Notes: Abstract Run-off transcription assays were used to demonstrate that both the ultraviolet (UV)-B and blue-light receptors control transcription rates for chalcone-synthase mRNA in the course of light-induced flavonoid synthesis in parsley (Petroselinum crispum Miller (A.W. Hill)) cell-suspension cultures. Blue and red light alone, presumably acting via a blue-light receptor and active phytochrome (far-red absorbing form) respectively, can induce accumulation of chalcone-synthase mRNA. The extent of the response is however considerably smaller than that obtained when these wavebands are applied in combination with UV light. A preirradiation with blue light strongly increases the response to a subsequent UV pulse and this modulating effect of blue light is stable for at least 20 h. The modulating effect is abolished by a UV induction but can be reestablished by a second irradiation with blue light.

Notes: Abstract We estimate the higher order QED corrections to the QED Compton events at HERA employing the leading logarithmic approximation to all orders in α. The Compton events are events of the typee+p→e′+γ+ Hadrons, wheree′ and γ have nearly balancedp T .

Notes: Abstract We describe how to apply the unitary approximation to high energy scattering processes which involve the radiation of arbitrarily many photons. We compare our results to calculations of inclusive quantities using leading log resummation techniques well known from QCD. In contrast to the latter method the unitary approximation is also appropriate for differential cross sections. The Monte Carlo implementation of the method is discussed and detailed results are given for the case of radiative Bhabha scattering.

Notes: Abstract The Relativistic Random Phase Approximation for a meson-nucleon field theory with vector mesons is cast into an exactly soluble model. This allows to derive bounds on their couplings from consistency conditions without malting use of perturbative expansions. We find that the coupling used to fit low energy properties requires a strong suppression ofN−¯N-states by suitable cut offs.

Notes: Abstract In the present work the measurement and description of the second normal stress difference in pure viscoelastic fluids and in suspensions of these fluids is discussed. The various measurement methods implemented to date are described briefly. Following this, the cone-and-plate distance method, which was introduced by Jackson and Kaye, is discussed. The analysis method of this experimentally relative simply implemented technique is modified. This is done by assuming that the ratio ψ* of the second normal stress difference to the first is independent of shear rate. This permits the precalculation of the measured function with ψ* as a curve parameter. The best possible fit of the measurement leads to the determination of ψ*. This method is used to measure the normal stress ratio of pure polyisobutene and of a 34.5% suspension of the same fluid. The result for the pure fluid matches literature values; ψ* of the suspension was found to have negative sign, as for the pure fluid, but to be of much greater magnitude.

Notes: Abstract We investigate a simple meson-nucleon field theory in relativistic random phase approximation. To avoid perturbative expansions, the relativistic random phase approximation is cast into an exactly soluble model invented by Zachariasen. To make the model well defined, it is necessary to cut off nucleon-antinucleon states with invariant mass 〉λ. This is achieved by introducing form factors in a consistent way. Still the elimination of unphysical ghost states implies a bound on the square of the coupling constant, which is discussed as a function of the cut off. We find that the coupling used to fit low energy properties requires a strong suppression ofN- $$\bar N$$ -states. These results do not depend on the renormalization scheme.

Notes: Abstract By means of a cone and plate rheometer the relaxation of the shear stress and the first normal stress difference in polymer liquids upon cessation of a constant shear rate were examined. The experiments were conducted mostly in a high shear rate region of relevance for the processing of these materials. The relaxation behavior at these shear rates can only be measured accurately under extremely precise specifications of the rheometer. To determine under which conditions the integral normal thrust is a convenient measure for the relaxing local first normal stress difference the radial distribution of the pressure in the shear gap was measured. The shape of relaxation of both the shear stress and the first normal stress difference could be closely approximated for the entire measured shear rate and time range by a two parameter statistical function. In the range of measured shear rates, one of the parameters, the standard deviationS, is equal for the shear and the normal stress, and is independent of the shear rate within the limit of experimental error. The second parameter, the mean relaxation timet′ 50,τ of the shear stress andt′ 50,σ of the first normal stress difference, can be calculated approximately from the viscosity function and only a single relaxation experiment.

Notes: Summary Fragments excised from front regions of thinspread Physarum plasmodia were used to examine a possible correlation between the periodical dynamic activity of such specimens and the spatial organization of actin fibrils. Under isotonic conditions, symmetrical contractions and relaxations of the entire fragment alternate with a period of 1–4 min, whereas under isometric conditions local contractions and relaxations occur simultaneously in different regions of the same specimen. Rapid fixation and phalloidin-staining at distinct stages of the contraction-relaxation cycle demonstrates the permanent existence of cytoplasmic actin fibrils under both isometric and isotonic conditions. During the transition from relaxation to contraction the fibrils shorten in length from 25.5 μm to 21.0 μm and increase in density from 1.2 fibrils/1000 μm2 to 2.3 fibrils/1000 μm2. The present results demonstrate that actin fibrils in Physarum plasmodia are not completely decomposed and reformed every contraction-relaxation cycle.
