Notes: Abstract  The target site of the antifungal compound LY214352 [8-chloro-4-(2-chloro-4-fluorophenoxy) quinoline] has been identified through a dual biochemical and molecular-genetics approach. In the molecular-genetics approach, a cosmid library was prepared from an Aspergillus nidulans mutant that was resistant to LY214352 because of a dominant mutation in a single gene. A single cosmid (6A6-6) that could transform an LY214352-sensitive strain of A. nidulans to LY214352-resistance was isolated from the library by sib-selection. Restriction fragments from cosmid 6A6-6 containing the functional resistance gene were identified by transformation, and sequenced. The LY214352-resistance gene coded for a protein of 520 amino acids that had a 34% identity and a 57% similarity in a 333 amino-acid overlap to E. coli dihydroorotate dehydrogenase (DHO-DH). The results of a series of biochemical mechanism-of-action studies initiated simultaneously with molecular-genetic experiments also suggested that DHO-DH was the target of LY214352. Assays measuring the inhibition of DHO-DH activity by LY214352 in a wild-type strain (I50=40 ng/ml) and a highly resistant mutant (I50〉100 μg/ml) conclusively demonstrated that DHO-DH is the target site of LY214352 in A. nidulans. Several mutations in the DHO-DH (pyrE) gene that resulted in resistance to LY214352 were identified.

Notes: In this paper the Poisson bracket algebra for the open massless relativistic string in the one-space- and one-time-dimensional case is considered. In order to characterize the orbit of the system the directrix function, i.e., the orbit of one of the endpoints of the string, is used. It turns out that the Poisson bracket algebra is of a very simple form in terms of the parameters of the directrix function. We use these results to construct action-angle variables for the general motion of the string. The variables are different for different Lorentz frames, with a continuous dependence. The action-angle variables of the center-of-mass frame and of the light-cone frames are of particular interest with respect to the simplicity of the Poincaré generators and the physical interpretation. For the light-cone frame variables the equivalence to a set of indistinguishable oscillators is shown, for which an excitation corresponds to an instantaneous momentum transfer to an endpoint of the string.

Notes: Abstract. While the hard phase of the strong interaction is well described by perturbative QCD, the soft hadronization phase is less understood. Benefiting from the high statistics from $e^+e^-$ experiments at the ${\rm Z}^0$ resonance, it is possible to impose strong two-jet cuts on the data without losing the statistical significance. In these events perturbative activity is suppressed and hadronization effects can be more prominent. We show that after proper event cuts a set of observables are sensitive to differences in the hadronization models. These observables can thus be important tools for a more detailed study of the hadronization mechanism.

Notes: Abstract. A thorough verification of the distinct differences in the properties of quark and gluon jets is considered as one of the most instructive tests of the basic ideas of QCD. In the real life experiments such a comparison appears to be quite a delicate task and various subtle issues require further theoretical efforts. In this paper we discuss in detail the possibility to extract the theoretically adequate information from the particle multiplicity patterns in three-jet events in $e^+e^-$ annihilation.

Notes: Abstract. We derive a partition function for the Lund fragmentation model and compare it with that of a classical gas. For a fixed rapidity “volume” this partition function corresponds to a multiplicity distribution which is very close to a binomial distribution. We compare our results with the multiplicity distributions obtained from the JETSET Monte Carlo for several scenarios. Firstly, for the fragmentation vertices of the Lund string. Secondly, for the final state particles both with and without decays.

Notes: Abstract We present a framework for deep inelastic scattering, with bound state properties in accordance with a QCD force field acting like a vortex line in a colour superconducting vacuum, which implies some simple coherence effects. Within this scheme one may describe the results of present energies very well, but one obtains an appreciable depletion of gluon radiation in the HERA energy regime.

Notes: Summary A bacterial gene encoding hygromycin phosphotransferase has been modified for expression in tobacco cells. The aphIV gene from Escherichia coli was inserted between the 5′ sequence of an octopine synthase gene and the 3′ sequence from a nopaline synthase gene. The new gene was incorporated between T-DNA border fragments in the broad-host-range vector pKT210 to form a micro-Ti plasmid. Agrobacterium tumefaciens containing this plasmid and a Ti plasmid as helper was used to incite crown gall tumors on aseptic tobacco plants. Samples of these galls could grow in the presence of hygromycin B, provided that the aph gene had been fused with the ocs gene to maintain the sense of the coding sequences. When the genes had been fused in the reverse ‘antisense’ orientation none of the gall samples could grow on hygromycin. Unlike wild-type galls the hygromycin-resistant tissue contained DNA sequences homologous to the aphIV gene. Thus the modified gene can be introduced into tobacco cells and confer on them the ability to grow in the presence of hygromycin B.
