    Beschreibung: A rather broad survey is reported of the Venus radar orbiter possibilities within the period 1983-1990. Minimum mission imaging requirements have been set by comparison with the improving capabilities of earth based radar systems and an examination of earth airborne radar imaging. This has led to a requirement for 80 percent coverage at a resolution of 100 m. A first main conclusion is that only the Shuttle-Centaur launch system would be capable of establishing a circular orbit under all possible launch conditions. Thus, orbit eccentricity has been introduced as a parameter throughout this presentation. An examination of typical radar designs has led to upper and lower limits on swath width of 100 and 50 km. A lower eccentricity of 0.2 was set by considering the current Viking propulsion system. An examination of solar perturbations indicates that orbit maintenance problems increase rapidly above an eccentricity of 0.5.

    Beschreibung: An evolutionary, gradual, and step-wise spacecraft systems technology development from those used on the Apollos and Skylab 1 to that required for the space station was considered. The four mission spacecraft were dry workshop versions of the Saturn 4-B stage, and each individually configured, outfitted and launched by INT-21 vehicles. These spacecraft were evaluated for crews of three, six and nine men and for mission lifetimes of one year. Two versions of the Apollo CSM, a three man and a four man crew, were considered as the logistic vehicle. The solar cell electrical power system of the first mission evolves into a light weight panel system supplemented by an operating isotope-Brayton system on the later missions. The open life support system of the first mission evolves to a system which recovers both water and oxygen on the last mission. The data handling, communications, radiation shielding, micrometeoroid protection, and orbit keeping systems were determined. The program costs were estimated and, excluding operational costs, the cost for each mission would average about $2 billion of which one-sixth would be for development, one-fourth for experiments, and the balance for vehicle acquisition.

    Beschreibung: Determination of the size, shape, mean density, and albedo of Ceres was made. Predictions for 133 occultations of bright stars occurring in 1986 and 1987 were completed and published, as have predictions of occultations of stars by Comet Halley. Twenty-nine mutual events involving Galilean satellites were observed at Flagstaff in 1985.

    Beschreibung: Analysis of the Mariner 9 radio-tracking data shows that the Martian gravity field is rougher than that of earth or the moon, and that the accepted direction of the Mars rotation axis is in error by about 0.5 deg. Contours of equivalent surface heights deduced from a sixth-degree solution for the Martian gravity field are presented. These contours represent the deviations from sphericity of a uniformly dense body with an external potential which is given by the first sixth-degree solution. In addition to Doppler observations, ranging or group-delay measurements have been made regularly since orbit insertion.

    Beschreibung: Observations at the 2.6 mm line of CO reveal the presence of a large number of molecular clouds at high galactic latitude. If the velocity dispersion of the clouds is a measure of their scale height, the mean distance of the ensemble detected is 100 pc. The clouds are unusual in that either they are not gravitationally bound or they are very deficient in CO relative to molecular hydrogen. These clouds represent a heretofore unrecognized component of the local interstellar medium. If they are pervasive in the Milky Way, they probably represent the small molecular cloud component of the interstellar medium.

    Beschreibung: A sensitivity analysis of the factors which affect a successful abort maneuver following a space shuttle launching is presented. Wind tunnel tests were conducted using optimum simulation techniques and data acquisition procedures. Static stability, dynamic stability, and local loads were investigated. It is concluded that parallel abort separation of the space shuttle components is possible at both high and low dynamic pressures. Successful separation is dependent upon configuration, Mach number, rocket exhaust impingement and relative position and attitude of the stages.

    Beschreibung: Although a few highly perturbed regions characterized by gas motions with velocities larger than 20 km/s have been discovered during the last several years in the supernova remnant (SNR) IC 443, the nature of these perturbed clumps and their relationship to the quiescent molecular gas near the SNR remains unknown. In part, this is due to a lack of large-scale, high angular resolution observations. Therefore, a systematic survey of this SNR in the CO (J=1 yields 0) line has been conducted, covering a roughly 50' x 50' region spaced by 2'. The observations were made with the 14 m telescope of the Five College Radio Astronomy Observatory (FCRAO), which has a resolution of 45" and a single sideband receiver temperature of 200 K at 2.6 mm wavelength. Five new clumps were discovered, bringing the total number of known perturbed regions to eight. To study the physical structure of these clumps in more detail, more complete maps of the clumps have been made in both the CO(J=1 yields 0) and (J=2 yields 1) transitions with the FCRAO telescope. These maps show that the extent of perturbed gas in a typical clump is several arcmin, or a few pc at a distance of 1.5 kpc.

    Beschreibung: Morphological evidence is presented (in the form of 3-A-bandpass Fabry-Perot images made with a CCD camera) that the two bright emission-line systems seen toward the galaxy NGC 1275 arise from a high-velocity impact of a foreground galaxy upon the accretion flow of gas cooling in the center of the Perseus cluster. The uniquely high optical-line luminosity of NGC 1275, in comparison with other central galaxies in clusters observed to have cooling flows, may be explained by energy deposited during the collision. Using additional information from 21-cm and extinction measurements, a rough model of the interaction is developed. Problems remain with this model - such as the likelihood of a gas-rich system penetrating to the cluster center. The kinematic structure of the optically emitting gas shows additional complex structure near the nucleus of NGC 1275.
