Description: We present the results of ULF magnetic field observation at Karimshino station (Kamchatka, Russia). Using a case study we discovered an effect of suppression of ULF intensity about 2-6 days before rather strong and isolated seismic shocks (magnitude M = 4.6-6.6). It is revealed for nighttime and the horizontal component of ULF field (G) in the frequency range 0.01-0.1 Hz. Then we prove the reliability of the effect by computed correlation between G (or 1/G) and especially calculated seismic indexes Ks for the rather long period of observation from June 2000 to November 2001. Our recent data confirm the validity of the effect. We show here a similar result during a period of frequent strong seismic activity in April-May 2002. It is highly probable that the effect observed is connected with the increase in plasma density perturbations inside the ionosphere, which are induced by preseismic water and gas release at the ground surface and following energy transportation into the ionosphere by atmospheric gravity waves. Two models are discussed and computed: the first is a decrease of penetration coefficient of Alfven waves from the magnetosphere due to a turbulent increase in effective Pedersen conductivity in the ionosphere, and the second is a change in wave number (k) distribution of source ionospheric turbulence. One of the mechanisms or both could be responsible for the observed 2-3 times suppression of ULF magnetic field noise at the ground.

Description: We consider a depression in intensity of ULF magnetic pulsations, which is observed on the ground surface due to appearance of the irregularities in the ionosphere. It is supposed that oblique Alfven waves in the ULF frequency range are downgoing from the magnetosphere and the horizontal irregularities of ionospheric conductivity are created by upgoing atmospheric gravity waves from seismic source. Unlike the companion paper by Molchanov et al. (2003), we used a simple model of the ionospheric layer but took into consideration the lateral inhomogeneity of the perturbation region in the ionosphere. It is shown that ULF intensity could be essentially decreased for frequencies f = 0.001-0.1 Hz at nighttime but the change is negligible at daytime in coincidence with observational results.

Description: The results of ULF electromagnetic signal observations in seismoactive regions prior to earthquakes are presented and discussed. The new differential measurement technique developed in SPbF IZMIRAN for location of the ULF emission sources of space and lithosphere origin is described. The MVC-2DS geophysical instrumentation is introduced as a promising tool for registration of ULF signals related to earthquakes (both seismic and electromagnetic ones). Methods are proposed for ULF data processing to investigate the preparation processes in the earthquake source regions and to distinguish seismogenic signals on the background of space pulsations. Some examples of application of those methods for study of the earthquake precursory signatures are presented. Perspectives of seismo-electromagnetic tomography experiments in seismoactive regions, using MVC-2DS technique, are discussed in relation to the development of earthquake prediction methods.

Description: Low Frequency (LF) radio signals lie in the band 30-300 kHz. Monitoring equipment able to measure the electric strength of such signals, at field sites with very low noise levels, were designed and assembled in Italy. From 1993 onwards, the electric field strength of the MCO (216 kHz, France) broadcasting station has been measured at two sites in Central Italy. At the end of 1996, radio signals from the CLT (189 kHz, Italy) and the CZE (270 kHz, Czech Republic) broadcasting stations were included in the measurements. During this monitoring period, evident attenuation of the electric field strength in some of the radio signals was observed at some of the receivers. The duration of the attenuation observed was several days and so it could have been related to particular meteorological conditions. On the other hand, this phenomenon could also represent precursors of moderate (3.0 =M =3.5) earthquakes that occurred near the receivers (within 50 km) along the transmitter-receiver path. In this case it is possible that some local troposphere defocusing of the radio signals, produced by the pre-seismic processes, might have occurred. These observations were related only to moderate earthquakes and in these cases it may be that suitable meteorological conditions are needed to observe the effect. During February-March 1998 at one measuring site, we observed a significant increase in the CZE electric field strength. Unfortunately, the data of the other receiver could not be used in this case because of frequent interruptions in the recordings. The increase might have been a precursor of a strong earthquake (M = 5.3) that occurred on March 26, 1998 in the Umbria-Marche zone at a location over 100 km from the receiver, but which lay along the transmitter-receiver path. In this case, it is possible that an ionospheric disturbance, produced by the pre-seismic processes, might have occurred. If this pre-seismic behaviour of the LF signals could be confirmed then this type of precursor would seem capable of giving information on the direction, and perhaps even the rough location, of a forthcoming earthquake.

Notes: The near-field measurement of fully turbulent jets discharged from a straight circular pipe indicates the presence of quasiperiodic velocity perturbations. The Strouhal number based on the predominant frequency falls in the range of the preferred mode for the jet with a potential core and has an asymptotic value of 0.38 in the high Reynolds number regime. Regular perturbations are not observed in the mixing region immediately downstream from the pipe exit.

Notes: To advance new soft magnetic materials of an FeGaSi alloy into the commercial world, improvements on various properties were designed by introducing additive elements without sacrificing its high saturation magnetic induction. The detailed studies on the diversified properties, such as saturation magnetic induction, film internal stress, wear resistivity, and so on, were performed. High-frequency permeability of the laminated structure film was also investigated. As a result, the Ru-added FeRuGaSi alloy films, whose typical compositions are Fe72Ru4Ga7Si17 and Fe68Ru8Ga7Si17 (at. %), prove to be excellent soft magnetic materials especially appropriate for the magnetic recording/playback head core use.

Notes: The high-frequency permeability of amorphous Co-Ta-Zr films was studied and the frequency dependence was described in terms of the eddy-current-loss formula. For the double-layered structure intervened with SiO2 film, the degradation of the permeability became apparent with the decrease of SiO2 thickness.

Notes: Extensive study was made on Fe-base crystalline alloys in search for new soft magnetic materials with high saturation magnetization by means of sputtering technique. It revealed that newly found FeGaSi and FeAlGe alloy systems possessed excellent soft magnetic properties with remarkably higher saturation magnetization. These new alloy films, annealed in vacuum at 500 °C for 1 h, show the magnetic properties of Bs=13 and 15 kG, Hc=0.09 and 0.20 Oe, and μ1 MHz=2000 and 1800 for the FeGaSi and FeAlGe alloy films of 2 μm in thickness, respectively. These values are superior to those of FeAlSi (sendust) alloy which is a typical soft magnetic material with high saturation magnetization. Results of the Co-added systems of FeCoGaSi and FeCoAlGe alloys are also presented. Discussions are given on various systems of Fe base crystalline alloy films studied, which are classified into four types of groups with respect to magnetic softness.

Notes: Magnetic and other properties of Co-base amorphous alloy films prepared by sputtering are investigated. A detailed magnetic phase diagram with saturation magnetic flux density, crystallization temperature, and zero-magnetostrictive line on Co-Ta-Zr amorphous alloys were obtained, and the technical knowhow to make a film with well-reproducible characteristics by widely changing the sputtering conditions was related with these physical properties. Especially on alloy sputtering, a phenomenological model for elucidating a composition difference between film and target is presented. After these studies, the film characteristics of Bs=12 kG, Tx=450 °C, ||λs||〈10−8, Hc〈10 mOe, and permeabilities of μ(1 MHz)=7000, μ(100 MHz)=2000 for the single film of 2 μm in thickness and of μ(1 MHz)=4000, μ(100 MHz)=800 for the insulator-sandwiched multilayered film of 10 μm are obtained, and these well-balanced values enable us to apply the materials for high-frequency recording head.

Notes: An attempt to obtain soft magnetic materials with high saturation magnetic flux density and thermal stability has been carried out with respect to a multilayered type of films containing Fe-N prepared by two-source magnetron rf sputtering. The addition of small amounts of elements such as Al is effective in improving soft magnetic properties of Fe-N films. Multilayered films of Fe-Al-N intervened by thin Si-N layers showed softer magnetic properties than the Fe-Al-N single layer films and also showed high thermal stability. Typically, Fe-Al-N (500 A(ring))/Si-N (12 A(ring)) multilayered films exhibited a saturation magnetic flux density of 20 kG, a coercivity Hc of 0.3 Oe, and a permeability μ of 1900 at 5 MHz after annealing at 550 °C for 1 h.
