    Description: A reverse protocol for measurements of molecular binding and reactivity by excited-state quenching has been developed in which the quencher, held at a fixed concentration, is titrated by a photoexcitable probe molecule whose decay is monitored. The binding stoichiometries, affinities, and reactivities of the electron-transfer complexes between cytochrome c (Cc) and cytochrome c peroxidase (CcP) were determined over a wide range of ionic strengths (4.5 to 118 millimolar) by the study of photoinduced electron-transfer quenching of the triplet excited state of zinc-substituted Cc (ZnCc) by Fe3+CcP. The 2:1 stoichiometry seen for the binding of Cc to CcP at low ionic strength persists at the physiologically relevant ionic strengths and likely has functional significance.     Description: RNA polymerase I and II transcription factors SL1 and TFIID, respectively, are composed of the TATA-binding protein (TBP) and a set of TBP-associated factors (TAFs) responsible for promoter recognition. How the universal transcription factor TBP becomes committed to a TFIID or SL1 complex has not been known. Complementary DNAs encoding each of the three TAFIs that are integral components of SL1 have not been isolated. Analysis of subunit interactions indicated that the three TAFIs can bind individually and specifically to TBP. In addition, these TAFIs interact with each other to form a stable TBP-TAF complex. When TBP was bound first by either TAFI110, 63, or 48, subunits of TFIID such as TAFII250 and 150 did not bind TBP. Conversely, if TBP first formed a complex with TAFII250 or 150, the subunits of SL1 did not bind TBP.     Notes: The influence of Si, Co, and Dy2O3 on magnetic properties of sintered 40Cedidymium–Fe–B magnets was investigated and related to the microstructure through transmission electron microscopy (TEM) investigations. It is found that the decrease in iHc and Tc caused by the presence of Ce in the 40Cedidymium could partly be compensated by additives. Sintered magnets with iHc = 9.2 kOe and (BH)max=28.2 MG Oe were successfully achieved. TEM investigations show an intragranular amorphous phase within the R2Fe14B (R=Nd, Pr, or Ce) grains and three new intergranular phases at grain boundaries and junctions of the R2Fe14B grains. It is suggested that the deterioration in the magnetic hardening is closely related to these new phases as well as the low magnetic anisotropy field of the Ce2Fe14B compound. The intragranular phase is likely to act as nucleation positions for reverse magnetic domains.

    Notes: A theory as the basis for solving nonlinear boundary value problems is described. A new analysis is presented for nonlinear reflection, which reveals that there is a two-dimensional spatial increase of the second-harmonic wave. The accretion along the propagation direction is the result of the self-interaction of the primary wave; the one in the wave front is due to the boundary restriction.

    Notes: Bilayers Fe/Au-Cu and Fe/Ag-Au made by vacuum evaporation were studied. The magneto-optical polar Kerr rotation and reflectivity spectra were measured in the region from 400 to 700 nm. In the magneto-optical Kerr rotation spectra of bilayers Fe/Au-Cu and Fe/Ag-Au with the thickness of Fe layer less than the light penetration depth, there is a broad enhancement of the magneto-optical polar Kerr rotation with a Kerr peak near the plasma edge in the reflectivity spectra of Au-Cu and Ag-Au alloys. The peak shifts toward the long wavelength side with increasing Cu and Au content in Au-Cu and Ag-Au alloys, respectively. Our results show that the composition of the reflector in our bilayer structures can shift the wavelength range of the magneto-optical Kerr rotation enhancement. Interpretation and discussions are given.

    Notes: In this paper the magneto-optical polar Kerr rotation spectra of trilayers Fe/Ag/Cu, Fe/Cu/Ag, Fe/Au/Cu, and Fe/Cu/Au were measured and calculated. The experimental results coincided well with the calculated results. It was found that for trilayers Fe/Cu/Ag and Fe/Ag/Cu, with a 100 A(ring) thickness of the top Fe layer, there were two Kerr rotation peaks in their rotational magneto-optical Kerr rotation spectra, located near 320 nm (the plasma edge of Ag) and 560 nm (the absorption edge of Cu). For Fe/Cu/Au and Fe/Au/Cu, with a 100 A(ring) thickness of the top Fe layer, there was only one Kerr rotation peak, which shifts slightly with the intermediate layer thickness. Trilayers Fe/Au/Cu and Fe/Cu/Au with suitable thickness of the top Fe layer are useful at present for magneto-optical storage with a read-out laser of long wavelength; Fe/Ag/Au and Fe/Cu/Ag will be useful in the future for magneto-optical storage with read-out laser of short wavelength.
