Notes: Photocurrent spectra of InxGa1−xAs/GaAs multiple quantum well structures grown by molecular beam epitaxy are studied in the presence of electric fields perpendicular to the heterointerface. Several Δn=0 allowed and Δn≠0 forbidden excitonic transitions are observed. Both negative and positive shifts of exciton transitions are found. Good agreement is found between the photocurrent observations and calculations using a multiband effective-mass approach, taking into account the strain-induced splitting.

Notes: Quantum well diodes with barriers formed by thin, short-period binary AlAs/GaAs superlattices were fabricated and found to have very high peak-to-valley current ratios. The effects of varying the AlAs and GaAs layers in the barriers are studied. The peak current density is found to decrease by orders of magnitude for monolayer increases in the AlAs layer thicknesses. Tunneling current peaks due to both resonance levels in the quantum well and resonance levels in the superlattice barriers are observed.

Notes: Electrical barrier height measurements on n+-GaAs–insulator–n-GaAs structures with short-period AlAs/GaAs superlattices forming the insulator show the effective conduction-band discontinuity (ΔEC) of a superlattice barrier (SLB) to be defined by the lowest superlattice energy state. Five structures with different AlAs and GaAs SLB layer thicknesses are investigated. A SLB with GaAs layers greater than 10 monolayers is found to have a ΔEC defined by Γ-valley states in the GaAs layers, while a SLB with GaAs and AlAs layers less than 10 monolayers and with thicker AlAs layers than GaAs layers is found to have a ΔEC defined by X-valley states in the AlAs layers. The SLB with GaAs and AlAs layers less than 10 monolayers and thicker GaAs layers than AlAs layers behaves as a random alloy. Negative differential resistance is observed in the current-voltage characteristic of the sample whose barrier height is defined by Γ-valley states in the GaAs layers.

Notes: We report the largest peak-to-valley current (PVC) ratios to date from AlGaAs/GaAs double barrier (either alloy barrier or superlattice barrier) diodes. PVC ratios as high as 3.6 and 21.7 were obtained from an AlAs/GaAs superlattice barrier structure at 300 and 77 K, respectively. In an alloy barrier structure with x=0.42 (x=0.3), PVC ratios of 3.9 (2.2) and 14.3 (7.0) were observed at 300 and 77 K, respectively. We attribute these excellent results to a "two-step'' spacer layer incorporated in the devices studied which facilitated the growth of high material quality.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract A granitic batholith in the Tso Morari Culmination of the most internal High Himalayan thrust sheets (Ladakh Himalaya, India) has been investigated by Rb/Sr isotopic methods as well as by typological studies on its zircon population (Pupin 1980). The good alignment and spread of the single muscovite and the 6 whole rock data points allow the tracing of a fairly good isochron of 460±8 Ma which may be considered as the granite's crystallisation age. Its Sr initial ratio (I.R.) of 0.7365±2 is very high even in respect to other anatectic granites of this suite known in the Himalayas and in continental blocks to the north. In terms of the lower Cambrian to middle Ordovician ages known for this granitic suite, the Nyimaling Granite is among the youngest. The zircon population perfectly confirms isotope data interpretation and field observations inasmuch as it is characteristic for aluminous, intrusive granites of crustal origin (cf. high Sr I.R.); moreover, the batholith is intrusive into Lower Cambrian metasediments affected by a marked contact metamorphism and a regional overprint of greenschist facies. Its crustal level is thus very high.

Notes: Summary We retrieved a 1.6 kbp intron separating two exons of the psb C gene which codes for the 44 kDa reaction center protein of photosystem II. This intron is 3 to 4 times the size of all previously sequenced Euglena gracilis chloroplast introns. It contains an open reading frame of 458 codons potentially coding for a basic protein of 54 kDa of yet unknown function. The intron boundaries follow consensus sequences established for chloroplast introns related to class II and nuclear pre-mRNA introns. Its 3′-terminal segment has structural features similar to class II mitochondrial introns with an invariant base A as possible branch point for lariat formation.

Notes: Summary We have completed the analysis of a DNA segment of the chloroplast genome of Euglena gracilis Klebs, Z-strain, which links the 3′ end of the extra 16S rRNA gene with the 5′ end of the 16S rRNA gene of the rrn operon A. This region is a mosaic of several structural elements and contains an intact rrn interoperon spacer of 1,080 bp, an extra 5S rRNA gene, an open reading frame for 406 codons (ORF 406) which is flanked by short inverted repeats and a short direct repeat originating from the rrn interoperon spacer. It seems that a once complete rrn operon underwent in the past an insertion/deletion event leaving intact the 16S and 5S rRNA but totally excising the 16S-23S intergenic spacer and the 23S rRNA gene. Instead a protein coding gene of yet unknown function was inserted along with other structural elements.

Notes: Abstract Allozyme profiles of eastern weevils (Beltsville, Maryland; Washington Co., Illinois), western weevils (Logan and St. George, Utah), and Egyptian weevils (Yuma, Arizona; Westmorland, California) were compiled by acrylamide gel electrophoresis. Twenty-two gene loci from 12 enzymes (ACPH, ADH, AMY, AO, EST, GOT, G-6PDH, MDH, ME, SOD, TYR, XDH) were analyzed. Mean heterozygosity of these populations was 0.231, with an average proportion of polymorphic loci of 0.536. The mean genetic distance of all weevil populations was 0.033 and the fixation index was 0.024. Diagnostic loci were found which could distinguish western weevils from eastern and Egyptian weevils. The small genetic distance between the eastern and Egyptian weevils suggests that they may be the same strain and are certainly different from the western weevil strain. Based on this and other evidence, we conclude that all weevil strains in the United States are Hypera postica (Gyllenhal), and that the use of H. brunneipennis (Boheman) for the Egyptian alfalfa weevil of North America should be discontinued.
