Notes: The properties of intrinsic optical bistability in nematic liquid crystals were studied. This kind of optical bistability is without resonant optical cavity and electric feedback. We find that the nematic ROTN-200 film can exhibit bistability when applying a constant ac electric field (≈560 kHz) that is greater than a tricritical voltage VTc=2.614 V. The bistable interval is measured and the hysteresis loop is characterized at each different voltage. The splay and bent elastic constants k11 and k33 are obtained to calculate the numerical result. It is found that the experimental results are in good agreement with theory. The experimental setup with which we can easily observe the bistable phenomena is illustrated. Under the consideration of the finite size of the laser beam, the thermal effect and finite beam size effect are discussed. In addition, some new interesting phenomena about the diffraction ring structure of nematic liquid crystal are reported.

Notes: Linear instability waves in supersonic shear layers are analyzed. Both viscous and inviscid disturbances are considered. The basic state is obtained by solving the compressible laminar boundary-layer equations or is specified by the hyperbolic tangent profile. The effects of the velocity ratio and temperature ratio are determined. The numerical results show that the maximum growth rate depends nonlinearly on the velocity ratio. The results also substantiate the convective Mach number as a compressibility parameter for mixing layers.

Notes: The generation of vertical Bloch lines (VBL's) at the head of a moving stripe domain with and without an in-plane field was studied. For an as-grown sample, the velocity saturation is independent of in-plane field direction and the same velocity as an implanted sample when the in-plane field direction is the same as the stray field in the implanted layer. When the in-plane field direction was reversed, the wall saturation velocity is higher. Overshoot starts when the wall velocity approaches the saturation velocity and increases with drive field as the stripe head becomes asymmetrically distorted. Eventually, the stripe will move at an angle. The presence and motion of VBL's was inferred from the shape of the stripe head during and at the end of the applied pulse field, the bending of the stripe, and the presence of overshoot. In the ion-implanted film, after the generation of a pair of VBL's on the stripe head, the positive (negative) VBL was pushed into the straight part of the stripe when the in-plane field direction is opposite (parallel) to the stray field direction in the implanted layer at the stripe head. In the as-grown film, which kind of VBL is pushed away seems random and independent of the in-plane field direction and amplitude.

Notes: The observation of optical and electric first-order Freedericksz transitions in a homeotropically aligned nematic liquid crystal film induced by electric and optical fields, respectively, is reported. The experimental results are in good agreement with theoretical predictions.

Notes: Optical field induced first-order electric Freedericksz transition and electric bistability in a homogeneously aligned nematic film is first observed. It is experimentally demonstrated that an applied optical field can transform the electric Freedericksz transition from second order to first order. The molecular reorientation as a function of electric field is then characterized by a hysteresis loop which exhibits the electric bistability. The results are in good agreement with theoretical predictions.

Notes: Application of moderate electric fields to ZnSe/(Zn,Mn)Se quantum wells yields distinct spectral shifts of the recombining exciton luminescence. This shows that confinement effects in this heterostructure are sufficient to increase the exciton ionization threshold. At high applied fields and low temperatures, injection of hot electrons from the n+GaAs/ZnSe heterojunction at our substrate/buffer layer excites yellow luminescence from internal transitions of the Mn ion in (Zn,Mn)Se layers.
