    Notes: Summary In this paper we consider product formulas of interpolatory type for the two-dimensional Cauchy principal value integral: $$I(f;\eta _1 ,\eta _2 ) = \int\limits_{ - 1}^1 {\int\limits_{ - 1}^1 \omega (x,y)\frac{{f(x,y)}}{{(x - \eta _1 )(y - \eta _2 )}}dxdy} $$ where: η1, η2∈(−1,1), ω(x,y)=ω1(x)·ω2(y), and ω1(x) and ω2(x) are two absolutely integrable weight functions. The integral is approximated by $$F_{n,m} (f;\eta _1 ,\eta _2 ) = \sum\limits_{i = 0}^n {\sum\limits_{j = 0}^m {A_i^{(1)} (\eta _1 )A_j^{(2)} (\eta _2 )} f(x_i ,y_i )}$$ where the nodes {x i } and {y j } are the zeros of the Chebyshev polynomials of the first kind, commonly named “classical” abscissas, or the Clenshaw points, often called “practical” abscissas. We present convergence results for these rules.

Notes: Summary In this paper we consider the approximate evaluation of $$\int\limits_a^b {K(x)f(x)dx} $$ , whereK(x) is a fixed Lebesgue integrable function, by product formulas of the form $$\sum\limits_{i = 0}^n {w_i f(x_i )} $$ based on cubic spline interpolation of the functionf. Generally, whenever it is possible, product quadratures incorporate the bad behaviour of the integrand in the kernelK. Here, however, we allowf to have a finite number of jump discontinuities in [a, b]. Convergence results are established and some numerical applications are given for a logarithmic singularity structure in the kernel.

Notes: Abstract The mechanism of antifungal activity of lactoferrin (Lf) and ovotransferrin (OTR) towards Candida albicans and Candida krusei was studied. In low iron-content medium, in minimal medium supplemented by 2,2′-dipyridyl, and in a medium in which Lf or OTR were separated from the culture by a dialysis membrane, the growth of C. albicans and C. krusei was proportional to the endogenous iron. Differences were observed when Lf or OTR was in contact with the fungal cells: C. albicans was inhibited, whereas C. krusei was not. Direct fluorescence indicated binding of Lf and OTR only on C. albicans surfaces, and suggested that antifungal activity is not simply related to iron deprivation, but involves interaction of the protein with the fungal surface.

Notes: [Auszug] To THE inexperienced, a result of more than six figures printed on computer paper often assumes the status of an absolute truth. The judicious use of Enzfitter should provide such people, and others, with a more balanced view of the use of computers and statistics in the evaluation of experimental ...

Notes: Abstract Six silicic eruptive cycles have been recognized in the last 50 ka at Pantelleria. The products of each cycle exhibit a compositional variation from pantellerite to less peralkaline rhyolite or to trachyte. The relationships between the range of chemical variation, the erupted volume and the time of eruptions, allow us to estimate an average differentiation rate of 5% crystal fractionation per 1000 years and a constant long-term rate of magma discharge of 0.1 km3 per 1000 years. Pressure increase in the magma chamber caused by the addition of new magma, accumulation of highly-differentiated, volatile-rich magma in the roof zone and a concomitant build-up of a vapour phase, is postulated as a possible triggering mechanism for eruptions.

Notes: Abstract Wet deposition due to radiation fog is examined in this paper. The area where the reported measurements were performed, the Po Valley, northern Italy, is characterized by both a high fog occurrence during the fall-winter months and fog water solutions of high ionic concentration and acidity. Estimated wet deposition for NH 4 + , NO inf3 sup- and SO inf4 sup2- ions due to fog droplet settling to the ground accounts for 13.2, 12.1 and 5.3 percent with respect to bulk precipitations over the same period: January–March and October–December (fog season). Fog deposition rates show that this process can be an important pathway of trace gases and particles loss from the air. First indicative results of fog removal efficiency with respect to air particulate matter are presented. Dry deposition parameters should be taken into account in evaluating the potential effect of fog droplet deposition on vegetation.

Notes: Abstract The inhibiting activity of ovotransferrin was tested towards different species belonging to genus Candida. Of one hundred strains tested, only C. krusei showed a noticeable resistance, while the other species appeared to be more sensitive than bacteria to the action of ovotransferrin. The influence of anions, such as bicarbonate and citrate, on the inhibiting activity of ovotransferrin was also investigated. Moreover it was observed that iron saturated ovotransferrin retained its activity, thus suggesting an interaction between the protein and Candida cells.

Notes: Abstract Neomysis mercedis (Holmes) has a diel vertical migration pattern that interacts with two-layered estuarine flow and a turbid entrapment zone to keep the population from being swept out of the upper Sacramento-San Joaquin Estuary. In the entrapment zone mysids are found near surface on all night tides but are present at that level during day only on flood tides. In the clearer water downstream from the entrapment zone mysids are not found near surface during day. In both locations a higher percentage of juveniles than adults are near surface. Individuals swept downstream from the entrapment zone in the seaward moving surface layer are apparently transported back upstream via the bottom density current. Thus, the population circulates both vertically and longitudinally but there is no net seaward movement except in response to changes in location of the entrapment zone. Due to their greater near surface abundance on flood tides which move them upstream, neonates are less abundant than adults seaward of the entrapment zone.
