Description: Off-shore of southern Europe is one of the most seismically active regions on the Earth. However, this region is mainly monitored using land seismic networks, leaving a large observational gap in the Mediterranean Sea and NE Atlantic. As a first step towards filling this gap, NERIES BBOBS Group (IPGP, INGV, AWI) has deployed three broadband ocean bottom seismometers (OBS) for three years, where the OBS are recovered and redeployed every year. One OBS was deployed in the Ligurian Sea (40° N, 6.5° E), between Balearic Islands and Sardinia, three in the Ionian Sea (36° N, 18° E), between Italy and Greece, and six near Azores at MOMAR site (2[U+F0B0] W 37[U+F0B0] N). The first year of deployment and recovery completed in August 2008 and the BBOBS have been deployed for the second year. The 2007 year has been an year of several great earthquakes (Sumatra, Kuril Island, China), which were recorded by these OBS. Our OBS also recorded hundreds of local earthquakes of magnitude 〉2.5 along with regional earthquakes that were not identified by land network. At the end of each year of recovery, the data will be freely available to scientific community through ORFEUS, which is a great opportunity for seismologists to use these data for region and global studies.

Description: The records of an aftershock (M ~ 4) of a moderate size event (M = 5.9) which occurred along the subduction zone of Guerrero (Mexico), are used as empirical Green functions (EGF) to determine the source characteristics of the mainshock and of its smaller size (M = 5.5) foreshock. The data consist of accelerograms recorded by the Guerrero Accelerograph Array, a high dynamic range strong motion array. The three events appear to be located close to each other at distances much smaller than the source to receiver distances. The fault mechanism of the mainshock is computed by non-linear inversion of P polarity readings and S wave polarizations determined at two near source stations. The foreshock and aftershock fault mechanisms are similar to that of the mainshock as inferred from long period data and shear wave polarization analysis. The maximum likelihood solution is well constrained, indicating a typical shallow dipping thrust fault mechanism, with the P-axis approximately oriented in a SSW direction. The source time functions (STFs) of the mainshock and foreshock events are determined using a new method of deconvolution of the EGF records at three strong motion sites. In this method the STF of the large event is approximated by a superposition of pseudo triangular pulses whose parameters are determined by a non-linear inversion in frequency domain. The source time function of the mainshock shows the presence of two separate pulses, which can be related to multiple rupture episodes. The relative location of mainshock sub-events is done by using plots of isochrones computed from measurementes of the time delay between pulses on the STF records at each station. The first sub-event is located no more than 2.5-3 km away from the other along the fault strike. The STF retrieved from foreshock records shows single pulse waveforms. The computed STFs are used to estimate seismic moments, source radii and stress release of the events assuming a circular fault model and constant rupture velocity. The final rupture model for the mainshock indicates the successive breaking of two nearby large slip patches having sizes of the order of a few kilometers and with the rupture propagating at an average speed close to the shear wave velocity.

Notes: Abstract The low frequency spatio-temporal intraseasonal evolution of monsoon rainfall over India is studied by considering the pentad rainfall averages taken over 2.5° wide and 5.0° long blocks lying across the central longitudinal and latitudinal transacts. The time-latitude cross sections show south to north progressions of rainfall anomalies with a recurrence period of about 40 days. The progressions show considerable inter-annual and intra-seasonal variation in frequency, amplitude and rate of progression. The extended empirical orthogonal function analysis shows that the first two most important functions correspond to this northward progression of rain anomalies recurring after an interval of about 40 days. The rate of progression of anomalies is about 0.5° Lat./day. The time-longitude cross sections show the movement of rainfall anomalies towards both directions east and the west, with slight preference towards the east. The importance of these signals in rainfall forecasting is foreseen.

Notes: Summary We studied mice from five strains (BALB/c, C3H/HeSnJ, C57BL/6J, Csb and 129/ReJ) at two ages (young, 10±1 weeks; and old, 67±3 weeks) for the induction of sister chromatid exchanges (SCEs) in vivo by methyl nitrosourea (MNU). The SCE frequency is genotype-specific. The F1 phenotype resembles the ‘low’ responding parent. SCE induction is significantly lower in the older animals of each strain than their younger counterparts, and the reduction of SCE/cell with old age is strain-specific. A general explanation for these results must include strain differences in relative mutagenic sensitivity, genotype-specific pattern of reduction in DNA repair and other such factors affecting SCE formation, with old age.

Notes: Summary An analysis of the role of the nonpair forces in the lattice dynamics of s.p. bonded h.c.p. metalsviz. Mg and Zn has been presented. The total energy has been extended up to third order in the electron-ion pseudopotential. The dynamical matrix contains the terms arising from central pairwise interactions between the ions as well as contributions due to sums of nonpair three-body forces. Such forces, arising from the inclusion of third-order terms, are of short-range nature and possess the character of tensor forces. It is concluded that the nonpair three-body interaction is necessary for explaining the lattice dynamics of h.c.p. metals. The theoretical dispersion curves are compared with the experimental data. Good agreement is found between the computed and experimental results along the symmetry directions.
