for fossoriality by Chalcides and sexual selection on Eumeces. Our results may also be confounded because we compared laboratory reared Chalcides with field captured Eumeces. Any deterimental effects of captivity on the vigor of Chalcides would increase their costs of feeding relative to those of Eumeces. Although short-term captivity is not associated with changes in the metabolic capcity of lizards, effects of long-term captivitiy are unknown.

    Description: Purified preparations of recombinant human granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), granulocyte CSF (G-CSF), and interleukin 3 (IL-3 or multi-CSF) alone and in combination, have been compared for their stimulatory effects on human granulocyte-macrophage colony forming cells (GM-CFC). In cultures of unseparated normal human bone marrow, the combinations of G-CSF plus IL-3 and GM-CSF plus IL-3 stimulated additive numbers of GM colonies, while GM-CSF plus G-CSF stimulated greater than additive numbers of GM colonies, compared with the sum of the colony formation obtained with each factor alone. Cultures of unseparated bone marrow, harvested from patients four to six days after administration of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), resulted in additive GM colony formation with GM-CSF plus G-CSF, GM-CSF plus IL-3, and G-CSF plus IL-3. In order to address the possibility of secondary factor involvement in the synergistic interaction of GM-CSF and G-CSF, CD33+/CD34+ colony forming cells were separated from normal and post FU marrow by two color fluorescence activated cell sorting. In cultures of CD33+/CD34+ cells the combination of GM-CSF plus G-CSF stimulated a synergistic increase in GM colonies while GM-CSF plus IL-3 stimulated additive numbers of colonies. These results suggest that GM-CSF, G-CSF, and IL-3 stimulate distinct populations of GM-CFC. Furthermore GM-CSF and G-CSF interact synergistically and this action is a direct effect on progenitor cells not stimulated by GM-CSF or G-CSF alone.

    Description: The Whittier Narrows earthquake of October 1, 1987 was the most significant seismic event to occur in southern California since the San Fernando earthquake of February 1971. As such, the 5.9 magnitude temblor provided a basis for evaluating the level of preparedness in at least a portion of the Los Angeles metropolitan region. The Whittier Narrows event provides a hint of the progress that has been made in local, state and private sector preparedness in the last six years as well as suggesting areas that need additional effort.

    Description: Previous studies have shown that a decrease in red cell mass occurs in astronauts, and some studies indicate a leukocytosis occurs. A life science module housing young and mature rats was flown on shuttle mission Spacelab 3 (SL-3), and the results of hematology studies of flight and control rats are presented. Statistically significant increases in the hematocrit, red blood cell counts, and hemoglobin determinations, together with a mild neutrophilia and lymphopenia, were found in flight animals. No significant changes were found in bone marrow and spleen cell differentials or erythropoietin determinations. Clonal assays demonstrated an increased erythroid colony formation of flight animal bone marrow cells at erythropoietin doses of 0.02 and 1.0 U/ml but not 0.20 U/ml. These results agree with some but vary from other previously published studies. Erythropoietin assays and clonal studies were performed for the first time.

    Description: Interrupted growth experiments on Hg(0.8)Cd(0.2)Se alloys were performed in an attempt to estimate the actual internal temperature gradient in the melt during directional solidification. The results have been analyzed in terms of a theoretical model which assumes an axial composition profile characteristic of diffusion controlled solute redistribution during growth. A comparison of the calculated and measured values suggests a reduction in the applied (empty furnace) temperature gradient by about a factor of three. Values of the interface segregation coefficient (k) determined from the phase diagram, predict values of solute concentration build up in the solid during growth interruptions which are inconsistent with measured results. It appears that the k values used tend to underestimate the actual k values for higher alloy compositions and overestimate k for the lower alloy compositions.

    Description: Hematologic studies were performed on a group of large and small rats which were sacrificed after flying in life sciences shuttle engineering flight SL-3. The results are presented on flight (F) and control (C) 200 gm rats. The small flight animals demonstrated a significant increase in hematocrits, red blood cell counts, hemoglobins and peripheral blood percentages of neutrophils as well as a decrease in percentage of lymphocytes. Erythropoietin (Ep) determinations were similar for the two groups as were the bone marrow an spleen differential counts. In vitro cultures for erythroid colonies of bone marrow showed that in response to different doses of Ep, in all cases where differnces were statistically significant, the F rats had increased colony counts. The changes in red cell parameters could be caused by a decrease in plasma volume. However, no isotopic studies were possible on this flight and this lack points up the need for such studies to determine the red cell mass and plasma volume.

The influence of growth rate on both the longitudinal and radial compositional uniformity for the crystals was determined using density measurements and infrared transmission-edge mapping.
