Description: The gp120 envelope glycoprotein of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which is expressed on the surface of many HIV-infected cells, binds to the cell surface molecule CD4. Soluble derivatives of recombinant CD4 (rCD4) that bind gp120 with high affinity are attractive vehicles for targeting a cytotoxic reagent to HIV-infected cells. Soluble rCD4 was conjugated to the active subunit of the toxin ricin. This conjugate killed HIV-infected H9 cells but was 1/1000 as toxic to uninfected H9 cells (which do not express gp120) and was not toxic to Daudi cells (which express major histocompatibility class II antigens, the putative natural ligand for cell surface CD4). Specific killing of infected cells can be blocked by rgp120, rCD4, or a monoclonal antibody to the gp120 binding site on CD4.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Till, M A -- Ghetie, V -- Gregory, T -- Patzer, E J -- Porter, J P -- Uhr, J W -- Capon, D J -- Vitetta, E S -- CA-09082/CA/NCI NIH HHS/ -- CA-28149/CA/NCI NIH HHS/ -- CA-41081/CA/NCI NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1988 Nov 25;242(4882):1166-8.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Department of Microbiology, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas 75235.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2847316" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

    Description: Coral reefs of north Jamaica, normally sheltered, were severely damaged by Hurricane Allen, the strongest Caribbean hurricane of this century. Immediate studies were made at Discovery Bay, where reef populations were already known in some detail. Data are presented to show how damage varied with the position and orientation of the substraturn and with the shape, size, and mechanical properties of exposed organisms. Data collected over succeeding weeks showed striking differences in the ability of organisms to heal and survive.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Woodley, J D -- Chornesky, E A -- Clifford, P A -- Jackson, J B -- Kaufman, L S -- Knowlton, N -- Lang, J C -- Pearson, M P -- Porter, J W -- Rooney, M C -- Rylaarsdam, K W -- Tunnicliffe, V J -- Wahle, C M -- Wulff, J L -- Curtis, A S -- Dallmeyer, M D -- Jupp, B P -- Koehl, M A -- Neigel, J -- Sides, E M -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1981 Nov 13;214(4522):749-55.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17744383" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Monkeys in which nerves innervating the flexor muscles of the forearm and hand (the ulnar or the median nerve) had been surgically cross-united with the nerve innervating the extensor muscles (the radial nerve), and vice versa, showed excellent (ulnar-radial crosses) to moderate (median-radial crosses) control of movement performance after regeneration. Antagonistic movement responses were seen occasionally, but these were corrected almost immediately. Stimulation of the crossed nerves showed that they had innervated the antagonistic muscle groups. The results reveal the capacity of the primate central nervous system to adapt to gross disturbances imposed on the execution of movements by changes in peripheral innervation.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Brinkman, C -- Porter, R -- Norman, J -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1983 Apr 22;220(4595):438-40.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6836289" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: The saccadic system accurately compensates for perturbations of eye position produced by microstimulation of the superior colliculus. This requires that information about the stimulation-induced change in eye position be provided by an extraretinal source--either proprioceptive endings in extraocular muscles or a centrally generated corollary discharge. It is shown that compensation remains intact after elimination of extraocular muscle proprioception, demonstrating that corollary discharge provides accurate eye position information.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Guthrie, B L -- Porter, J D -- Sparks, D L -- F32 EY05651/EY/NEI NIH HHS/ -- P30 EY03039/EY/NEI NIH HHS/ -- R01 EY01189/EY/NEI NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1983 Sep 16;221(4616):1193-5.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6612334" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Surface chemistry of both particles and animals is important in filter feeding at low Reynolds number. Daphnia magna, fed mixtures of three sizes of polystyrene particles, retained particles that were smaller than the mesh size of the animals (1.0 micrometer) at greater efficiencies than predicted by a sieving model. Retention efficiency of the smallest particles (0.5 micrometer) was increased when negative surface charge on the particles was neutralized, and retention was decreased when a nonionic surfactant was, added to reduce wettability.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Gerritsen, J -- Porter, K G -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1982 Jun 11;216(4551):1225-7.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17830583" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉
