The Reactions of Urea with Molybdenum Pentachloride and Tungsten Hexachloride. Crystal Structures of MoCl5 · POCl3 and [MoNCl3 · POCl3]4 · 2 CCl4Molybdenum pentachloride reacts with urea in the presence of POCl3 in a CCl4 suspension, forming the nitrido complex [MoNCl3 · POCl3]4 · 2 CCl4. The red needles lose CCl4 in vacuo, giving the well known [Moncl3 · Pocl3]4. Tungsten hexachloride reacts with urea in boiling CH2Cl2 under cleavage of HCl, forming green [Cl5W≡N—C(O)NH3], which according to the i.r. spectrum has a zwitterionic structure. MoCl5 · POCl3 and [Moncl3 · POCl3]4 · 2 CCl4 were characterized by X-ray structure determinations.MoCl5 · Pocl3: Space group Pnma, Z = 4. Lattice dimensions at 20°C: a = 1631.1; b = 788.7; c = 885.3 pm (1148 independent observed reflexions, R = 0.051). The compound is isotypic with the corresponding POCl3 adducts of Nbcl5 and ReCl5. Bond lengths: Mo—O 219 pm, P—O 146 pm; bond angle Mo—O—P 143.7°.[Moncl3 · Pocl3]4 · 2 CCl4: Space group P1, Z = 2. Lattice dimensions at -50°C: a = 1204.4; b = 1241.7; c = 1938.4 pm; α = 70.14°; β = 72.5°; γ = 83,84° (2971 independent observed reflexions, R = 0.066). The compound is isotypic with [WNCl3 · POCL3]4 · 2 POCl3. The structure consists of planar and almost square Mo4N4-eight-membered rings with alternating Mo-N bond lengths of 169.0, and 213.8 pm, respectively. The POCL3 molecules are coordinated trans to the MO ≡ N triple bonds with bond lengths Mo- 235.1 pm, P-O-P bond angle of 154°.
Notes:
Abstände: Mo—O 219 pm, P—O 146 pm, Bindungswinkel Mo—O—P 143,7°.[MoNCl3 · POCl3]4 · 2 CCl4: Raumgruppe P1, Z = 2. Gitterabmessungen bei -50°C: a = 1204,4; b = 1241,7; c = 1938,4 pm; α = 70,14°; β = 72,5°; γ = 83,84° (2971 unabhängige, beobachtete Reflexe, R = 6,6%).
